I'd like to add onto my last post that it is watchable once you get past the party scene. Its only like an hour and 20 something minutes, so once you're past the failed character development you can be amused for the next 45 minutes to an hour and it ends before you get too frustrated that you never see anything. It had a lot of potential. it just wasn't that good.

Clarification: Cloverfield was the name of the exit from the highway into Santa Monica where the Bad Robot production office is located. The film project began with Cloverfield as it's codename and then for some reason everyone decided fuck it with actually given the movie a title and/or naming the actual monster.

As a major Godzilla fan, I can agree.
The new Godzilla movie was so fucking busy not presenting Godzilla to the audience, even when the fucker was on screen. The key to a good Godzilla movie is that because Godzilla isn't on screen a lot, you make it count. Having him pop up then cutting away every single time he's about to do anything completely undermines the idea. At least in Cloverfield not only did every scene with the monster count, it felt relevant to the lives of the protagonists.
If anything,Cloverfield was a superior Godzilla movie than 2014 Godzilla.
