>>
>>63474931
I really wanted there to be a dalek on the trap street who was sorta the stereotypical kinda-racist pub owner but otherwise a decent enough guy. Because I've always wanted a story where there's a Dalek who doesn't have all the Dalek views and beliefs, but still has the stereotypical Dalek attitude. The world's worst angry boss, basically.

You guys are retards. You'd think he'd go and tell a complete stranger that he forgot a woman but can remember what they did together? Like it happens to anyone all the time? No. He knew. He faked it all along. He still remembers her. He never forgot her.

The 4.5 billion's just time travel.

Given the huge drop in age that took place between the classic and new series, the two most likely options are that either the Doctor changed what standard of year he was using to measure his age (Gallifreyan to Earth or vice versa) or else he started counting again at 0 with his regeneration from 8 into the War Doctor. If it's the first, he's around 2000+ years (what kind of years, we don't know) old, probably give or take 200-300 years. If it's the second, he's closer to 5000 years old, plus or minus whatever went on in the time war, and depending on how much of the 8th doctor you consider canon.
>>
>>63475226
A more fitting finale would have been the Doctor turning Clara into an Ood by force feeding her Ood particles. The Time Lords would have never found her that way. Also, Clara would have made a really cute Ood.
>>
Everyone hates that the episode was just about saving Clara and not Gallifrey which was hand waved.

What happens now? He knows where it is so why won't he go find his children? Also, is he back to his Deep Breath self after the memory wipe, retconning two years of character development?

So I'm writing this script and I had to resort to a Weeping Angel like a faggot. How can I use something else? Like the bad guy has information but the Angel already has his hands around the guy's neck and if the Doctor blinks/looks away the guy dies and the information dies with him. So basically he's letting him be alive for a few more seconds.

Can I get around that? Or is using an Angel fine?

Since I've given up hope of Moffat writing good story arcs, even though he seems intent on doing it... Good episodes. Just good episodes. I hope Moffat writes one or two great episodes. I hope the other writers are great too.
Just some good Doctor Who stories.
>>
>>63477097
I'm definitely musically stunted, but you know what I mean. Post-production digitally altered reverb. It made a good theme shit. Imagine the same scenes with the original music. Instead of making it drab and cynical and sneering, make it cathartic and emotional and add a tinge of wonder to the whole proceedings. The Doctor's back on Gallifrey and it's treated as something banal or routine. "One so loves fireworks". Yeah, one does, where were they?

Sorry, bit of a tangent. Do you remember the first time we saw Gallifrey again after decades in the Sound of Drums? The camera sweeping over the alien mountains, the Citadel in all its majesty. There was something mythic about it. Now it's just... I don't know.

I understand why - the Time Lords are hated, etc, but I feel like they've sacrificed any sense of the Time Lords power and magnificence to wank over Moffat's self-insert grumpy Scotstor Who. But then, ninety percent of Moffat's episodes involve somebody solliloquising lustfully about how great his man-baby Doctor. The Doctor used to be properly flawed. As easily provoked to vengeance and mercy. Now Moffat's flipped it round so he's Captain Neverlose.
>>
>>63474978
Like Strax?
>>
>>63477122
I think at the very start, when he's in the barn and the Gallifreyan washerwoman comes in. I assume it's a washerwoman. What the fuck is up with that shitty barn anyway? Where was the Doctor's mother when he was a kid? Why was he banished to live in a pleb shack in a desert? Fucking shit idea. It even says in the episode he's a high-born Gallifreyan. Why's he been sent to a boarding shed instead of a boarding school?

Although I'll say one thing, I'm kinda ok with half-human doctor being the reason he's always visiting earth.

It ended with two not-timelord immortal womyn going on their own adventure in their own Tardis, and also featured a transgender, transrace timelord who makes a oh-so-hilarious jab at men when she regenerates.

It's incredibly progressive, and if you disagree, you're just a bigot who doesn't understand that its 2015 and your opinions are medieval.
>>
>>63477314
I don't know, why are you so petty that you actually give a shit about whatever inane things teenage girls do?
>>
>>63477314
idk mate. I liked it but I'm not sure if it's good yet. It did some good stuff with Time Lord science and some good character work on Clara. I like that all Time Lord technology is abstract and immense in scope and vision. Beyond human ken, essentially. Really sells the idea of the Time Lords as ancient masters of time and space. And it was good to see Clara defend her life and her choices from the Doctor's meddling - she might have fucked up, but she did it on her own terms, and as the Doctor's equal. I thought the Time Lord story was a let-down, Rassilon's cameo was a waste of time, and most of the suspense that was built up in Heaven Sent turned out to be nothing, as per usual. Too many plot threads discarded after hyping them up.
>>
>>63477314

Since because of them these episodes can continue to be made.
>>
>>63477395
See, I'd argue that the trans-gender-race Time Lord General's line actually undermines what was sort of a progressive moment, but not really, since it was only a minor side-character being used to showcase the show's tumblr credentials.

All Moffat's women are written as feminatrix nannies that view all men as boys or man-children and constantly scold or upbraid them in the midst of berating and flirting with them, which just re-inforces the pretty out-dated idea about men and women being fundamentally different in personality, purely as a result of biology. Which I always thought was fucking stupid.
>>
>>63477435
Exactly.
And they don't even see it as mindless pandering, to them it's "normal".
>>
>>63477395
>transrace timelord who makes a oh-so-hilarious jab at men when she regenerates.
I found that part to be extremely problematic, all the evidence is that men and women are essentially exactly the same so having a character say a line like this just promotes ingrained stereotypes holding back the progress of all genders.
>>
>>63477477
This.
I wouldn't have had a problem with the male to female regeneration if they hadn't put in that god awful line about men and their ego's. It's like, you don't want to be sexist against females but it's okay towards males.
The same thing could be said about Missy and her comment about the female gender being an upgrade.

>>

>>

>>
>>63477219

Bad Wolf cue as a whistle was cool imho. Murray Gold did a good job with music in the series finale (especially in Heaven Sent). Mythologising about Gallifrey only works when it's not there, if you do it when it is then you end up with it being boring. The point of 'one does so love fireworks' is that there are no celebrations now that the Doctor's returned. There's never any celebrations when the Doctor's back on Gallifrey, because the Doctor hates it and the main cadre of Time Lords don't like the complications that he brings. You only have to watch The War Games, The Deadly Assassin, The Invasion of Time, Arc of Infinity, The Five Doctors, Trial of a Time Lord etc. to know that the Doctor's return to Gallifrey would never warrant celebration. The way he reminisces about it in The Sound of Drums has a deeper purpose than 'muh beautiful planet' - he's establishing the depth of the relationship he has with the Master, and also how intrinsically linked that relationship is with his survivor's guilt and guilt over what he thinks he did. It was a reintroduction of the Doctor's home planet and another member of his people to 21st century kids, the same way when the Time Lords were introduced in the 60s they were Olympian gods, but if they'd continued like that it would've been shit. Runcible the Fatuous a GOAT.

The entire overarching plot of this show is basically the Doctor's passive rejection of Gallifrey and what Gallifrey stands for (ie the complete control of time and space while wearing the facade of being hermetic non-interventionalists). As Camus says 'The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.' That's the Doctor. And the way he basically enacted a coup d'etat in Hell Bent just to irrationally rescue his long-dead friend and fly away in a stolen time machine - making summer last forever - is just another rejection of the Time Lord way.

Why Moffat would bend over backwards to service a tiny fraction of the fanbase that doesn't even like him is beyond me, but you all believe it for some reason.
>>
>>63477675
I don't think so but thanks for letting me know. I would never have guessed there were people here who feel this way. Maybe they should post about it more often.
>>
>>63477477
For the most part though, men and women are different, generally speaking. The line was stupid and to me it did undermine any progressiveness that the "transgendered timelord" offered. I think you're probably dead on about the moffat stuff, they all seem to have a similar vein.
>>63477535
Does anyone really think being a female would be an upgrade? It sounds awful to me. Subtract all of the implied or imposed barriers, restrictions, or perceived patriarchal nonsense, and make them completely equal, they still bleed and bloat a few days out of the month, nearly every month, sounds awful to me senpaitachi.
>>
>>63477699
Yeah, I get ya.

I like to climb mountains. I prepare for and think about the ascent for weeks. Then, when I'm on the trail, it's arduous; hard work. Then, when we've reached the summit, there's a nice few minutes of euphoria.

But you know what? After the heart rate settles, and you've taken in the sights, one accepts that he's on top of a pile of rocks and that's all there is. The minute to minute of being on top of the thing.

And that's all going back to Gallifrey was for the Doctor.

What did you expect? Choirs of angels singing hosanna? Fireworks and a parade?

The Journey is always more important, and is why Heaven Sent plays so much stronger, because it's about the Hero's Travails, not his arrival home that thrills.

Come on, people.
>>
>>63477746
I mean, I bet some hardcore radfems would think being female as an upgrade. Or anyone on Tumblr.

Mostly because I imagine the opposite and how much butthurt that would create.

Women love to say shit like that so it made sense to me. Even if time lords should be different given it is a complete society where people regenerate regularly.

I was thinking they meant "the Doctor's back so things are going to be explosive" with the "fireworks" line, I wasn't expecting jubilation (which he actually got in the episode, since everyone but Rassilon hailed him as a war hero) but yeah that's one way of reading it.

I don't agree that he's rejecting the Time Lord way in meddling with the continuum for his own personal gain. Isn't the point of the episode that he's "gone too far?" And as you say, aren't the Time Lords essentially trying to establish a monopoly over time and space? If anything, he'd become akin to the Time Lord victorious - which was what made the Time Lords during the Time War so terrifying. And I know from past experience that the depiction of Gallifrey prior to SoD was far from glowing, and more about the murkiness of Gallifreyan political intrigue.

Regardless, my point was rather that the story itself never treats his return to Gallifrey as exceptional or cause for the audience's celebration - something that was explicitly set up as a triumphant return for the character anyway in Day of the Doctor, the home he could once again return to - and is instead just sort of dismissed as a necessary inconvenience on the way to saving the Clala.

I think you have a point about Gallifrey being linked to the depth of his relationship with the Master, but the way RTD wrote it, it was the "Shining Star of the Seven Systems", like Rome in all its glory at the height of the empire, a place of light and colour and sound. What we got was a drab detour into some backwater peasant village and then a less than exhilirating return to the capital for some tedious exposition.

I just miss the RTD way of looking at the universe, which had some sense of the wonderful and the strange, as opposed to the Moffat view of the universe, which is only interesting in as much as it can be reduced to novelty gimmick villains
>>
>>63477871
Wouldn't happen - i guarantee once the doctor becomes a female he will stay that way for at least 5 or 6 regenerations.

Let's hope it never happens, because that will be the day i'm done with the show.
>>
>>63477808
I for one wouldn't, but I think a lot of people would just for the sake of being female.

>>63477825
Yeah, imagine how people would have reacted if a woman regenerated into a man and said something sarcastic about the female gender.
Everyone would be a shitlord.

>Even if time lords should be different given it is a complete society where people regenerate regularly.
Yes!
I think they should have written male to female regenerations and vice versa as something that regularly happens and nobody cares if it does.
You'd think that if someone can regenerate into a new gender they would be used to it, essentially having a society where nobody cares if you're male or female, because the next day, you might be the opposite gender.

This.

That's why I actually liked those bits of Hell Bent. I liked everything up until the conversation with Me/Ashildr, and then things started to dip. Though the lines "'Because we know summer can't last forever' 'Of course it can. Of course it can. You just have to steal a time machine.'" were fuckin great.

It's the events of Face the Raven/Heaven Sent that make the Doctor seem so vengeful. In actual fact, his grumpy vengeful attitude is a facade so that he can gain power over Gallifrey and the extraction chamber and steal another TARDIS to 'rescue' his companion. The point of the finale was that the hybrid is not really a prediction made by the Cloister Wraiths to the Doctor about a superweapon or a mythical warrior, but a personal prediction about the Doctor's inability to accept defeat and to accept that all things must come to an end, everything has its time and everything dies. Plus, Gallifrey will appear again and I kind of like the fact that Moffat didn't completely exhaust Gallifrey and left the future of the planet open for picking back up later. I mean, Rassilon the Resurrected just went off in a shuttle, doesn't mean he can't come back. The General's regeneration doesn't bother me at all except for the line about 'all that ego' but you can just put that down to the General being biased or a little post-regeneratively confused or something. The dumb parts of the episode all occurred around Me. Maisie's shit acting, the fact the Mire technology still works for like 100 trillion years, the fact she's Clara's companion but she's lived for the majority of the history of the universe, or the fact she even comprehends normal conversation and experiences the passing of time the same way etc. Also where did she get 21st century clothes and make-up. And the diner TARDIS ending was a bit of an omnishambles, but whatever.

Nah. Try not to get triggered by reality mate, it's gonna make your life more hard work than it needs to be. SJW's didn't ruin your show, your fucked up priorities and Moffat's inability to write more than two characters did.

On a related note, is there any difference any more between Moffat Sherlock and the Doctor?
They've got a mind palace and a mind tardis in common, they both need a companion to negate their autism and relate to human beings, and both of their companions alternate between hero-worshipping fanboy/girlism and scolding them for not being more Sherlocky or Doctory. "Wear your doctor coat/ Sherlock hat, you're the Doctor/ the Sherlock for fuck's sake."

Obviously there's dozens of other points of comparison (eccentric aloof genius with astounding mental capacity but limited emotional capacity who get flustered around women and both have musical instruments etc etc) but the points of over-lap are starting to become egregious.

Will Doctor Oho kill himself in front of his husband 'cause of Clara's return?

>Regardless, my point was rather that the story itself never treats his return to Gallifrey as exceptional or cause for the audience's celebration...and is instead just sort of dismissed as a necessary inconvenience on the way to saving the Clala.

I do see where you're coming from, but the point is that when the Doctor returns the Time Lords have so thoroughly screwed him over and treated him so badly (killing his friend, torturing him) that he has no reason to enjoy his return. Instead, he's reminded why he left Gallifrey in the first place - they're fuckin' assholes! So for the first 15 minutes he silently formulates a plan to go back to Doctorin' the TARDIS. Steal another time capsule, use the extraction chamber to rescue his companion, go off an invent a flying submarine. He's done with Gallifrey as soon as he gets there, and wouldn't you be too? He's reminded about all the shit times he's had there.

>I don't agree that he's rejecting the Time Lord way in meddling with the continuum for his own personal gain.

No, I didn't mean like that. The Time Lords, when they gained control of the Eye of Harmony and the Web of Time, basically gained, as you say, monopoly and hegemony over the continuum. The Doctor doesn't want to control the universe, he wants to use this remarkable device of time travel to just go around and see loads of cool shit and hang out with incredible people and pick up great friends and have adventures. What do you say to lunch, followed by breakfast? Because we're time travellers and that's how we roll. Then cocktails with Moses. Then I'm going to invent a flying submarine. Why? Because no one ever has and it's annoying.
The Doctor doesn't have an M.O. to fix every problem and meddle around and save lives, he just does. It's a byproduct of what he does. He has adventures, and he's such a decent bloke that he usually ends up saving people using his intelligence and will.
>>
>>63478275
So instead of doing it to pander to a small part of fandom he's doing to annoy an even smaller one?
Wow, that Moffat sure is devilish.

Series 1 is actually great. The only parts that are genuinely worth complaining about are the bin scene and plastic Mickey in episode 1, and the farting Slitheen. It's literally just the farting. The fact they all have to pose as fat people is a nice touch and scary for kids, the aliens looks suitably Doctor Who (ie a bit rubbish but also sort of unnerving) and the way the aliens were characterised was more interesting than most. The Aliens of London double parter was very good if you ignore the farting, just like how Rose was good if you ignored the stretchy bin (which did scare me shitless when I was like 10 - imagine if a wheelie bin did eat you) and PUH-PUH-PIZZA. The rest of the series is great, and it has one of the few actually good series finales. Even The Long Game feels like one of the fun VNAs.

I get you man, but the Doctor doesn't need to enjoy something for the audience to like it. I was super pumped to see the Master back in Sound of Drums, and the Daleks and the Cybermen before that. Each was objectively terrible for the Doctor but great for me the viewer, where as the Time Lords showing up was mainly a cause of irritation and exasperation in the Doctor, and boredom from me.

Seeing the Dalek fleet at the end of Bad Wolf was a moment of horror and ecstasy. Watching the Master revealed in Utopia was a masochistic joy - it was exciting. Seeing the Time Lords come back was just sort of lifeless and dull.

The funny thing is, I totally get your second point and whole-heartedly agree with it, I just feel like the show's lost it's way. The Doctor doesn't really seem to have a good time anymore. He talks about loving being a rogue time traveller and summer never being over, but can you think of one time this series he had unadulterated fun? Just really enjoyed the mystery or the adventure? Just barely in Before the Flood, I think. Everything else was just a crushing burden - and I'm saying this as someone who thought season 9 was smart and clever and generally good television. It just wasn't necessarily enjoyable television anymore. Same with season 8 - he's mainly just pissed off, fed-up or frantic with the Mummy, the Boneless, the Listen things.

9 had "Absolutely fantastic!", 10 had "Brilliant!" and "You're beautiful, you are, you're absolutely gorgeous" whenever he ran into some new species or piece of tech; the Doctor plays the guitar on a tank this series, but only because he's running away from his destiny, and also his viking bestie is a robot dalek slave. We don't go to strange or interesting or exotic locales anymore, or if we do, it's never something to celebrate.

I'm probably being slightly unfair, though, but I do think it's missing that joy de vivre of RTD NuWho, and some of Smith's run.

The first 5 episodes in the series are all mediocre to aggressively bad. Dalek is pretty great, I personally think the Long Game was too much of a stretch out for not that great a reveal. Father's day was fairly good. Empty Child/Doctor Dances were GOAT, Boom Town good and Bad Wolf/Parting of the ways very good, one of the best finales we've had. But still, half the series was forgettable to bad and the writing has improved so much as a whole since then. It's definitely a mid to low tier series as a whole.

>>
>>63475432
And what about the skull?First Doc didn't see the skulls.
>>
>>63478318
A lot of it has to do with style and atmosphere, imo.

In The War Games, what we of their power (that scene where they slow down time and the one where they delete the War Lords from existence) seems so awesome, the Doctor and even the ruthless War Chief are so afraid of them, and what little we see of their planet is so strange and shrouded in fog, that you can actually believe that you just got a glimpse of the most powerful and ancient civilization in the universe, even though in the end it's just three gits in robes.

In The End of Time, you have the voice of a mysterious omniscient narrator guiding you through the first episode, while the Doctor worries over a prophecy about "it" returning. When Gallifrey is finally revealed, as the camera leaves Earth and flies away, across the planets and galaxies, its return is described as "the day that the whole of creation would change forever". There is a scene where Wilf keeps offering the Doctor a gun and he keeps refusing it, but as soon as he learns that it's the Time Lords he grabs it and runs headlong into danger, mentioning all the horrors of the Time War. All it takes is literally a flick of a hand for them to stop the Master's plan, and their plan is becoming literal gods.
This time it's a dozen gits in robes instead of just three, but the occasion still feels momentous.

Hell Bent, on the other hand, goes the Trial of a Time Lord way and just treats them like a few gits in robes. Rassilon is a fool with an overinflated opinion of himself, all the power they have is in their guns and a few other other technological trinkets, and they are never treated with reverence or fear by the Doctor, much less by the script.

That's why I was disappointed.

I got the feeling 12 had fun. I think he has fun all the time, he's just a lot more snarky. The Doctor's never a cynic, no matter what edgy teenagers want. The Doctor is always the biggest optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams, etc. etc.

I totally expected their reaction to be this, I had advance warning through DWTV's review that Gallifrey would take a backseat and instantly thought of their inevitable butthurt specifically

He says the Whovians kept censoring speeches he was making (probably just editing down for time) and he took it personally and now he thinks they can't cope with him. They had done this one other time when he changed his opinion on Sleep No More, and he was'nt on the 'cast for the following week as a result.

>Crimeon 'orror
Such a based episode. Proof that Gatiss has it in him. Why can't his other episodes have the same quality? Madame Fetus Tit was the best villain in awhile and the actual aesthetic was some of the more terrifying the show has had.

So when does the second stop being a subversion of racism and start just being racist?

Their competition isn't exactly stellar

How long is a piece of string?

But specifically, in that case it depends on your definition of racist. Once the context of social power structures is considered, we can say that once no trace remains of hegemonic white power structures within Western society (you can maybe shift the focus to the UK solely, but DW is made with international audiences in mind, it's a big seller for the Beeb) then *neither* instance will be "racist" - both cases will simply be someone who is maybe faceblind or something?

Bear in mind, I wasn't saying the first instance was in fact "racist" per se, just that it was a depiction of racism - that's an important distinction. So in that sense, the first will always at least potentially be a depiction of racist sentiment (eg imagine the line spoken by a London cabbie in a period piece set in 1968 - that could be made in 2150 and probably still be a depiction of racism).

Oh, no, he can definitely be a cynic. "I can't be the Doctor all the time" would be one line tending in this direction, but more than that, I think the Mummy on the Orient Express demonstrates this perfectly. He lies and manipulates people for the greater good. Those are the actions of a cynic - the end justifies the means. Say perhaps he's more of a frustrated idealist or romantic.

Not just that, but the majority of 12's tenure has been about demythologising the Doctor. Just an "idiot, helping out". I'd say you have to have some kind of scepticism or cynicism to be able to recognise that. Even going so far back as Eccleston in NuWHO, sometimes humans are just "stupid apes" or "pudding brains".

>RIVER: “My diary. One should always have something sensational to read on a spaceship.”
>THE DOCTOR: “Is it sad?”
>RIVER: “Why would a diary be sad?”
>THE DOCTOR: “I don’t know. But you look sad.”
>RIVER: “It’s nearly full.”
>THE DOCTOR: “So?”
>RIVER: “The man who gave me this, he was the sort of man who’d know exactly how long a diary you were going to need.”
>THE DOCTOR: “He sounds awful.”

Hold me /who/, I'm gonna cry (+ that shade at Eleven) ;_;
