First Order is basically North Korea they don;t rule the galaxy but they are allowed to exist.

Obviously this is a huge overlook by the Republic and that's why the Resistance exist

North Korea doesn't destroy other countries (worlds)

The Empire was more or less defeated within a few years of the Battle of Endor. A group of the Imperial remnant, led by General Hux's father, retreated to the Outer Rim and eventually rebuilt itself as the First Order. The New Republic was established to govern the galaxy.

30 years later, the First Order is powerful, but they're locked in a Cold War with the Republic, with both too afraid to strike first. The Republic secretly funds the Resistance, who fights the First Order within their own territory, behind enemy lines

that's really all we know. JJ didn't want to focus on boring exposition and politics because that's what the prequels did

Seems like Germany after WW1

they would if they had deathstar or nukes.

Neither did the first Order before they activated their weapon.

And if North Korea could they would.

Yeah, sort of a combination of that and Russia post-Revolution given how they describe a Cold War between the newly formed Republic and the outer territories still controlled by the remaining fragments of the Empire.

Being a good director means knowing between too much and too little. Such a childish kneejerk reaction managed to fuck up the worldbuilding of what sounds like an interesting premise, now that I've seen it explained.

How did disney go from hosting national socialist researchers like von braun to promoting anti-white space operas like sw7?

It's alright, we'll get the bigger picture in the spinoffs
>>
Sssh, don't talk politics - it's why the prequels were no good.
