Who here is planning on watching the premier of the new TV Series '12 Monkeys' on Syfy tonight?

The movie is one of my all time favorites so naturally I'll have to watch the tv series. I hope it lives up to series like 'Bates Motel' which I absolutely love.
>>
>>52545614
Oh and it comes on at 9 p.m. tonight eastern time.
>>
>>52545614
>Series '12 Monkeys'
really? is gilliam involved?
>>
Judging by the commercials I've seen, it looks like they're really deviating from the Gilliam movie. Still gonna check it out,
>>
>>52545667
I'm not sure.
>>
I heard really good things about this show on a TV podcast
>>
>>52545667
Nope.
It's a full Syfy original series attempting to rape a pre-existing IP.
Just like they did with that series loosely based on Legion.
>>
Why don't we all watch it together, and discuss it as we are watching it in this thread.
>>
well they just jumped right in didn't they
>>
And we're on.
>>
I'm guessing this is gonna be the WW1 bullet?
>>
should be a working stream if anyone wants one vaughnlive.tv/pimpbot5000
>>
I'm liking it thus far, especially that bit with the watch.
>>
Is this a mini series or is this going to be like an actual show with seasons and all like Hannibal and Bates Motel do with their respective movie inspirations.
>>
>>52545614

Surprisingly well-done for a SyFy thing - I'm in.
>>
>>52547444
It's surprisingly good.

I'm going to check out the series tonight.

The guy who plays Cole, what else is he in? Looks familiar.
>>
>>52548438

I was skeptical myself, but it's good. Do not go in expecting the same thing as movie. It's taking the characters and lore from the movie, but telling its own story.
>>
>>52548389
wut? how?
>>
Oh man I'm loving this, I didn't expect it to be this good, damnit I want to see the next episode now!
>>
>52548389

>>
>>52548507
Then why not make their own new IP instead of bandwagoning off an established name?
>>
>>52548516
>>52548541

At midnight you can stream from the SyFy web site.
>>
>>52548053
>they travel into the past
>they can't go back because the timeline has changed
>>
>>52548583

Because 12 Monkeys is a known commodity that people already know and love. Built-in audience. Not going to lie, if this was called something else I wouldn't have even though twice about it. SyFy isn't exactly known for great programming. Although, it looks like they're trying to change that.
>>
>>52545614
For those of who missed the first episode it comes back on again at 11 p.m. eastern time on Syfy.
>>
One of Syfy's most popular program's is WWE Friday Night Smackdown

this was a Jeopardy clue today
>>
>>52548681
>SyFy isn't exactly known for great programming.

They've, thankfully, been changing that, with shows like Helix and Ascension -- hell, even Z Nation is entertaining.

I'm glad they've gotten beyond showing Stargate and BG all fucking day.
>>
>>52548593
Only on the website? Is it a one time thing online and then it plays again next Friday or what?
>>
>>52548738
Smackdown is, actually, Syfy's highest-rated show in its history.
>>
>>52548738
>WWE Friday Night Smackdown

Thats not even science fiction... that's sad.
>>
>>52548593
i don't see anything about it on the website
>>
>>52548764

It'll play at it's regular time next week as well.

>>52548862

I don't know. They mentioned it immediately following the show. Said at midnight the second episode will be available for a limited time.
>>
>>52548922
Isnt that a stupid idea as far as getting people to tune in next week?
>>
>>52548438
And this series doesn't hurt or affect the movie in any way. It's like fargo, doing its own thing with the same setting/idea

If you get upset just because it's different you're retarded, what would be the value in a direct remake
>>
12 Monkeys without Gilliam is just an average time travel movie.
>>
>>52549004
I always thought that but they must make up for it with the online views or something

Kinda like how showtime leaks it's season premieres for some shows every year, trying to drum up more hype for the series
>>
>>52549053

Well I guess it's a good thing this is a tv series.
>>
>>52549004

You'd think so, but it actually works somehow. GoT and Penny Dreadful both did the same thing and they turned out alright.
>>
>>52549339
Weird, but what reason do people have to tune in next week?
>>
Who is watching the rerun at 11 pm?
>>
>>52549686
i will be. i'm getting drunk and playing guitar so i missed a few scenes the first time.
>>
>>52549646
Most networks are starting to realize to pay attention to more than just ratings, they factor in time delayed viewing, and online viewing through official sources. It won't matter if they tune in next week or not. Also the way Nielsen ratings are calculated it won't affect their ratings unless someone with a Nielsen box watches the episode online and then doesn't tune in
>>
>>52549646

To rewatch it because they liked it. It's that simple really.

>>52549686

Gonna watch the replay then at midnight catch next week's.
>>
So they're putting the next episode on the syfy site at midnight? I'm not at home now and I wanted to watch it with the app on my phone but it's not up yet

Are they just going to update it at midnight with both episodes?
>>
>>52550036

That's what they're saying.
>>
>>52550036
that's what i've been wondering. of course, syfy has a shit website to begin with. when will these shitty framed flash sites go away? it's like an old myspace page.
>>
Who's watching right now?
>>
>>52549987
Rgggh I can't find my Directv member number, looks like I might miss it.

The 12 airing that is,
>>
>>52550659

I'm sure it'll be up in the usual places not long after they put it up on the Syfy site.
>>
Wow, they really cored the life out of the franchise.
This is so sad and limp.
>>
> 5. How difficult is it to follow the time travel?

Matalas: It's not at all confusing. It always makes emotional sense at the very least. We've tested the time travel pretty hard with die-hard time travel fans and novices, and everybody's on board.

6. How does the time travel work?

Fickett: There's a big machine that sends him back in time, and there's a process, something that goes on inside Cole that brings him back to the future.

7. That seems rather imprecise. Can he go to the wrong place and time?

Matalas: Viewers, like the characters on the show, will be learning the rules of time travel as it goes along. This is the first time that everyone has done time travel, and they're not good at it. They're not good at time travel.

8. Can you actually change history?

Fickett: Time can be changed. That's something that wasn't true in the movie. It is true in our series.

and, dropped. if time can be changed in any way imaginable because of reasons then i'm out.

Just finished watching it, I was surprised it wasn't terrible. The time travel rules are fantasy tier, but it set up an interesting mystery, and it was a pilot that didn't feel like it was shoving a bunch of exposition down my throat even though it gave me enough information to understand who everyone was and why they where doing shit

7/10 pilot

so is there a stream for ep 2stream?

I love the title of the second episode
>Mentally Divergent

I forgot that term used in the movie, but I love it.

>Don't mock me my friend. It's a condition of mental divergence. I find myself on the planet Ogo, part of an intellectual elite, preparing to subjugate the barbarian hordes on Pluto. But even though this is a totally convincing reality for me in every way, nevertheless Ogo is actually a construct of my psyche. I am mentally divergent, in that I am escaping certain unnamed realities that plague my life here. When I stop going there, I will be well.

>Are you also divergent, friend?
>>
>>52552807
Just the first, I'm about to watch the second
>>
>>52553066

that was probably my favorite scene in the movie.
>>
>>52548209
He threw a party a few years ago that was open to all time travelers and when none appeared he concluded that time travel does not exist. Maybe in the future he's regarded as a bore to hang out with and no one wanted to break the news to him.
>>
Is ep2 working for anyone? Every time I try to start it, it just freezes on the first frame and never loads
>>
>>52545614
Obvious who unleashes the plague. That brown guy Goin was talkin up at the party. They cast some serious hotties. Hope that catches on cause both are 9/10's.
>>
>>52553343
Or maybe in the future he's dead?
Or maybe the invitation for the party wasn't taken in much consideration so in the future when people invented time travel machines no one remembered about his proposal?
>>
why are people talking about the second episode? what? where are you seeing this

also the pilot was surprisingly good, I could see it on Showtime or FX or something.

An author that lacks the skill to grab you in the first sentence must be writing a textbook.

This might as hell have been a pilot for a Cable movie, stepping away from Gilliam's crafted worldscape and the fatalist nature of the movie results in time travel milquetoast.

you're using words like milquetoast - milk on your toast? seriously? - and it's only been one episode. The world was competently established and clearly set itself apart from the movie, not wanting to repeat it (which was a remake itself), but being heavily inspired and influenced by it a la the critically acclaimed Fargo TV series.

I hope to God they put the character Louie in the tv series, I loved him so much from the movies

>Louie: Why would I pull out my teeth, Bob? That's a no no.

>Louie: You sure fucked up!
>James Cole: Where are you?
>Louie: Ah, you can talk!
>James Cole: My name's not Bob.
>Unknown: Not a prob, Bob. Where'd they send you?
>James Cole: Where are you?
>Unknown: Another cell. Maybe.
>James Cole: What do you mean " maybe" What's that supposed to mean?
>Unknown: Maybe means...maybe I'm in the next cell. Another volunteer like you. Or maybe I'm in the Central Office... spying on ya for all those science bozos. Or, hey... maybe I'm not even here. Maybe I'm just in your head. No way to confirm anything.
>>
>>52554844
You're obviously conversing with someone with a superior vocabulary. And although it's not a crime not to know what milquetoast means, one would assume you'd have the sense or at the very least the curiosity to google it instead of making yourself look like a run-of-the-mill pleb.
>>
>>52545614

>>
>>52554844
Fargo actually had things going for it, it looked good and it had characters capable of standing out.

SyFy Cole didn't have any of the emotional punch of Willis' Cole when he found himself immersed in world pre-collapse. You could sympathize with how disparate and terribly lifeless the future was when Willis became enraptured by a simple thing as music. TV Cole gave us "Mmm, cheeseburger."
>>
>>52555033
i was making a joke because he didn't even use the word right, milquetoast is an adjective used about a person, you can't apply it to time travel. He may as well have said milk toast and conveyed the same information.

Just finished the second ep. They're setting up a lot of mysteries and they've got me a little hooked, crazy girl was cool but seemed a little cliche, the whole make the person with all the answers crazy so even when she tries to give the answers it's in riddles or she's mentally blocked the important info, but I can look past that if they start answering some questions soon

My main concern right now is in the first two episodes we've met two bad guys that say they met cole in their past, his future, meaning his future is already played out. So if he was going to stop the outbreak he would've already stopped it

My theory right now on the endgame of the show is that somehow through his tie traveling shenanigans he is a major factor in the creation of the 12 monkeys and causes the plague, and when they realize this he will probably have to go back in time to kill himself before he goes back in the first place, to stop the whole chain of events

Just a theory though
>>
>>52555150
>milquetoast is an adjective used about a person
Rapidly correcting your mistake through the use of online dictionaries doesn't exactly make you come off as witty. Milquetoast can be used in relation to anything and if there's anything worthy of criticism about the poster, it's putting the word after time travel. Although upon re-reading it does sound a lot better the way he put it.
>>
>>52555300
im not mad, its corny

why "jennifer"? they could have went with kim or something, its just bad writing.
>>
>>52555365
I'm not involved in the milk toast argument, I'd never even heard the word before

But I looked it up and the first two words in the definition are "a person"

That kind of proves you wrong and him right. But hey if arguing about definitions and grammar gets you all hot and bothered go ahead and continue
>>
>>52555375
You getting hung up on a name is retarded, her name has nothing to do with the quality of the show. There are real criticisms to be made, you don't need a good reason to dislike the show, but as far as reasons go that's a shitty complaint.

>Plus I think they wanted to stick with the J name to go along with Jeffrey.

>>52555536
Not salty at all. The writing could be better, especially with that old bitch in the future, she really had no logical reason to be at odds with cold, by her own logic of he is destined by fate then he shouldn't be able to fuck up the girls timeline

Cole comes off as a bit one dimensional but even in the second ep he's starting to show some growth, albeit minimal.

Cassandra getting a lead on where cole is at in the second episode just thrown into her lap was kind of sloppy too, but I think the girl that plays her is doing a really great job, Im liking her a lot more than I thought I would and it's not just because she's pretty.

Then I saw when they posted the first 9 minutes, and heard a lot of positive things from critics who got to see the first 8 episodes a few weeks back.
>>
>just found episode 2 on my on demand menu

okay that old guy with the yellow teeth and the flowers. they're going to have him be from some alternate timeline/future or whatever, aren't they? there's no way SyFy can avoid that in a time travel show.

especially since they can't just use the ending of the movie, so they gotta have a tweest.

Well at the end of the episode he runs into cole and says that they've met before, and insinuates that cole gave him the scar on his cheek

It's pretty clear I think that he's one of the 12 monkeys, assuming it actually is a group of 12 bad guys

>The pilot is being written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who had written for the series Terra Nova.

oh god there's going to be an old sailboat in the desert isn't there

So out of all the movies that inspired tv series which one does /tv/ think is the best (let me know if I'm forgetting any)?

>Bates Motel
>Fargo
>Hannibal
>12 Monkeys

So far I really like 12 Monkeys but I still think it is far too early for me to make a definitive call on it.

But for me the best of those so far has got to be
>Bates Motel

This was fucking painful to watch.
>>
>>52556128
And I meant in recent time, not years back.
>>
>>52555945
Yeah my 6th sense picked up on that too. Like he was another guy sent back in time. Thought it was cool that he was one of the bad guys from Last Action Hero. The crazy guy with the yellow rain coat and ax.
>>
>>52556128
Hannibal is amazing! This show is really cool though.

There is worse. Actually I didn't know it premiered already, and because I'm a masochist, time to find out how much worse.
>>
>>52556128
12 Monkeys is the best movie of that lot, Fargo is the best series.

Wouldn't it be fun if in this 12 Monkeys James Cole is his own father, like he has a relationship with Cassandra and she has Cole as her child? That would be interesting.
>>
>>52556312>>52556128

I'd say Monkeys was the best movie and Bates Motel is the best series.
>>
>>52556128
Rosemary's Baby, Constantine, maybe more. I have yet to watch those though.
>>
>>52556306
Don't listen to that anon, he's full of shit and has bad taste. He's probably the type who would hate it no matter what, because it happens to be based on a film.
>>
I was just happy that in the first episode when Leland said some shit about paradox cole didn't look at the camera and smile and say "good thing I'm immune to paradox" and wink
>>
>>52555787
I never knew Gary Busey suffered a head injury back in 1988, just read that now.
>>
>>52556442

and now I want there to be a series based on Contact, because a Busey was in that.
>>
>>52556365
Constantine is based on the comic, not the movie

But I still don't watch it because it just had to be a fucking network procedural and they can't let him smoke, but the kind of gruesome shit they show on Hannibal is ok for network TV...
>>
>>52556480
I knew it was a comic but I figured the reason the show was greenlit was because of the movie. Would be cool if they said it was based on the comics specifically though.

>A tagline originally suggested for this film was; "The future is in the hands of a man who has none." This was considered to be a confusing tagline, as it made it sound as though he had no hands, as opposed to having no future.

now I want to see a movie or show about a time-traveler with no hands who has to save the future.
>>
>>52546642
Legion wasn't that bad compared to the source material.
>>
>>52556385
Seriously? Is this a meme? The acting was horrible, I couldn't even finish the pilot. Or are we lowering our expectations because it's a SyFy show? I for one am not wasting another minute of my life on this trash.
>>
>>52556530
It is specifically based on the comics, it probably wouldn't have been popular enough for a show without the movie, but they draw their source material from the comics, they didn't just watch the movie and then make up shit based on that. Afaik the characters and demons in the show are all either from the comics or adapted in some form or another from the comics
>>
>>52556592
And this is why in 2016 we will be back to ghost hunter reruns 24/7
>>

> that rule 34 brad pitt
>>
>>52556306
It was pretty good for a TV show, especially one on SyFy. Unless you only bother watching the greatest TV series of all times, this show is certainly passable by any standard of quality. As said, the acting is off, but it doesn't have any great faults.
>>
>>52548495
he was also in breaking bad
>>
>>52556785

rule 63 you mean.
>>
>>52556788
>Unless you only bother watching the greatest TV series of all time
Like what?
>>
>>52556796
I never liked Breaking Bad, I would say this definitely blows Breaking Bad out of the water and into the toilet bowl where it belongs.
>>
>>52556796
no he wasnt he was Pyro from X2
>>
>>52545614
I wonder if the 12 Monkeys as a group will be more insidious in this version....
