Is the ROTJ 2.0 workprint worth downloading? Is it noticeably improved?
>>
>>64610554
according to this 1980s usenet user, it will never improve.

"As a decedent S_F watcher, the latest SW movie was a disappointing fard.

The only new features were some aliens (mostly disappointing)
and the sky cycles. The Orkish creatures guarding Jabba's house were
cartoon imitations. Jabba itself was a combination of one of the early
muppets from the first year of "Friday Night Live", and Sidney Greenstreet.
( The setting of jabba's room was reminiscent of the fat man's bar from
Casablanca. ) All the space scenes are now dull, after 6 years of
space-special-effects-exploitation movies.
It has been mentioned that the introduction of characters was confusing,
if you did not see the previous films. But even so, I got the feeling that
someone was acting with a green fozzy-bear muppet in one of the scenes.
NO; this film did not add anything to the genre of SF movies, but just
gave children, producers, and trivial space opera boffos something

to enjoy,

>One of the films shown at the Filmex Fantasy Marathon was "The Empire
Strikes Back", and Irvin Kirshner, the director of that film, appeared
briefly after the film to answer questions. Most of what he said has
come out before, but he did have a few interesting comments.

>1). He was offerred "Return of the Jedi", but declined, and has no
intention of doing any other "Star Wars" movies, should Lucas ever get
around to them. He is hoping to do an unrelated sf/romance film some time
in the future. It will not be a special effects spectacular, as he said he's
had enough of them for one lifetime.

>2). He was displeased with the way RotJ solved many of the problems set
up in TESB, and practically said that he considered RotJ to be a step
backwards.

>3). He confirmed that the plots of the other six films exist in an almost
complete form, but refused to go into details. He also had no news on
when and if Lucas intends to continue the series.

These old usenet posts are gold.

Worst muppet: the blue elephant - gimme a break.

Worst scene: the mushy stuff with Han & Leia on Endor. Also, the
strangulation of Pizza the Hutt was just not convincing. That chain didn't cut
into Jabba's neck (such as it was) at all.

Best part: when Luke slices off DV's hand, sees the machinery, and then flexes
his own mechanical hand wondering if the Emp is right about his "destiny".

Best joke: when Han is hot-wiring the back door and says "I think I got it", and
another set of doors closes. Thank goodness at least the Millenium Falcon
worked this time.

Although I thought the final confrontation with the Emperor was the best scene
in the movie, I agree with the comments that it was a rather hokey way for him
to go, down the hatch that is. I don't understand why he didn't just turn his
high-voltage arcing on Darth Vader when he lifted him up. He just stood there
frozen, uselessly zapping the ceiling on his way to be dumped. But it was great
the way all the excess blue stuff came splashing back up the well after he hit
bottom. Boy he sure had a lot of it stored up!

RotJ had its moments, but I think my thirst for SW movies has now been
quenched.
>>
>>64611668
Honestly, if it wasn't for the 'NOOOO' scene, I'd probably let the others go and buy the bluray.

But that change literally destroys the best moment in the entire movie and makes the official bluray version unwatchable in my opinion. I don't like Jedi Rocks or Hayden Christensen in ROTJ, but i'd give them a free pass if it wasn't for Vader being ruined.

For some reason, this discussion has switched over to sf-lovers and out
of movies. For those of you who read movies, but not sf-lovers, you
missed some interesting stuff from Jim Hester about Jedi.

Anyhow, I agree with Hester's ideas. His plot improvements and complaints
are quite good. Also, Marshall's observation that the emporer was so intent
on frying Luke that he didn't respond to Vader's attack quickly enough
makes sense to me.

I liked the Star Cruiser smashing into the Death Star II too.
(Question: will there be a Death Star //e?) But I thought the process
photography for that particular shot was a bit cruddy.

But let's face it. This movie was made only for the effects. George
has lost it. My friend Paul, who is a student at USCinema, quoted one
of his teachers to me once. This teacher said, "Old directors don't
die, they become cinematographers." What that means, is, when old
directors lose their story-telling ability, they start concentrating on
the imagery. George has clearly lost his story-telling ability.

We'll have to see about Spielburg... (He's my other hope.)

COME BACK SHANE!!!!

"Saw RotJ last night and have to admit I was *extremely* disappointed. Lots
of good stuff, but too much silliness. This may sound strange, but I felt
it to be much less 'real' than the first too. my credibility is willing to
be stretched pretty far, but not that far. I'll flame away for a while and
then get to the stuff I liked and a conclusion. Some examples...
The creatures! Way too many FAKE-looking creatures. Especially in Jabba's
den. That blue smurfy thing really bothered me. Also the 'orc-like' creatues
that greeted visitors to Jabba-- big soft things with dull teeth and flab.
The guy with the tail growing out of his head was good, though. I was also
disappointed in Jabba, himself. Looked like an overgrown hefty bag with fake
eyes. Nice job on the tongue, though. There were simply too many muppets and
soft-looking creatures, especially for a den of villainy.

Princess Leia sure took being chained to Jabba, the epitomy of slime, pretty
well, casually sleeping against him when Luke walked in….Conclusion. It may sound from my flames above that I didn't like RotJ. This
is not true. I truly enjoyed it, but I was disappointed because it left the
spirit of episodes IV and V. It was simply TOO CUTE to 'be believed'. I am
afraid that I will not pay to see this movie again, as I did SW (17 times)
and TESB(12 times), at least not in the near future. Oh, well. I hope that
Episodes I-III and VII-IX (if they are made) return to the spirit of adven-
ture that was in SW and TESB, but seems to be lacking in RotJ.

Flame away!

Shane"

not be a case of harmlessly or unknowingly posting material to the net. There
is no legal question here except that of exactly which crimes the prosecutor

>It was a messy movie. The action was forced, rather than
novel and sustained. Lots of busy work. It did answer a lot
of questions though--leaving some new ones. One thing which
I find curious is Luke's grasp of the force. He seemed
unable in several cases to use it on lower animals--whereas
Obi Won seemed to be able to charm the beasts well enough.
Do we know any more about Jabba? He certainly was a separate
species. Darth Vader as Dark Father was, now, obvious in the
extreme. Your question as to why Vader dealt with Leia
differently during her torture seems to hold up. She was not
only his daughter--though he didn't know it, but she
possessed some rudiments of the Force, maybe (we don't know
anything about the female use of the force--it might be a
sex-linked trait, passed through but not given to the
females).

>So. Vader lost his arm in a dual with who? The emperor? What
was all that before about falling into a volcano? Can you
duel with yourself and fall into a volcano? (mentioning the
previous info we had about Vader and why he was in his iron
lung). Who was the actor that played Vader in the end... I
didn't seem to see him in the credits.
>>
>>64611164
I mostly agree, the whole Jabba sequence is just too silly especially compared to the darker sleazy aesthetics of the Cantina in A New Hope.

Return of the Jedi in general pisses me off, especially the concept that Vader gets to be a Force Ghost just because he saved his fucking son.

Luke's appearances in future SW movies I think we should all assume that the time span between each mini-trilogy is much greater than that between the three movies so far. Thus, since it is claimed that different (human) actors will be used for the other movies, there ought to be at least a generation or two between episodes 6 and 7 (and 3 and 4), or possibly a lifetime, if your theory about Luke as a hologram is correct.

i thought that the ending of the ROTJ was dreadful. the film makers
stooped to a "Walt Disney" style "all-smiles" ending, just like the
first Star Wars movie ending!

a better ending would have been to cut the movie right when the second
Death Star explodes. Just freeze frame the explosion and roll the credits.

just before the explosion show Luke getting away before the Death Star's doom.
(a nice contrast to Vader's escape). omit the bit about Han resolving
the "love triangle", or put in earler in the movie. have Han find out
that: Luke is in the Death Star that is just about to be blown up,
and insert the "he is my brother" text.

James Cameron Auteur?? (was SPIDERMAN MOVIE??)

[email protected] (Mungra DA) writes:
: WHat is wrong with having a fascination for JC ?
: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! He is one of the few people in Hollywood
: with TRUE VISION!!
:
: Everytime I watch the Terminator I discover something that I
: had not noticed before. Same with The Abyss and Aliens.
Not only was T2 an awesome, two bags of popcorn movie, I was amazed at
some of the themes that Cameron had managed to insert into the film. No,
its not a "Casablanca" or a "Citizen Kane", but I definitely noticed
Cameron working out some personal issues in the film.

After having done T(1), Aliens, and The Abyss, I noticed an almost reckless
abandon with his characters in T2. For instance the Model 101's (okay,
arnie) solution to most predicaments: just take the bullets. Is that any
way to treat (one of) your protagonist(s)? I took that imagry to suggest
that Cameron is a little weary after all these rather destructive movies.
I was also very pleased that the authorities made someone answer for
incredible amount of destruction of property in the first movie. Alas, it
was Mom O'Connor, which I took to mean that not only is Cameron weary of
these movies, but its making it increasingly difficult for him to make
something smaller scale, but more emotionally ambitious. Then there is
Sara's dream, or rather, her epiphany, that "It doesn't have to end this
way." Cameron seems to say, must I end the film with massive destruction
to property and life and limb? And finally, with the second terminator
being voluntarily lowered into the firey pit, he was bringing to a close
this particular style of film. Yes, he'll still make the rock'em sock'em
action pic, but maybe half the *dialogue* won't consist of gunfire.

James Cameron Auteur?? (SPIDERMAN MOVIE??)

I also happen to love Jim Cameron. He knows how to throw in enough twists
and turns in action to really keep you riveted (the best example of that
being T2, IMO his best yet).
But what I really like about him is the fact that he takes a sledgehammer
to the 'damsel in distress' archetype that has been clogging up action
flicks since day 1. In both Ripley (Aliens) and Sarah Connor, Cameron gives
us women that fight and save the day rather than being fought for (or over)
and having to be saved themselves by the virile hero. He also has great taste in women. His real life partners sre impressive ;produces Gale Anne Hurd,
with whom he made Terminator, and subsequent life partners
were director Kathryn (Near Dark) Bigelow (whose movies do
seem to have something in common with Cameron's)
and later on Linda Hamilton (after T2).

Even a 4K restoration made from the negatives will never be as good as Mike Verta's Star Wars Legacy.

They won't clean up the prints with laser, they won't make dirt maps for each frame and manually remove them, they won't look for color blobs and fix them, they won't be in contact with the original crew who did all the special effects.

They will just scan it, apply incorrect colors and shitty DNR. Scenes lile the sandcrawler shot, or the shot of Luke and hewasagoodfriend.exe's speeder crossing Mos Eisley right after highground.exe's mind trick will look grainy and terrible in any official restoration.

From Mike Verta's FAQ:

>Ur a stoopid looser Gorge Lucas CREATED these flms he cAn do watEVr he wants!!! fanboy faggit!!

Thanks for playing.

>Well, you could say that Han shooting first was just a "production mistake," like not putting Jabba in the movie. Where do you draw the line? Seems like a very difficult distinction to make.

I agree. And if you'll forgive me, I think it takes a person with 1) an artistic sensibility and understanding of drama and 2) a master of the Star Wars aesthetic. I like to think I have both of those qualities.

...

Damn, Mike Verta's got a bit of sass and a lot of confidence.

This guy has been restoring Star Wars for over 15 years. He started with Laserdiscs and otherwise terrible copies and prints, and by the end of his restoration he was using pristine prints, including Technicolor prints.

This guy recreated the original master negatives' film grain by comparing the grain of each print and extracting what it was on every copy. He rebuilt each frame by taking information of each respective frame of each print he had, while being careful about not to "enhance" or "fix" the image. He did not do a neutral scan of each print, he scanned each print by taking all the available color information (so the raw scans has like, for example, too much red than what it appears in the print at eyesight) and then manually color corrected.

Look at his videos on Vimeo, or his thread at OT.com. The guy's our only hope.

Where do I download this v2.0 from? Also, what is this Team Negative1 stuff? Where do you download that?

team negative1's scans are only available on private trackers.
Harmy's Despecialized Editions can be found on pretty much any public tracker.

Wait until you find the WOWOW version of Raiders, a 1080p scan of a 16mm Technicolor print of Song of the South, a DCP of Back to the Future without the EE, DNR and crappiness of the official BD, and more stuff.

I'm still waiting for the eventual scan of a 35mm Technicolor print of "Star Wars" that is in the making. Pic related.

You are asking for a flagrant, solicited violation of US patent law. This will
not be a case of harmlessly or unknowingly posting material to the net. There
is no legal question here except that of exactly which crimes the prosecutor
will choose to charge you with. So far, the only one that I am aware of is
solicitation of an illegal act. Anyone who assists you will be an accomplice
at best.

I haven't downloaded it, mostly because it's like 40GB in size and it's not a great improvement in terms of video quality, although it does not suffer some glitches the BD has on fast-moving shots with background lights and stuff.

The WOWOW of Raiders looks nice, without the orange tint of the BD, but I think I have heard it's still not a good representation of how Raiders could look given a wonderful preservation. Could I be wrong, through maybe my memory is playing games with me.

>you can buy a reel on eBay right now
>>
>>64615707
Star Wars was one of the last films to have Technicolor prints, and only because Technicolor's plant in UK was still operative up until 1979 iirc.

RotJ had low fade prints, Empire maybe had one too.

Nevertheless, Technicolor prints aren't perfect. They're grainier than regular prints (but since Technicolor prints are of lesser generation than theatrical prints, it is compensated), and they have their own particularities with color, from what I have heard.

Still, it looks damn good, even if a very high quality 4K restoration, or Legacy, looks better.
>>
>>64615481
Yeah that's the word I was referring to. I agree with you though, I'll always choose the despecialized versions with whatever imperfections they may have over the blurays.
>>
So what's the absolute best indisputable highest quality version of Star Wars out there?
>>
>>64614513
The holograms have always looked low quality.
>>
...So, why would I want TeamNegative1's scans?
Sure Harmy has missed some special edition changes and are still in but the video is grainier.
>>
>>64615828
Legacy.
Will not be available to the public because Lucasfilm warned MVerta. There's still hope they will use it for a restoration.

Recently the Library of Congress has been asked by Disney to make a 2K scan of one of the prints the Library has. It seems Disney would use it as a reference for an eventual restoration, which seems to be on their future plans. They haven't made any move against Harmy given the nature of the project, however they would be very pissed if Legacy, which has more than enough quality to compete against professional restorations, were released to the public. There has been rumours of Disney having wanted to release the OUT before TFA, but for whatever reasons they have posponed them for 2017, "Star Wars"'s 40th anniversary.

In any way, Viriot from stevehoffman's forums worked for Lucasfilm in the 2000s and confirmed that, despite the degradation of the negatives, it still still possible to use 99% of the negatives for a professional restoration, with the remaining 1% being sourced from first generation interpositives.

Still, even an official restoration will probably not look as good as Verta's Legacy. They won't work at every single element of every single frame with the same knowledge and passion and interest Verta had, nor they will contact the original crew for information.
>>
>>64615870
The earlier workprints are very grainy, but they have improved over time by automatic clean up, manual clean up and just using better prints. The overall look is also nice, sometimes I go back to Harmy's and I found it painful and less funny.
>>
>>64616030
>will not be made available because lucasfilm warned MVerta
Then how do the despecialized editions stay up?
I'd say those are cutting in on Disney's sales worse than any restoration could.
>>
>>64616154
They know about Despecialized, but given the nature of the project, they mostly give it a pass. Harmy is still releasing them in 720p and using SD sources, but even when he will eventually switch to HD only sources and 1080p, Despecialized could never look as good as an official 4K-made restoration, even if the official restoration pales in comparison against Legacy.

Nevertheless, the situation is tricky. Harmy is using private sources now (he was given Sebastian Shaw's eyebrows from a private 4K scan of RotJ), sometimes even he has access to internal sources (he posted a photo of a raw frame of the official scan of RotJ in the forums), even if he doesn't use said internal sources for Despecialized. So, how knows.
>>
>>64616030

Was this Legacy edition for just A New Hope or for all three?
>>
>>64616030
>Disney restoring Star Wars only in 2k
Sounds like bullshit
>>
>>64616364
>They know about Despecialized, but given the nature of the project, they mostly give it a pass.
That makes no sense financially.
More people will download the DE because "muh childhood memories" than they will a version that has a higher resolution.

As for what Harmy is doing and how he's doing it, nothing but respect for the guy.
>>
>>64616403
Verta is not a fan of ESB and RotJ. He likes them, he can enjoy them, but he's in love with SW. It seems that movie changed his life a d made him pursue a creative career.

So, Legacy is limited to SW, but he has said that, if he has access to pristine prints of ESB, he may reconsider it.

>>64616428
Considering their atrocious record for their BD, it's not really hard to believe.

Anyway, I said "2K scan as a reference". They won't actually use it other than "that's how the movie looks".

>>64616434
You will be surprised as how many Lucas apologists are out there, or how many people would be happy with a SE-based release that eliminates the worst changes such as Hayden, NOOOOOOO, Jabba in SW and all that stuff.

It will probably hurt their sales a little, but consider that we're talking about a movie whose original theatrical cut is completely unavailable. Disney knows this, they know there's a market for the OUT, and since Fox still retains distribution rights for V and VI until 2020 (and SW forever), they aren't pursuing legal actions.
>>
>>64616588
I guess you're right.
>>
>>64616588

Thanks for the info. I'll be paying closer attention to news on all this restoration stuff from now on.
>>
>>64610554
Now that SW is with disney the lawyers will take action. say bye bye to these guys.
>>
>>64616761
You know that Disney has owned Lucasfilm for over three years at this point and no one has gone after Harmy?

Disney is aware of how popular the despecialized editions are and to go after them without providing an alternative uncut release would earn the ire of many of the fans.
