Fucking B A S E D.
Do you think it deserves an oscar?
>>
>>64411050
I think if the Oscars came down to The Big Short, Carol, and Spotlight (which it most likely will), I am pulling for The Big Short in this one. Even though it's not a particularly impressive film, I think it was definitely entertaining and infromative, which is more I can say for the other two. A lot of the detractors call it "infotainment" but there was some solid humanity, like Mark with his brother and Michael with his glass eye (this is the best Christian Bale has been since The Fighter by the way). I also enjoyed Gosling's Dicaprio impression.

Overall however, The Big Short was inferior to Wolf of Wall Street, which didn't tiptoe around the stupidity of the victims like this movie did. I also *hated* Brad Pitt's character. It was fucking 12 Years a Slave all over again. I wish he wouldn't pick these roles.
>>
Interesting that those four all have some kind of brain problems happening.
>>
>>64411309
what was Brad Pitt's brain problem?

My friend went to see it and said no one was in the crowd. It may win something but the movie and the message will be completely forgotten.
>>

Doomsday prepper level paranoid.
>>
Can somebody explain how Bale's character managed to predict the crisis with years of anticipation?
>>
>>64411497
He figured out that when the rates went up automatically in 2007 there were simply too many delinquent loans out there to make all the money back and very few people would pay the banks back.
>>
>>64411538
That sounds way too simple. Only HE realized that? Are all americucks that dumb?
>>
>>64411736
I imagine a lot of math teachers and such had an inkling (notice all those houses up for sale midway through the movie) but Christian Bale was in a position where he had access to ALL the information on the loaners (all that info he asked the interns to get for him at the beginning). I imagine he was the only guy who was not only in the best position to find out but also the most motivated to do so. As demonstrated everyone thought the real estate market was rock solid and would always be.
>>
>>64411736
Greedy is the proper word
>>
It's about lazy prince's using immoral tactics to cheat job creators. Fuck this socialist bullshit.
>>
>>64411736
Different anon here. I think it's as much about nobody at that level of the industry caring in the first place as nobody being smart enough to catch it. people on tinfoil forums were talking about it in 2007
>>
Is there a screener out?
>>
>>64411050

>>
>>64411161
>he Big Short was inferior to Wolf of Wall Street, which didn't tiptoe around the stupidity of the victims

yea fuck me right people lost their entire livelihoods but let's show how "stupid" these victims are instead of the perpetrators of this entire scheme

literally fuck off.

Also I didn't even REALIZE that Ben was Brad Pitt, thank god for horrible screener quality.
>>
>>64411452
I"m sorry wasn't it justified because the economic system did collapse?

Is it just "lol tin foiler hatter" if they legitimately knew that there was going to be massive issues with the financial system?
>>
>>64413621
dude, remember the stripper in the movie? she took out MULTIPLE timebomb loans on multiple houses. The majority of those who sunk the whole system were just like her, or the landlord who fucked over his tenants. Greed and stupidity is a dangerous combination. I wished the movie focused more on those idiots rather than just the bankers.
>>
>>64413931
It wasn't there fault though they take loans they can't pay back, it's the bankers who let them have these loans!!!

Also the whole system collapsed not because people where defaulting on bad loans, but because people(bankers) where putting these shitty loans altogether into CDO's which had triple A credit ratings...

How can you victim blame when none of this would've happened if the bankers themselves weren't greedy and stupid?

They're the fucks that decided this scene of CDOs and invisible CDOs or whatever the fuck happened in those final scenes was a good idea, not fucking average Joe on the street.
>>
>>64413679
I wasn't entirely using ''lol tin foil hatter'' as an insult. He isn't fearful of a financial crisis, he is certain of a total system failure. IMO that's part of the reason he helped them. It's a subtle character/performance but all the signs are there if you know what to look for. Eats healthy survivalist food, spergs out about security, moved to a state known for being a good place to build a bunker and so on.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
>>
>>64414056
Hey I agree the bankers got too hedonistic and disgraceful but they aren't entirely to blame. Government also let them run roughshod because it was boosting globalization and infrastructure. Poor people just needed money to keep up with their mounting expenses. Nobody saw the big picture. Thankfully America's recovered but it took way too long and now are resolve is weaker than ever.
>>
>>64413931
I bet you're the sort of person who believes payday loans are a good thing, you dumb fuck.
>>
>>64414072
It's not paranoia if there is legitimately someone out to get you, and in this case a legitimate chance of a system collapse, which was true.

>>64414161
They are entirely to blame, if people can't afford a loan you don't give it to them.

If people can't afford a loan and have a high chance of defaulting, you don't go on to make massive amounts of bets on these loans.

Also the bankers are the ones who created the system of CDOs which was a purposeful way of hiding how bad the loans really were, and try to make them into something they weren't.

I don't think you can blame the people AT ALL because they are victims of predatory practices, it's like blaming the woman for getting raped.. kind of.
>>
>>64413931
There are meant to be credit checks to ensure that the person taking the loan is in a financially valid place to pay it back. In a way this is saving them from themselves.

These weren't being performed. I.e. Its the fucking bankers fault, not the poor people taking the loans.
>>
>>64413931
In the movie they make sure to point out that the bankers responsible tried and shifted blame on minorities, immigrants, and even teachers. If you remember back in 2008 and after, this is exactly what happened. Congratulations being a moron who fell for it, anon.

>>
This movie ROCKS by the way, sure it's not as entertaining as Wolf of Wall Street but it tells a story that really needs to be told, in a way that dumb mother fuckin Americans can understand.

I really really liked how they would explain a difficult financial concept once through the narrative, then they'd cut out to a famous celebrity to give ANOTHER explanation in case the LOW IQ Amerilards had trouble understanding. It also showed when you had to shut the fuck up and pay attention, this bit is important!!

>>64414374
In my country they just won't give you the fucking loan if you can't pay it back/ don't have a high enough income, weird how the bankers who were giving out these loans didn't even care if the consumer could pay it back or not.
>>
>>64414374
I'm taking what actually happened at face value you fucking moron. Let's blame the people at the absolute bottom of the totem who have zero power and influence, and let bankers off. You really thought this one out, anon.

Speaking as an NY banker who currently works in on a commercial mortgage backed securities desk, I thought the film was O.K. if you take it for it's Hollywood entertainment value.

The film doesn't totally capture the entirety of the crisis, and blatantly omits quite a bit of government culpability that began in the Clinton administration (Hollywood won't touch Bill). Unsurprisingly, bankers are portrayed as the bad guys. The film doesn't even talk about the concept of "dumb money."

Furthermore, Michael Lewis pretends like he knows way more about the MBS market than he actually does. The man worked on a government bond desk and never even got to touch mortgage bonds during his career.

I feel like I watched a different movie from the rest of you. The editing & shooting style were so amateurish, I thought I'd downloaded some kind of rough cut by mistake. It dumbs down the issues to the point of literally insulting the audience's intelligence. And it was just a mess. It would've been interesting if McKay had just committed to making a star-studded video essay, but then he weakened it with half-assed attempts at character development, subplots, and emotional manipulation.

I like the cast, I like Adam McKay, I'm interested in the subject matter, I was looking forward to this one. But honestly, it was the worst movie we could've gotten as the sum of those parts. It'd be ridiculous if this wins awards in a year with such strong competition.

You simply didn't get it; Wolf of Wall Street doesn't sugarcoat the message in moral grandstanding courtesy of a cunty Steve Carrell, a hippy Brad Pitt, or a slick underdog Ryan Gosling. People on Wall Street were drug fiends, should they have not shown that? Wolf portrayed Wall Street workers as a gang- a cult, even. Big Short was an underdog story with infotainment overtones. Wolf of Wall Street was a look into the abyss.

Is this your first time dealing with subtext? Holy shit you actually need things spelled out for you. No wonder you preferred The Big Short: A movie so black and white they actually had Ryan Gosling tell the audience that he was "no hero". Give me a fucking break. In Wolf, Jordan Belfort doesn't care what the audience thinks of him because the real Jordan Belfort doesn't care what you think of him. He already won. The movie shows how he did it, demonstrating how fucked up and hedonistic the world of finance is. It's a truly important movie.

Movies about banking and finance which is a subject that is inherently out of a lot of peoples grasp needs to be easily digestible, especially one on the 2008 financial crisis.

Did you find the parts where they left the narrative and brought in an actor to explain complex financial concepts to be "easily digestible" and if so, why is that a bad thing? Shouldn't you be trying to educate the audience to the facts to the best of your ability?

Shouldn't their be no ambiguity in the message the movie sends because it's obvious the bankers did some horrible criminal shit? why do you think seeing their lavish life style should have any bearing on their actions leading up to the financial crisis of 2008? why shouldn't a movie on the subject be absolutely clear to what it's intention is?

because then it's not doing anything novel or interesting, rather just parroting numerous thinkpieces and documentaries that have surfaced since the crisis. Wolf of Wall Street mocks the audience for letting the bankers do what Jordan Belfort did, and is thus a more acerbic work. The Big Short hoots and hollers hoping to rile up some kind of revolution but it just comes off as impotent grandstanding. A movie like Wolf of Wall Street could inspire the next Lenin.

Pretty sure the bank is meant to go "from your income and savings there is literally no way you'll be able to pay off this house, no loan for you."

but they didn't do that cause they were greedy fo the shekels.

To be fair, people on those forums talk about every eventuality to the point where if an Alien crawled out of Trumps head they could take credit for already predicting that. Crazies will talk every year about a collapse of modern civilization just in case it happens so they can say "I told you so"

Well apparently his real life counterpart is making small investments in water now. So maybe he has a hunch that water supplies are going to be an issue very soon. Not that that would be a huge surprise, but maybe most people are too busy enjoying the good life to think that will be an issue any time soon.

I agree with the higher education bubble thing, but most student loans are way less than a house loan, so it will take awhile before the bubble hits hard. I'm thinking in the next couple of generations, once the major flux of immigrants and their children are established and seeking the same level of education as the rest. It's already at a point where there are more people getting an education than there are jobs available in that specific field of study. Most will get out and have to work a low paying job out of their field, which is depressing and may end up making them not work.

Water is a big deal already, that's why corporations like Nestle are getting into the water game.

Well the loans were hidden behind AAA ratings and in the CDO's, so he had to dig through what the banks were calling 'solid bets' to find out if the individual loans were suspect. And they turned out to be suspect. It was basically a very autistic thing to do, and everyone else were too busy and assumed the banks were telling the truth about mortgages.

>Pretty sure the bank is meant to go "from your income and savings there is literally no way you'll be able to pay off this house, no loan for you."

Typically they would because bank doesn't want to lose their money, but a weird amalgamation of pressures caused the opposite to happen. From the government pushing for more loans to homeowners, to a ever increasing house values allowing for refinancing of mortgages to the point where the rising values would pay off the mortgage, to CDOs increasing the demand for more mortgages.

All of this was predicated on the belief that housing prices would continue to rise. The paradox being that if the market realized housing was overvalued then they wouldn't be overvalued. Meaning there wasn't any bad intentions or stupidity. The market isn't small enough for a few thousand people to be responsible for something. It happened because people want to fit in and don't question the status quo, which is why only autists figured it out. Anyone making it out to be greed is just looking for a narrative.

If this film educated you in any way, please do not engage in discussion of financial politics. You are either retarded or you were like 12 years old during the recession. Most of the "revelations" in this movie should be common knowledge to anyone who has read an article or two in literally any business journal from the past several years.

You should talk to other people more you'll be surprised how much they don't actually know

If I remember right he's more big into how water is transported than supplies.

I also liked his perspective on the whole crisis where he basically said it wasn't a simple failure of capitalism and that everyone should have some introspection because they all had a hand in creating this. It's obvious that the banks fucked up majorly and should get shit for it but everyone taking these ridiculous loans should learn from it. You don't just get handed free money in life there's always a catch.
>>

The whole point of the movie and the book it is based on is that people aren't aware of this information, you stupid fucking cunt. Why don't you take your subscription to the fucking WSJ and shove it up your fucking ass. Dipshit twat.

>Based on a 5 year old book
Of course it's not about revelations. The movie never acts like it's privy to some arcane economic knowledge, it's about explaining things in layman's terms. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

The big short is infotainment to educate the masses by pretending to be a movie. The general populace is basically like a preschool. When you watched TV shows in preschool they tried to teach you basic things like number or how to read and disguised that as entertainment.

This is what's going on in the film. In essence Wolf of Wallstreet did less to inform but more entertain the masses -- which doesn't do much but make the audience want to do a bunch of drugs because based leonardo dicap did it off of a hookers ass.

The big short is better because it's actually giving something by informing society, rather than romanticizing what deteriorated our economy.

He's also stated that he wasn't special or overly clever in discovering the growing risk in subprime markets. He faulted federal regulators for only listening to a closed group of advisers, which probably means it was most likely a contrived setup. Plenty of people were giving warnings, but big bank lobbyists had the ears of federal regulators and kept them ignorant to the signs. One wonders if the big banks wanted this to happen and are now stronger for it.

I don't think any one here actually understood the film.

Essentially what the banks did was point a loaded gun at their own heads and say pay us or we'll shoot.

They knew they would be bailed out.
