Japanese movies are awful because Japanese people overact.
It's like they are crudely trying to mimic human emotion but overdo it by a long shot.

You have to hand him BR since Fukasaku Sr. is pretty based and it's not the film's fault that hollywood decided films about killing teenagers were all the rage.

Are there any good 80s jap action movies?
>>55081054
There are some modern Korean movies that are better than their Japanese counterparts. The production quality is usually higher. But the Japanese Golden Age of Mizoguchi, Ozu, Kobayashi, Teshigahara and Kurosawa among others is beyond compare.
>>55081054
They're good too, but my favorite asian director has to be Wong Kar-wai
>>55081054
Yes, but for how long?
Koreans are desperate for attention. I wouldn't be surprised if they kill their recent popularity by overusing the drama/revenge genre to stay relevant. Hong Kong style.
>>55081138
I prefer japanese dramas, they're still overacting and they're plague by idols/ham actors like the koreans, but there is always a few decents dramas every year.
Koreans seem to turn everything into soap operas shit
>>55080247
My nigger.
Departures is great. Seriously worth a watch.
>>55081446

They've already been milking it for like 15 years now, doesn't really get old though because they're the best at it. Some of the best gangster films ever are Korean
>>55081140
This dude gives Jackie Chan a run for his money in Roaring Fire.
Pretty good drama if you're intowincest
Pretty good slice-of-life social/commentary from high school. Unique storytelling from several points of view. At first glance it might seem like generic dorama but I promise you it's everything but that.
Are there nude scenes from Japanese movies that are not JVA?
Pretty good drama with one seriously fucked up family. Violent sex addict dad, one handed divorced mom, girlfriendgetting raped by dad, son lusting for new mom and generally being afraid ofbeing like his dad.
It's hard to describe but it has really nicecomfyatmosphere, great direction, set in 80s I belive.
Pretty good stylish thriller with lots of violence. From the dude who made Confessions. Amazing lead, over-the-top Miike-like stylized brutality, high production values. It's about harboiled cunt ex-cop dad looking for his missing daughter and uncovering her fucked up mysteries.
Pretty good slasher/drama/comedy. Social commentary etc. Something what Sion Sono might've done. Young chick voyeuristically observes old lonely people a goes berserk if they by any chance stop being lonely.
>>55081054
No.
They made some pretty good thrillers in the early-mid 00s and that's it.
>>55078308
椎名もも [IMBD-032] is a pretty good one, but i must warn you - it's only for patricians.
Pretty good heavy drama about very strange relationship of one unhappy couple that gets involved in investigation of murder of neighbor's kid. One journalists investigates and slowly uncovers that things might not be what they seem and that there's something strange with the couple. Great story, great atmosphere. Might be a little slow for some plebs here but so are most of japanese dramas. This one is definitely worth the watch.
Based Sono
Pretty good crime/drama/with some hints of clever romcom. Told non-lineary from different points of view. You know some shit happens and it somehow clicks together at the end. It's nothing heavy but exceptionally charming and I guarantee you'll enjoy it.
https://mubi.com/lists/kenjis-japanese-canon
Hana-Bi
Pretty good mystery thriller with some social commentary. Well-written, well acted and 10/10 direction and atmosphere. Feels kinda like Hitchcock. It's about couple of parents and their kids staying together in lakeside cottage as form of training camp so the kids can get into some classy highschool. Then the main hero, one of the dads gets into unenviable situation when he stumbles upon dead body or whatnot and he has to figure what do.
>>55078618
>>55083176
Holy shit. I might give these a look myself.
Pretty good mystery. Well actually THE mystery. Mysteries don't really get any better than this. Dispute about inheritance of wealthy family goes all kinds of wrong when strange will of late head of the family is uncovered. Directed by Kon Ichikawa, based on insanely popular series of mystery novels.
>>55083455
This looks great. I wiki'd it and saw it's based on a Keigo Higashino book. While not a movie there's a great 11 episode drama called Thursday Theatre Keigo Higashino Mystery. Each episode is a standalone story and while some episodes are better than others there's a few in there that are excellent. Episodes 7, 8 and 10 in particular.
Pretty good horror. Well actually the best japanese horror ever made. Made by influential japanese horror director Nobuo Nakagawa. Horror genre might have a bad rep but this one is work of art
>>55081425
>Korean or Japanese?
>Wong Kar Wai
Who, by the way, is chinese but that's a minor detail, I guess.
>>55081054
They make very good cop dramas and their average film is a lot more approachable given their sensibilities are very western in comparison. But Japan has one of the best renowned directors/quality films-to-shit in the world. Take >>55081054 for instance. Ask anyone about jap cinema and you'll get one or two of those names. Ask anyone to name you Korean films from before Oldboy and not many people will be able to give you just one.
>>55078379
>>55078441
I like to watch only the first hour of that movie because at exacly the middle point it just becomes shit when they introduce that Highlander stuff.
>>55083996
Thanks, I'll check it out. I was actually meaning to check more of his stuff like Suspect X.
Pretty good thriller/action with hints of satire where high school chemistry teacher decides to built his own nuclear bomb. Why? Because he can, that's why. He eventually demands that baseball matches are uninterrupted on TV and broadcasted whole and other silly stuff. It's pretty strange movie. Kinda like Taxi Driver but not really. Actually it's written by the brother of the dude who did write the script for Taxi Driver. Catchy as fuck soundtrack. This EVA song is originally from this movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYY6ne9OMGA
>>55084104
I know he's chinese dude, i said asian, since when are chinese not asian? we were already talking about japs and koreans i just tried to bring another asian country to the thread anon
Still walking by hirokazu koreeda.
I cried. Holy shit that movie is perfect.
Pretty good sci-fi/horror by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. While Tokyo Sonata, Kairo or Cure are fairly popular here, this one goes unnoticed. It actually is quite similar to Kairo in terms of atmosphere and overall feel. Woman tries to kill herself and falls into coma, her partner has no idea why so he visits her in her mind with the help of some sci-fi neurosurgical procedure. It's psychological drama/romance with horror atmosphere.
>>55080878
Sono is the most interesting director to come out of Japan since Miike.
>>55085278
Maybe it's just me but i kinda feel like Sono is a wackier version of Tarantino and i don't mean that in a positive way. I've seen Suicide Club, Cold Fish and Why don't you play in Hell. I must say i enjoyed them somewhat but nothing too stellar. Maybe i'm missing something since he gets so much praise in these jap threads.
>>55085424
His movies aren't all home runs (IMO Love Exposure didn't need to be 4 hours long) but he has a very unique style, unlike many of his contemporaries.
>>55085278
tokyo tribe is even sillier. not as good but quite enjoyable
And I'll end my reccomendations with this one. It's Shinji Aoyama's magnum opus. Slow and long as fuck. Shot in sepia tone. Bus driver (one and only Kôji Yakusho) and two middleschoolers are the only one's who survive bus jacking. They can't cope with it and eventually go on road trip together to start over again. It's fucking brilliant, but it's not for everyone.

There's plenty of nudity in this. (and most Japanese movies) While I wasn't a huge fan of this movie in particular Takashi Ishii's other stuff is pretty noteworthy.
