I really want to adapt the Elliott Rodger Manifesto into a screenplay but I don't know where to start. The reason I'm interested in doing this is because it's such an interesting story but the parts of it that interest people aren't the things about the story that are actually interesting. Someone is gonna make a movie about him (the story is too good to pass up) but it's either gonna be some sort of bullshit cautionary tale or portray him as a "tragic" character. Nobody is going to focus on how he was born into an elite Holywood family or how his parents bought him a Lambo and tried to fly him to Vegas to fuck a hooker before they even thought about counseling.
Any advice? I'm totally serious about this.
Try this half-baked approach.
Two approaches for the same idea/concept/theme/situation is pure bullshit fantasy, the other is stark brutal reality.
Elliot meets a girl. First scene, he totally fucks her or kills her with his laser vision. The next scene, the harsh truth.I told you it's a half-baked approach, didn't I?
Do you want to actually have the shooting in it? Is that your ending?
It could be a twisted coming of age story. But would glorify him too much. Very hard to do a movie on someone like that.
Your main theme would be isolation. Explore what lack of love does to a person. Start from there. Think about the point where Elliot stops being a sympathetic victim and becomes a deranged would-be serial shooter.

Forget a screenplay. Go for a sitcom. Just edit his vlog to have a laugh track every time he says something awkward.

I want to make something campy but not TOO campy. It can't be realistic because this story is in and of itself not realistic. Imagine stylized, Fincheresque shots of Rodger walking down the red carpet at the Hunger Games premier seething with hatred while "Monster" by Kanye plays in the background. I want the tone to be like Larry Clark's "Bully", one of my favorite films, where the audience will be disturbed and uncomfortable but also darkly amused.
I'm not going to take the hipster route and sarcastically glorify him but I'm not going to spell it out that it's wrong to murder people. The opening scene will be friends and family sobbing hysterically at the scene with a VO from the last few pages of the book

You should also watch his Harvard lectures. I know its a bit much to ask for you to watch these but I can assure you, if you are serious about this shit then watch this shit because its gonna take you deep down in to the resentful mind and what dynamics and processes that lead to it and so on.

A few more things I thought up:
-The movie will end with the shooting as described. After Rodger shoots himself their will be a montage of his family and the families of the victims grieving with another voiceover from Rodger. "After Hours" by the Velvet Underground will play over the credits.
-The title of the movie will be "A Life of Pleasure and Sex", which is a phrase he uses to describe the life he wants to live at UCSB, after seeing it in the movie Alpha Dog.
-Rodger will be portrayed as a sniveling pussy, there's no other way
-There will be sparse voiceovers throughout the movie, taken directly from his manifesto, since so much of the drama is internal. He's a self-absorbed person so a voiceover is the only way to carry this over.
-This kid was from an elite Hollywood family so there will be some serious Hollywood production values. No "indie film" bullshit, lots of sweeping shots of LA and Santa Barbara. When he goes to Morocco and Paris I want it on location. Since I know nobody will ever film this I'll go as hard as I want.

Don't buy into the typical media portrayal of him being a monster, but don't go overboard on trying to make him sympathetic. Research and show him as he really was and what lead up to the attack. There were a lot of factors involved, but the primary reason was neglected mental illness.
Also, don't show any aftermath of the shooting, everybody already knows that part, they want to see him alive. End the movie with him shooting himself. You could reference the scene in taxi driver where Travis pretends to shoot himself, but Elliot actually does it
