I get the sense that the indoctrination that the Stormtroopers recieve is based more in fear of repercussions and punishment than camaraderie for fellow Stormtroopers. Who else is more interesting? Rey has some interest in her character that mostly has to do with who her parents could be and why she's such a powerhouse with the force.
Meanwhile Kylo Ren is torn between two different influences of the Force. Luke's original training which would've focused on the suppressing of emotion and calming meditation, contrasting with Snoke's later training which would require Kylo to completely forget everything he's been trained to think for the last decade or so. Adding to that, he's looking up to a man he's never really met and whose ideals he never witnessed.
He's a whiny emotional angry fan boy as a villain, which is actually working as a character in this series.

Why did TR-8R exist? He's a nothing, he's literally a nothing. His existence in the context of the film serves no purpose. I don't know if JJ wanted to show how a lightsaber works, or perhaps felt that stopping the plot to stick a fight in was a good idea. Either way, it just left such a bad taste in my mouth.
It was so odd to, as I already said, stop the plot to showcase a fight with a complete nobody. Shit, if they just added a second trooper it would have felt better than a 1v1.
Why, if they were so dead-set on shoving a fight into our faces, didn't they just make it with Phasma? Her character didn't do jack shit to make her feel like someone who is a threat to our protagonists.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Lightsaber" bullshit that's going on in the Star Wars system right now. Shock Batons deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine First Order Riot Control Stormtrooper's Shock Baton in Imperial Space for 2,400,000 Galactic Credits (that's about $2) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my Shock Baton.
First Order smiths spend years working on a single shock baton and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Shock Batons are thrice as sharp as a Jedi's swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a lightsaber can cut through, a shock baton can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a Shock Baton could easily bisect a Mandalorian wearing full plate Cortosis Weave with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why the Galactic Republic never bothered conquering The First Order? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Stormtroopers and their shock batons of destruction. Even in the Clone Wars, Kaminoan Clone soldiers targeted the men with the shock batons first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Shock batons are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Shock Batons:

19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)

Beloved characters with small roles are usually ruined if made the focus of a new story. A big charm of these characters is how little we know about them. When we learn more and the story has to go through its methods of showing more of the character, most of their charm dies out.
