I find it very interesting, all of the old stories about them. So many people define God as a single, omnipotent, omniscient being when I find it much more natural to think of them as beings far surpassing our own ability and power, but not "able to do anything" as so many folks claim about their god.
In these stories, it seems rather rare for there to be a complete lack of opposition, either in principle or action from other deities when cruelty is involved. There's nearly always a dissenting party, or a sort of "referee" type to disallow things from going too far.
