In The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams completely failed to establish a threat. The First Order turned out to be a massive joke by the end, handled in exactly the same way as the Empire. There was no renewal. No revival. No showcasing how they're a more proficient threat. There were a few cool scenes and then they're just destroyed utterly and blown up in a copy/paste.

Actually that was the point of the Starkiller, to show that the bad guys were a big threat. But it was a pretty lazy way to do it, and having a threatenig weapon but no threatening characters is kinda dull.
Maybe General Hux could have filled that void, instead of just a fanatic he could be a really cold, calculating asshole and be played by a more intimidating actor.

Hux murders Snoke and frames Kylo Ren, who goes off and kills himself.
Poe Dameron assassinates Rey and replaces her with a doppelganger (Alicia Vikander). it's revealed that Poe is actually a sith lord spy, and the doppelganger is a sentient force sensitive A.I
Hux realizes that his spy has gone rogue and starts bleeding intel from his secondary source (Finn).
slowly it's revealed that Hux is trying to create unity for a greater purpose and doesn't really buy the ideology or cruelty of the First Order.
Poe becomes aware that he's compromised as Hux turns into an agent himself, leading Finn to be executed.
things culminate until we have a major battle over the resistance main base of operations, with Poe desperately sabotaging defenses while Hux intends to win the battle but then fire an orbital bombardment at his own groundforces while gathering his sub-commanders to be assassinated en masse by his secret weapon (Rey 2/Vikander, who was actually a plant)
eventually Poe makes his way to Huxs command ship, and confronts him as Rey2 is finishing up.
Both Hux and Poe battle to become the new ruler of the known galaxy, with Rey2 watching and intended to be the unimaginative orderly 2nd in command of the victor; both believe that she is still just their plant.
both mortally wound each other, and Rey2 reveals that she is actually the puppetmaster and has been orchestrating everything. as Hux and Poe die, she explains how both were wrong in their own ways and outlines her view that only a strong grey jedi is truly enlightened; it's revealed that shes actually the pet project of Dooku and Qui-Gon Jinn, left dormant for decades and only failsafe triggered when the chosen one fulfills the second untold prophecy that balanced the force users down to only himself and his offspring.
Rey2 gets picked up by a tie fighter and leaves.

Star Wars TFA was like a dance remix of a classic song. Enjoyable at first but eventually you start getting tired of listening to the recycled hooks and cheesy beats.
The first five minutes were terrible. The next fifteen minutes were decent. It then went downhill steadily until the pointless and underwhelming Death Star 3 run.
I could have bought into the concept of the First Order as being like North Korea, a bunch of diehard old generals with outdated soviet tech and a cobbled-together nuke. But that's not really how they came across in the movie. None of it made sense.
