Is there anyone more based than Shane Carruth?
>>
>>50701066

Does he post on /tv?

I read the synopsis for his next story and it sounds interesting but also kind of boring, like not a lot happens.

Shane, can you make a scifi movie similar to Moon? You'd kick ass in telling a story like that.
>>

Shane's a cutie 3.14.

I'm about 50 pages into the A Topiary script. Fuck, that movie would have been GOAT!

Any money Primer made from DVD sales, licensing to Netflix and the like, tv showings (I've seen it on IFC and HBO before), and the half million it made at the box office went 100 percent to him. He also consulted on Looper.

Why? His work is better than most big budget movies with cities worth of people behind them.

But I guess you are right, there is only one objectively correct method to make art.

I love him but he's not a very good actor, especially compared to the amazing woman he cast against himself in Upstream Color.

Is it a joke that he posts on /tv/ like /lit/ claims Pynchon posts on /lit/ (he did though)?
>>
>>50711739
Yeah if he was a better actor he'd be the next Welles. Doubt he actually posts here though.

As for Pinecone on /lit/...probably not. That guy was smart as fuck though.
>>
>>50711739
There were dubious claims when Upstream Color came out that he was posting here about it but who knows.

Lee Unkrich though is 100% legitimately a fa/tv/irgin.
>>
>>50711806
oh I don't really think that guy was Tommy Pynch I just like propogating the myth, I think Pinecone would approve
>>
Primer is great if not a little too intentionally nebulous. Upstream Color is downright unwatchable.
>>
Do you think he'll ever have a mainstream breakthrough? By that I mean will he ever have a film gross more than 5 million or some notable award nominations/wins?
>>
>>50707049

i don't think it has anything to with pretense at all

i think it just comes down to two things: money and care. he has a vision for his film and he knows that he will do the ustmost he can to bring that to fruition.

it is truly impressive what he has done. it may not be viable for a lot of people and it is stupid in some regards, with production time being one of them. but he has proved that you do not have to have a big production company or crew behind it to make a genuinely good film that can stand up with the blockbusters.

you can have a idea for a film and you can do it by yourself if you have to. it's amazing that everything from upstream color stemmed from him
>>
>tfw he looks 30 but he's actually 42 years-old
>>
>he's able to do pretty much everything that goes into making a movie
>you can't even do one thing.
>>

>Upstream Color is downright unwatchable.
Why's this? It's incredibly easy to follow once you realize what's going on.
>>
Did Shane start this thread to toot his own horn?
>>
I would expect /tv/ to be singing this guys praise since he is relatively unknown and good. He also seems like the embodiment of what /tv/ would want to be; a lone filmmaker creating art outside the grasp of the meddling jewproduction companies.

Strange to see such a mixed reception.

Also, how was it that Prime looked more grainy than a wheat farm yet UC was so beautiful?
>>
He's a bit like Chris Cunningham. While it's fantastic that they are learning every aspect of filmmaking themselves...they're also gettimg old and not generating as much output as they could. They're going to leave a lot undone.

Primer was shot on Super 16. Cheap offcuts at that. Not a lot of money for color grading and the like.

UC was shot on a DSLR. Post production done in his bedroom.

Primer is a minor miracle for it's cost in terms of budget. Just look at Clerks, which cost about 80 grand more.

It was mainly the fault of the digital intermediate we used. Digital scanning increases the grain in an image. If you saw it projected it would be much crisper. The only scene that I think is strictly distracting is the fountain scene and even that looked okay when projected.
>>
>>50712655
It's a self-explanatory post, anon. For example, Moonrise Kingdom was also shot on 16mm and has much less prominent grain.
>>
>>50712576

Clerks - 30k and then Miramax spent another 200k or so on making it releasable and clearing some music rights.

Primer - Apparently completed for 7k

That's obviously a cropped and up-scaled image, even the sd trailer on youtube has less noise. protip, that isn't even film grain, it's digital noise, which obviously has to do with the compression of whatever video file that's from and not the actual movie.
>>
>>50712939

actually it's a 100% crop from an official promo still, which is 3900 x 2351 pixels big, which I assume the size of the 4K master, or close to it.

And of course an SD trailer on YouTube has less noise; that's called compression. More noise = More fidelity

>>
Why are people in this board so fucking retarded?
>>
>>50713070
>I'm perfectly set up to use a GH4 but I might just rent an Alexa or RED.
If you plan on purchasing a camera I'd go with a Blackmagic for the extra dynamic range and more malleable files. the only real advantage I can see with the GH4 is 4k. Renting is probably a better option.
>>
>>50713180
There is no such thing as complete control under a studio. Maybe you'll have creative control but they won't let you near trailers or marketing. I tried with A Topiary and I'd have to get a lot of assurances.

It was crazy. I never knew he was such a big drinker - and the longer the night went on the more drunk and beligerent he got. He assigned a personal rating to all the women in the audience (giving my friend a strong 8 because 'papa like de dark chaclit'). He barely even spoke about filmmaking, just listed off a bunch of directors he could beat in a fight.

I don't even know why they bothered booking him to be honest. By the end he was just lying on the stage shouting words like 'egregious' and 'math-infused storytelling'.

I really hope Shane and Keanu Reeves do a movie together as brothers. They really look alike, or at least share a lot of similar features...

Personally I love Primer, and really wanted to love Upstream Color, but it just doesn't have the staying power that Primer does. I do think it's a very unique, innovative and truly mind-bending film. Unlike most people, I hated the score for the most part, and the digital cinematography really suffered compared to Primer's 16mm. however, when people talk about the possibilites and future of cinema, Carruth is most certainly at the forefront.

really excited for The Modern Ocean, although I wonder if it will have any Caruthian elements besides a byzantine narrative

My prognosis is founded on 3 basic assumptions:

1.) That you did not read the rest of the post, commensurately written in jest, and therefore did not see the intended satire.

2.) You aren't aware of the patterns and rhythms that comprise copypasta, which the post strongly resembles in its substance and candour.

3.) That you did believe everything that post says, and you are in fact a pre-pubescent naif who was born yesterday, and as such you have no concept of humour or satire.
>>
>>50714422
the whole post of a copypasta is that it's adapted to fit the required context of the subject. the subject in this case is a filmmaker, so the context of a live show is nonsensical.
>>
>>50714465
*point
>>
>>50714465

ok, look. I guess you're new here or something. copypasta being hastily adapted to fit the theme of the thread is funny because it's incongruous, not because it's genuinely applicable.

is "Real" Shane still here

what is your top 10 favorite films? you should do a Criterion Top 10 someday

what do you think of Roko's Basilisk? I always thought it felt like something straight out of one your films. is that a fair assumption?

>tfw its 99% not him and I'm just asking questions to noone
>>
>>50715073
What type of sampler was the sampler using?
>>
>>50713501
There's a lot of jockeying for credibility. I have to doubt that the majority of people on /tv/ like or have seen the movies they are talking about, let alone the movies they say they hate.

>>50715099
I don't like doing top tens. It changes depending on how I feel. I don't own that much criterion either. I'll just say that I have a lot of the influences you'd expect and some you wouldn't. The Limey by Stephen Soderbergh for instance.

Roko's Basilisk is interesting but I don't think an AI would have the ability to violate the laws of physics and retroactively effect lives. The idea sounds more Lovecraftian if he had the chance to live in the modern world.

would you ever do a Criterion for Primer? their print remasters are pretty insane. word has it they're working on the famously damaged McCabe & Mrs Miller right now

also, I saw Primer when I was maybe 12 after my dad and I saw it in a Dallas video-store and it essentially kick-started my love of films along with a few others (namely Akira). now whenever I watch it it brings me back to Dallas and I feel very comfy

do you still keep up with Soderbergh? I'd imagine as a "one-man-band" yourself you'd see him as a kindred spirit. I just read recently that he's not returning as director for Magic Mike XXL, but as cinematographer, which is probably the first time that's ever happened in Hollywood.
>>
>>50716381
I'm glad I could help.

Soderbergh is really tired of dealing with executives and is extremely skeptical about the direction of studio movies. Being a cinematographer carries less stress and less frustration because he won't have to deal directly with executives.
>>
>>50716381
Oh, about Criterion, they haven't approached me. I would probably do it if they wanted to.
>>
>>50716571
Shane, write a book.
What other websites do you browse?
>>
>>50716685
I wouldn't know where to start writing a book.

Reddit, a few boards here, DVXuser, nothing spectacular.

While you're here, I just wanted to say good fucking work. I'm a writer myself (only a writer, I really don't know how you manage music and directing and shit on top of it all) and you've been a serious inspiration. Which says a lot, considering I can think of only a few other examples, most of them being books. Most of them relatively old books, at that. It's in the way you think, and it's a gift not many people have or even understand. I'm immensely grateful that you're using it.

Shane is homosexual.
Just look his interviews, his mannerisms are feminine.
>>
>>50717033
I did. Fucking irritating, I've been meaning to say that whenever I got the chance.
>>
>>50717072
>his mannerisms are feminine

And? There are plenty of straight guys that look gay as fuck, minor subtleties don't mean shit. Also I'm pretty sure he would just say it, who from his fanbase is really going to give a flying fuck.
>>
>>50717119
Those guys that look gay as fuck would be openly gay if the culture/society didn't stigmatized them, even with recent social "advcances", being gay makes you a faggot.
>>
>>50716927
It doesn't really matter. I'll keep making movies regardless.

>>50716945
I guess we picked the same word for the trip. It's a pretty common word.

>>50717002
Thanks, but I don't think anything I do is actually that hard. All of the information anyone needs to do what I do is available on the internet. The hardest part is the writing and execution of an idea.
>>
>>50717178
What word?
>>
>>50717197
Patrician
>>
>>50717197
You know that defeats the purpose of a trip, right?
>>
>>50717164
Some, but I actually know genuinely straight guys who other people thought were gay. And they would have told me, considering I'm bi. What am I going to do, tell them to get the fuck out faggot?
>>
>>50717234
Try sucking their cock while looking in their eyes, if you see them flinch they might be straight.
>>
>>50717225
Then get a new one. Also I'm
>>50717002
and I was mainly referring to the writing. Most people write a script because they want to be famous, they want to make a movie to show off to their friends and family. They don't care what it is, as long as other people like it. But you, and others like you, tell stories because they need to be told. It's not as common as you think.
>>
>>50717276
That's the exact opposite of what this conversation was about.
>>
>>50717411
How about you shut the fuck up you fucking retarded faggot ok sorry that was rude and you're right it doesn't matter that he's gay, he makes great movies and he should be proud, or not, I don't know his stance on being proud, perhaps it's too invasive to the human psyche and similar sounding stuff.

I hope he liked Spring Breakers.
>>
>>50717378
I wouldn't say my stories need to be told but I think that a lot more people are interested in making something of artistic merit than you think especially as they get older. In teens I can see what you are talking about, the desire for unwarranted notoriety is pretty pervasive in young ages but if someone is still interested in making something, the actual act of making it, they probably have a lot more integrity than you think.
>>
>>50717558
Fair enough, though you give more credit to humanity as a whole than I ever could. It could be cynicism, I prefer to think of it as realism (which I suppose is what a cynic would say). Okay, this will sound odd and might also be hard to believe, but regardless I can do this thing where I assume the mindset and point of view of someone else once I understand enough about how their mind works, and fuck dude your head is one of the comfiest places ever. It's the equivalent of a dark room with a lit fireplace and a light snow outside. I don't really know how else to put it. It's very...calm, I guess.
>>
>>50717721
What are you babbling about? You're stupid.
>>
>>50717721
And as a footnote in case I have nothing else of relevance to say, 10/10 would fuck senseless.
>>
>>50717721
Well, I have a hobbesian view of man and nature on a societal level. On an individual basis I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. My cynicism will come out in a project I have planned for much later in my career.

Have you looked at the Sony a7s as a camera to use for shooting, my god, the footage on that, with that ISO.

Seriously look at a Sony a7s or Sony F55s if you are looking for a camera to shoot with

The s-log on the two is beautiful
>>
>>50717933
/r/ing pics, I need them to-uh-prove that it's really you. Yeah that's it, I don't believe that you're the real Shane. It's not like I have a massive crush on you or anything. I swear.
>>
>>50718206
Yes, I have seen it. It seems like a good single purpose camera but it overall less versatile than the GH4. I have looked at the Sony F5 and F55.

Do you even have proof of him posting on /tv/ tho?
>>
>>50718339
Is it because the a7s doesn't have internal 4K recording? You can fix that with an Atomos Shogun or Ninja.

Don't knock it till you compare the two live.
