I liked the Time War because it was pretty much an inevitability. When you set up so many powerful races with OP technology and weapons and penchants for controlling or destroying everything and give them all time travel AND make them piss each other off until there's a universe-scale rivalry existing throughout most of time... you're gonna end up with a war. And that war, with their available technologies, is going to get out of hand on a universal scale.
I also liked the side of the Doctor that was brought out by the Time War being in his past. I enjoyed 9's PTSD. I liked 10's rose-colored perception of the Time Lords out of guilt and loneliness, along with him dealing with being the last Time Lord in a universe where Time Lords are now forgotten. I just liked seeing then characterization it brought to have that looming over his head.
What I hate about Moffat's handling of the Time War is that he just casually reverses it with zero rhyme or reason.
Remember when 11 is taken to a wartorn Skaro? He asks how it's even possible to go there because it should be time locked. The answer is, "I dunno lol, guess there's no time lock now." It's never actually explained, they just handwave over it.
Then you have the 50th, where the ending of the Time War is completely retconned and Gallifrey is saved, transported to a pocket dimension and frozen in time until the Doctor can figure out how to save them. Oh wait, did I say frozen in time? Because apparently when you're frozen in time in a pocket dimension it's possible to open a tear between dimensions and send regeneration energy through it. Which means they could observe the Doctor, hear him, and had the ability to communicate with him. So why did they never reach out to 9 or 10? Did they just decide he should be allowed to stew in undeserved guilt for a few hundred years for no reason?

Then the cherry on top is Gallifrey returning with no explanation. Last we knew, Gallifrey was stuck in a pocket dimension and locked away. The Doctor didn't yet know how to rescue it, and he stated a couple times they wouldn't be able to come back without help (frozen in time, remember?). Well, guess that was wrong, because here they are! Tucked away at the end of the universe's timeline for safety. When did that happen? Not important. Why didn't they reach out to the Doctor right away? Dunno lol. How did they manage it? Why would we tell you?
Moffat and his team was just extremely lazy about their handling of the Time War. Moffat hated the Time War as an idea, and they wanted to bring back Time Lords. But they had no idea how to bring back Time Lords in a way that made sense, so they just waved their hands and said, "It's reversed! Everything the Doctor went through emotionally in the years following the Time War is meaningless now because we said so. Don't ask how or why it's reversed because we don't actually know, we just wanted it so here it is." And that's not even going into how the hell another Time War won't happen, since Gallifrey and Skaro and Time Lords and Daleks are now back in the universe in full force. "Nah, it won't happen because we said so. Stop questioning."

I'm not sure there's a good way to handle it. Maybe Time Lords didn't really NEED to return anyway, at least not in full. Enough things in RTD's era managed to slip through the time lock that you could have surviving Time Lords appear here and there. Or maybe a group of them could have found a way to escape like the council tried in End of Time and then they set themselves up on a new planet. Gallifrey is lost, but the Time Lords live on, and they don't like that the Doctor tried to genocide everyone on both sides of the war (hence not reaching out to him, but staying hidden and rebuilding until the Doctor finds them). Something like that. It just feels unnecessary to completely undo everything established about the end of the Time War for literally no reason.

Series 9 12 is great, I honestly can't even look at series 8 12 with his short hair and over the top grumpiness without thinking "this guy was the Doctor?" And I loved it at the time, too.
Besides Listen is a fairly light episode where he's concerned, he spends most of it being bubbly and quirky save the 2 seconds where he shouts at Clara. That's like the model for series 9 12 (who still does plenty of shouting).

I hated the 12 in Into the Dalek Robot od Sherwood and The Caretaker. That's the only times I thought they made him OTT grumpy to the point of caricature. The rest of Series 8 I had no problems with and I don't see as vastly different from the way he is now. It's character progression.

11 definitely eased off on the wacky by the end. It wasn't until ToTD that I realized I'd miss him (11 never really rubbed off on me, mainly cause I liked 10 when I was younger. On rewatching all of it recently, I find I like 10 at first, and when he's with Donna, but otherwise he definitely has his moments where he's too angsty, and 11 was pretty good, though the wacky side of things at first was a bit of a pisser for me)

I don't want a new companion. I want S10 to be a mix of the Doctor facing something alone or having a companion only for 1 or 2 episodes before moving on. It'll be a nice change of pace after having companions on for years and making them the center of the universe. Just give us some fun companions as side characters. Maybe one of them from earlier in the season finds their way back to the Doctor and he sees that as making them worthy of keeping on a while longer and they become the S11 companion.

the fact is the 12th doctor is a hugely inconsistent character, and his personality is always fluctuating between 'grumpy socially awkward autist' and 'memey hipster'.
S8 and S9 may as well just be 2 completely different Doctors.
