Everybody knows Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds, and probably fewer people are aware of the cash-in version from The Asylum. But has anyone seen this rather faithful adaption of the book which came out the same month as those two movies?

It's fucking shit, and it has dancing skeletons.

This is a martian. Believe it or not, this image was not taken from the movie and not 1998 War of the Worlds video game.

well besides the shitty visuals is it any good/how faithful to the book?

I must have seen it around the time it came out so I don't remember it in detail, but it's really not good on any level. It's faithful to a fault because it includes a lot of drawn out scenes with nothing happening that only took up a sentence or two in the book (the whole thing is like 3 hours long and so boring it's not even good in a fun "so bad it's good" way).

Pretty much anything that could be bad was. The actors were all awful, a lot of the props and costumes are inappropriate for the time period, that martian is hardly the worst visual, and the tripods sound like cartoon pogo sticks when they walk around. Even the main character's moustache is a bad fake.

Admittedly I do like the designs of the war machines. If they weren't rendered so poorly I'd have a compliment to give. And I usually have a high tolerance for bad visuals but it's hard to be excited by the Thunderchild scene when it looks like this.

The GOAT War of the Worlds is this

And also the radio drama by Orson Welles
>>
>>64046926
That's actually why I made this thread, I was listening to the musical for the first time and it made me remember this movie.
>>
>>64046959

Have you listened to the remake one?

They replaced Burton with Liam Neeson which was alright but then they fucked it by adding dubstep to Thunderchild

Is it this one?

This one was out June 2005, along with the Spielberg and Asylum ones.

Why'd you even watch it OP? Everything they've made is trash that takes place in a submarine for half the movie.

I think you are forgetting about the Great War/War of the Worlds crossover History channel made to mark the 100th anniversary in 2014. They even made use of edited WWI footage.

The one I'm talking about isn't by Asylum. There were 3 War of the Worlds movies that came out the same month. I didn't expect this one to be good either, though, I was just curious if anybody knew about it because I've never seen it mentioned.

I've been a big WotW fan since I was a kid. I was even looking forward to this before it came out. It's fucking atrocious.
>>
>>64047486
Actually the bit in the ruined house was alright. Probably because the guy who plays the writer is actually moderately talented and that bit needs minimal special effects. The guy really sold the sense of despair once he goes to the pantry after the claw leaves and discovers its taken all the food to study.
>>
>>64047366
I wish I still had a copy so I could make some webms. During the first fight where a fighting machine is taken down, one of them grabs a guy and pitches him over the horizon and it looks fucking hilarious. Out of the whole movie that's one of the things that really sticks out in my memory.

And according to some old forum conversation I found, the director was posting obviously fake high reviews for it on various sites.
>>
>>64047638
Hang on I'll see how much of a fuckaround megatools is on my seedbox and I'll give you a copy if it's easy

I'm probably not going to bother. I should go spend my Christmas Eve doing something better than make webms of a shitty adaption maybe 5 people have ever seen.

Okay, Merry Christmas anon!

I can't imagine how awful the disappointment would have been were I actually excited for or even aware of this before it came out.

Is the old '50's War of the Worlds worth checking out? Doesn't look much like the source but is it good in its own right?

And for that matter, how about the TV series?
>>
>>64047296
Doesn't seem particularly good. I read that Timothy Hines also made a "true story" sort of War of the Worlds movie after >>64046311
Is this that?

>>64046959
Why has nobody made a film version of the album? They made two video game adaptations of it.
>>
>>64050452
They'd probably try to update the music in some way that wouldn't work. And, personally, I never cared for the design of the tripods used for it.
>>
>>64046311
the only good adaptation of war of the worlds is the 1980's late night sydication version with adrian paul

Is the book actually good?

Is it a continuation of the movie or does it just reuse the designs.

I'm not going to bother capturing it but almost every background is an unnecessary and poorly done greenscreen, and almost every building that explodes (for the heat ray does not burn, it explodes) is basically the same brown, untextured house.

Notice the tripod's arm phasing out of existence near Big Ben, and the fact that Big Ben is free-standing.

Also, it takes a fucking hour in this movie for the tripods to show up.

What gets me is that throughout the movie, the heat ray is invisible (as it is in the books), only indicated by this weird colorful gas looking effect over the screen. Then out of nowhere some fucking green lightning takes down Big Ben.
>>
The 1953 version is still the best. The visuals were really impressive. Flashy and colorful it can almost blind you. Such a unique style for a 50s sci fi movie. Also scenes where the characters walk through the demolished city are very effective.
>>

It sounds autismal but I really struggle with this scene. A ~1900 line of battle would absolitely BTFO the Martians because 12in rifles are superior in every way to the heat rays.

The greatest love story ever told.

Anyway, these webms are incomplete without audio. I swear they went out of their way to find the shittiest quality stock sounds for this movie. For example, listen to the screams in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6F34I9pHMA
War of the Worlds uses some of the same screams as this game, with the same sound quality.

>>64059249

>>
>>64059061
Have you heard Jeff Waynes war of the world's double album from late 70s early 80s? If you are a war of the world's fan I highly recommend listening to it. The story is everything Spielbergs movie should have been.
>>
>>64059421
I honestly liked Spielberg's movie aside from the screaming kid but it would have been amazing if he did a more direct adaption of the book.
>>
>>64059605
I don't think it was a good idea to set it in present day imo.

>I dunno m8 the heat ray can melt your shit up from miles away
Not really, it's limited to line of sight. And the tripods aren't durable, a light field gun can kill one. A naval shell several times the size with substantially more range would shred one, and this is an age when the Royal Navy alone had dozens of battleships and hundreds of smaller vessels (still armed with guns heavier than any field artillery). The book-level Martians winning was an asspull of epic proportions

You know what this scene needs? A skeleton.
There are skeletons all over this movie. Often they're tangled in red weed (photos of grass or regular flowers tinted red), which appears much earlier than it does in the book and completely at random.
