If Light had just ignored L there would've been 0% chance of him getting caught. L would have nothing to go on at all and have to basically pick a single person out of the entire world population at random. Why the fuck did Kira think that purposefully exposing himself over and over in order to get close to some random detective who he wanted to kill for no reason was a good idea? Why even give a flying fuck about L? How many other 'famous detectives' were trying to catch him at that time? He was able to kill people from any distance without any interaction just by knowing their name and their face.

No, the price for that is to never be able to take credit for the kills. He WANTS recognition. It isn't good enough that he kills bad guys, he wants everyone to know he did it.
