I feel like franchises that are helmed by directors with at least some semblance of ability or vision do better. Consider the big franchises going around today.
MCU was launched by Jon Favreau, who may not be the best director but certainly makes movies that have his touch. The next film Incredible Hulk from the unbelievably generic Louis Letterier and no one cares about that movie. Iron Man 2 has to get people to even care about Marvel again.
The first of The Hunger Games films had Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, wiriter of Big) directing. Ross is a guy who definitely has the ability to make good movies and he got Steven fucking Soderbergh to do second unit stuff when he was busy. Since then they put studio yes man Francis Lawrence on it but it doesn't matter because they already got audiences hooked with a first film that felt more like a movie than a product. Consider how films like The Maze Runner, The Mortal Instruments, or The Host tried to tap into the same audience but didn't have as much success. It might be because the studios just stuck pushovers in the directors chairs and they ended up not really making films so much as products.
Even Transformers are undeniably like anything else. They're not good but those are unquestionably Michael Bay films and you're not going to see anything else like it. Does anyone really think Transformers would have lasted this long and been this successful in the hands of Rupert Sanders?
Maybe I'm overanalyzing things but it seems to me giving at least the first film in a franchise to a director known for making "their" movies is a good idea.
