So...what's the state of the galaxy as of the beginning of TFA?
Is the Republic the dominant power in the galaxy? What is the "Resistance"? Did the Empire die out then re-emerge as the FO? Or did the war against the Empire never end? Is the FO just a bunch of fanatical remnants of the Empire, or do they have considerable power?
They could have explained this in the title crawl, but I guess that would have been too much reading for 2015's audiences.

I like to think of FO as the star wars version of ISIS.
The rebels won the galactic civil war.
After the Emperor was defeated they formed a new government called the New Republic.
Most of the galaxy automatically pledged allegiance to this new government.
Some portions of the galaxy chose to remain under the rule of imperial governors and chose to call themselves the First Order, perhaps to put distance between themselves and the tainted imperial name.
Peace is signed between New Republic and the First Order.
Some elements of the New Republic think that the First Order is up to no good and want to conduct covert operations across the border.
They are called the Resistance.
Turns out the First Order is up to no good and the Resistance was right.
In the next episode I imagine the Resistance will merge with the New Republic forces as full blown war between them and the First Order starts.

New republic is beyond retarded. They literally had the majority of their military stationed in one fucking system and how the fuck did the first order build Starkiller? Where did they get the funds? If the majority of the galaxy supports the new republic then how does the first order get the money to build a weapon like that? The fleet they had was pretty tiny and they seem to be a small faction that wasn't being taken serious until they pulled a super weapon out of their ass.

Basically it looks like everyone gets down with the resistance so the governments and worlds are Republic but the Empires military is like fuck you we run shit and kills off a solar system of important planets to make everyone join the Empire again.
Its kind of like if everyone agreed the US military was evil and got rid of it but instead they are like fuck you we are gonna run shit you aint takin are jerbs and they try to take back over starting with blowing up the main cities like DC, NY, LA, Chi-Town, H-Town.
