>For months, American moviegoers have either been going big or staying home.
>And if they keep behaving that way, 2015 may set new marks for both hits and misses — while leaving a hole in the middle, where Oscars are typically born.
>But in both months, high-profile, midrange films that were being closely monitored as awards prospects flopped — among them Sony’s “The Walk,” Universal’s “Steve Jobs” and Warner’s “Our Brand Is Crisis.” And those joined more commercially oriented wipeouts like “Pan,” “Rock the Kasbah,” “The Last Witch Hunter,” “Jem and the Holograms” and “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.”
>Over all, North American ticket sales so far this year are up 5 percent compared with the same period in 2014, according to the Rentrak reporting service. But the increase does not reflect what has traditionally been considered a healthy movie marketplace — more hits than misses, with films of different sizes and aimed at different slices of the population, chugging toward profit.
>Instead, the boost comes almost entirely from a handful of megamovies: “Jurassic World,” “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Inside Out,” “Furious 7” and those fall hits, “The Martian” and “Hotel Transylvania 2.”

All we need to do is kill capeshit and sequels and Hollywood will be finished.

Something else will just replace capeshit.

Wow, it's almost like this is a natural result of neoliberal economy in all aspects of human existence.

Hollywood is as good as dead. The 2010s are a really, really shitty decade for movies because the movers and shakers in the industry are people who grew up edgy in the 90s and 2000s.

There simply aren't any good movies made anymore. It's all total shit. Sometimes pretentious shit, sometimes hilarious shit, sometimes capeshit, but always shit.

We have the end of 2015 already and in the whole decade, there was not a single movie that had an impact on zeitgeist and pop culture. Hilarious! If you had to do a movie like those "XY movies" in the 2000s today, it would be impossible - no 2010s movie stuck in your head like those movies did, not even super-hyped shit like 50 Shades of Gay.

It will bomb. Screencap if you want.

Hollywood's problem is that it now makes movies the director finds cool instead of movies that the audience finds cool.

Ex Machina, Diary of a Teenaged Girl, Madding Crowd, the Martian and Kingsman were all released this year. only the latter two were hits, but I'll take that over the crop of 2014 where the only good movie I can remember was Whiplash.
>>
Wait what about Straight Outta Compton? I thought that was a hit
>>
>>62634677
>Hollywood's problem is that it now makes movies the director finds cool instead of movies that the audience finds cool.

Except it's the exact opposite. Everything is test marketed to hell and back so there's no room for anything remotely unique or interesting. Creative control is at all time low and groups of ten teenaged retards sitting in front of two-way glass are making most of the decisions.

Jessica Lange was so fucking hot in King Kong

Literally the only ones still making decent "non-blockbuster" "non-hipster shit" movies are the Coens.
>>
>>62632409
She's beautiful inside and out.
>>
I like how the article ignores how every flop this year had over an 9 on imdb, over 90 on metacritic, and 100% on RT... right up until the second they premiered.

It's almost as if people are learning to not trust marketing and are only going by word of mouth from people they know.

>>
>>62634828
lol, then why does everything bomb? Unless they test-.show their shit to their most loyal tumblr followers, ending up in a huge circle jerk.

I mean, shit, Spectre, dat Austin Powers ending. Do you honestly think nobody objected to it? Bullshit.
>>
>>62634755
>only the latter two were hits
Yeah, 2010s hits. They were shit, just less shit than the rest.

The 2010s will go down in history as the lost decade of cinema, mark my words.
>>
>>62637125
But they are, have been for some years now.

People thought indie games would save vidya, but no chance.
>>
>>62634828
No, those are the ones that succeed. The flops are the "LOL ART" movies directors make to wank themselves off .The argument just boils down to the intention behind the creation. If you want directors making movies they like and want to make at the risk of isolating everyone else or do you want them making movies everyone wants to see by slightly changing the tried and true? Obviously there is a middle ground but it seams that's being satiated on TV nowadays.
>>
>>62637428
Sure, typically. But the reason the OP article exists at all is because a number of the heavily tested high budget/profile shitfests bombed or underperformed.
>>
>>62637206
They probably had ten or fifteen different generic as fuck endings written and the "austin powers" ending was the only one that got a response.
>>
>2015
>going to the cinema

for what reason?
Only retards that watch pleb tier garbage like avengers enjoy sharing a movie experience with a room full of loud obnoxious people constantly chewing food and looking at their bright cellphone screens.
Smart people watch good movies at home.
>>
>>62632409

The problem is they have made movies cost so much you don't want to take risk to go see a movie if you don't feel strongly about your chances of liking it.

No one wants to go to a movie, have it suck, leave early and maybe even argue to get the ticket price back (the food cost just as much so no refund there). Just not worth it sometimes.
>>
>>62632720

Is she overrated? A Little. But she definitely deserves some oscars and noms she got.

Meryl Streep has won several times, and I think she's been pretty graceful since because she knows they want to give it to other people. Helen Mirren may be less secure about it.
