Hey /tv/, /mu/tant here. I know very little about film, as I have been, until now, only peripherally interested. However, I am looking to get into film, and am initially interesting in how the psychedelic aesthetic manifested in film. Can anyone recommend some "psychedelic" films?

Otherwise, Maya Deren's shorts, Luis Buñuel, Man Ray especially, they're really known.
The whole avant-garde scene from this era is great.
For more recent movies, Toshio Matsumoto's Dogura Magura can interest you.and Lynch's Rabbits
There are some really cool animated movies by René Laloux that are really weird but cool. Fantastic planets + the shorts he did with Topor are must see. Maybe Gwen, the book of sand, Fehérlófia, Belladonna of Sadness. Tekkon Kinkreet is really psych/oniric in the second part.
Also, Satoshi Kon's movies (especially Paprika I guess) too.
But yeah, The Holy Moutain is an awesome starting point.

Surrealist = Unconscious-fueled art, related to psychoanalysis
Psychedelism = Drug-fueled art
It's kinda related, both are a form of representation of the Unconscious, drugs can allow it to express itself, etc.
A lot of surrealist writers or painters took drugs to try to enhance their perception. All they wanted was to discover the unexplored.
