The Kings Demons edition. Kamelions first appearance, and his only for a little while. What are /who/s thoughts on Kamelion, and the serial as a whole?
>>
>>72038491
As much as Ainley's Master was kind of shit, there is one way in which he feels like an equal to the Doctor that Delgado's master didn't: he has offscreen adventures that are as harrowing as the Doctor's, but the Doctor and the audience don't get to see. The story of how the Master met Kamelion, formed an alliance with him and escaped Xeriphas sounds like one that could easily be worthy of being broadcast in its own right. Perhaps more worthy than The King's Demons.

PS that "we sing in praise of total war" song is my jam.

PPS I legitimately miss cats.

Just finished listening to the Tenth Doctor Adventures. Already posted my Technophobia review a while ago so here's the others.

Time Reaver was good, presented some interesting ideas like a kind of black marketesque planet, plus the gun was an interesting idea, as well as the reasons that race made it. Was kinda hoping the cool mechanic guy would be Drax, but oh well.

Overall, 9/10, my favourite of the 3

And now for Death and the Queen

I can see why /who/ likes it as it wasn't bad, but I'd say it's probably my least favourite of the 3. Death had a cool voice and the race that uses perception filters to hide people for a price is an interesting idea, but overall something about the pacing felt wrong, especially at the start. It wasn't too bad though, better than some of his TV episodes

Gary Russell once said that during his tenure as Doctor Who Magazine editor Ainley demanded unreasonably huge fees if they wanted to print photos of him because years earlier Russell criticized his hammy acting in Mark of the Rani, and because of that Ainley still had a grudge on him.
A real shame he died so young, he sounds eccentric as fuck

Main Range anon here, finished listening to Fires of Vulcan, another historical.

Really enjoyed this story, provided some commentary on time travel possibilities although it wasn't anything too revolutionary. Their strategy for getting out I predicted at the start, but likewise I did enjoy the story overall, and it had some nice cliffhangers. What are /who/s thoughts?

Next up is The Shadow of the Scourge. Pretty hype for this, with 7, Benny and VNAce. Will it live up to expectations?
>>
>>72046385
Why do you keep talking about having looked into /who/'s heart? Are you referring to something in particular or it just some vaguely Doctor Who-ish phrase you're using?
>>
>>72045750
No. It was something that shouldn't have been in the story at all.
The whole fakeout regeneration/human Ten plotline was by far the worst part of Stolen Earth/Journey's End.
>>
>>72046645
It helped solidify 10 as the cancer of the who universe.

So I'm a time travel autist that can't get into doctor who.

They change their time travel rules every other episode I swear. The classic series was better at keeping rules apart from a few big exceptions, but the new series just hurts me. Why isn't it consistent? Am I really just that spergy to want them to stick with some base laws?

You aren't, but they won't do it anyway. You might be better off leaving the show if you can't stand it.
Even the classic series was inconsistent, for the first two seasons the Doctor kept saying that it was impossible to change established history, then suddenly in The Time Meddler it could be done.

>Has a red Dalek ever appeared in the TV show aside from The Stolen Earth/Journey's End?
a bit late, but no, not in the classic series. However, there was a Red Dalek in the two Cushing movies, I think it was the Second-in-Command in those. Terry Nation also had a red dalek prop in his private collection which he used for promotions and such like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvxpF_3Lf-c
the old comics had Daleks in all kinds of colors, including quite a few red ones. John Peel had this idea that there was a hierarchy in Dalek-society based on color, I think red ones were somewhere in the upper middle. He incorporated that concept in all of his Dalek-stories, including his novelisations.

I dunno, i kind of like the variety. For example, the Reapers in Father's Day were really cool and worked really well with the story but I wouldn't want them to show up every time there's a paradox-story. Know what I mean?
>>
>>72047007
At the end of the day, time travel bullshit is just a set of justifications to do different kinds of stories. Going "if you change the past then pterodactyls will appear and eat you" might be fun for one story, but it can't seriously hold up beyond that, and it cuts off too much potential, which is why they later threw that idea out so they could do time-screwing stories.
The overarching excuse for it all is the fluctuating nature of the universe.
>>
>>72047007
What did do time travel right?

Primer is the only thing I can think of that was properly consistent with causality, and that was pretty much a headache

His original serial is a dull, dire, piece of filler mess where he challenges the Doctor to boring as shit games.

Solitaire is an excellent reinterpretation of his concept where the idea of a 'cosmic game player' is actually shaped into a compelling villain, and he poses an actual threat in a very clever story. In other words, it's the toymaker done right.

There's that unproduced story/novelisation with 6 but nobody cares about that, and he's also sort-of the antagonist in a later McCoy audio which is quite good but not because of him.

the whole point of Kamelion the character was to show off this amazing new prop and recapture a bit of the K9-fame. The bigger question is, why did they make the character a shape-shifter considering that would heavily limit the prop's screentime? And why did Kamelion still join the tardis at the end of the episodes if they already knew that the prop is trash? And why did they give the character a departure story after not mentioning him for a whole year instead of just quietly forgetting about him?
there were so many weird decisions in the jnt-era from a production point of view

>>72053417
We've got one more season of Moffat before the guy who wrote Broadchurch takes over. No word yet on whether Capaldi will be staying or going after season 10.
>>
I've never understood the obsession with colourising old TV shows and movies. Colourisation after the fact ALWAYS looks sub-par, and really old Doctor Who benefits from being in black and white anyway because it tells your brain "this is fiction" and you are more forgiving of some of the dodgy lighting, sets and effects

Colourising something like Invasion of the Dinosaurs makes sense because it was actually shot in colour, and the intention is to show the episode exactly as it would have been when televised
>>
>>72053417
>I really want to see capaldi's doctor written by another writer
Like 8 episodes a season are written by someone who isn't Steven Moffat

He's a three dimensional character, not sympathetic but he feels like a human being.

Sheard had a lengthy affiliation with science fiction, and appeared in six televised stories of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, appearing with the First Doctor in The Ark (1966), the Third Doctor in The Mind of Evil (1971), the Fourth Doctor in both Pyramids of Mars (1975) (later recording a DVD commentary) and The Invisible Enemy (1977), the Fifth Doctor in Castrovalva (1982) and the Seventh Doctor in Remembrance of the Daleks (1988). He also worked with the Eighth Doctor in The Stones of Venice, a Doctor Who audio drama produced by Big Finish Productions. He was a regular guest at both Doctor Who and Star Wars conventions over the years in the UK and the U.S.

I actually agree with everything else you said, but good colourisation can be very convincing, although admittedly it's much harder to colourise a video well than it is to colourise a photo.

You realise you only think this is a 'bad fanfic idea' because it's daring to poke a sacred cow? There's probably a brilliant story somewhere in the ether about the Doctor running into one of his classic enemies in their youth.

Fortunately for you Moffat didn't even attempt to write that story. The Doctor's meeting with young Davros was incredibly short and superficial (enough that it didn't make the obvious mistake of significantly retconning/etc. Davros' past to become about the Doctor).
>>
>>72051419
The TARDIS turns evil

Babelcolour's stuff is pretty good for an amateur, but things like skin tones and for some reason the TARDIS wallpaper never look quite right. That one shot of the Daleks looks absolutely amazing though. I guess with no reference for what the colours actually would have looked like it is incredibly hard to do this stuff.

>>72055487
I love how Davros kept the sonic for all those years yet we never saw it in any of Davros' other appearances, especially in Genesis when the Doctor's sonic is confiscated. And how it was revealed he just had his eyes closed the whole time. Moffat is definitely not a talentless hack who enjoys shitting over the show's deep lore.
The Series 9 opener was definitely not an incoherent mess of fan service. It made sense to have Missy there.

>The Christmas Invasion, 2005, by Russel T. Davies
DOCTOR: Rose, it's me. Honestly, it's me. I was dying. To save my own life I changed my body. Every single cell, but... it's still me.
DOCTOR: I'm him. I'm literally him. Same man, new face.

>Last of the Time Lords, 2007, by Russel T. Davies
DOCTOR: You're not dying. Don't be stupid. It's only a bullet. Just regenerate.

>The End of Time, Part 1, 2009, by Russel T. Davies
DOCTOR: Even then, even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead.

>The Christmas Invasion
Dying. Not dead. If he didn't regenerate, he would've died.

>Last of the Time Lords
He was referring to the fact that a bullet is almost comparable to a grazed knee, the same way you might say to a child "you're not dying, it's just a cut, just get a plaster"

>End of Time
Metaphorically, not literally. He even says it.
>Everything I am dies.
>Feels like dying.
>>
>>72055973
It's not inconceivable that he would have put the sonic away somewhere and completely forgotten about it, not remembering it until he realised just how important it was. And if it was incredibly tiresome or painful for him to have his eyes open why would he not keep them shut? And how does Missy being there not make sense? The adventure just happened to coincide with Missy looking for the Doctor

>>
>>72056111
Fivey had his brain scanned for a new cyberman template since he had an extra lobe that prevented the human body from rejecting the conversion and they say it outright in the story
>>
>>72056313
he was lying to get into Rose's pants. I thought that was obvious.
>>
>>72056432
Okay but are you going to address the actual point of the post, which is that 10's attitude to regeneration is dramatically different in The End of Time?
>>
>>72056313
regeneration is all over the place In this show. Sometimes it's described as the equivalent of dying and just having a copy you put in a new body, like how the real River is dead and the one in the computer is a copy, while other times it's like the flu
>>
>>72056600

>>
>>72056432
>>72056600

>>
>>72056600
It's because 10 is riddled with vanity and he cares more about himself than anyone around him. What we saw in the end of time was him throwing a strop
>>
>>72056432
It's not just RTD, Moffat also is a bit mess. When 11 was about to regenerate he showed obvious pain at the thought of regenerating which shows that regeneration is a bit more then just changing faces but then in series 9 12 just shoots a man and had no problem with it.
>>
>>72056714
>It's because 10 is riddled with vanity
It was funny when Moffat shat on 10 for being vain and selfish in TOTD.
>>
>>72056919
>he showed obvious pain at the thought of regenerating which shows that regeneration is a bit more then just changing faces

When? He was happy that he got another chance at living again.

>12 just shoots a man and had no problem with it.
He would do anything to get Clara back that was the point of the whole episode
>>
>>72056919
>but then in series 9 12 just shoots a man and had no problem with it.

The whole point of that scene is that 12 is behaving more ruthlessly than usual.
>>
>>72057028
I should have used discomfort instead of pain but
>it all just disappears, doesn't it? gone in a moment like breath on a mirror
>>
Matt's regen speech was so weird. He just kept going on and on, I am convinced he had a few too many on set and just let it all out. That is not 11 talking it's Matt.
>>
>>72057414
11 'died' happy and looking to the future, unlike 10. His speech was just about how change is good and a normal part of life. When he was an old man he accepted that he was on his last regeneration and going to die, and had reached a point of defeatism.
After he got the new cycle, his defeatism changed into optimism . He realised that he had done his bit, and it was time to move on, and even though he was going to change, he would still look back on his past lives with admiration.

It's drastically different to the way regeneration is described by 10, who just whinges that he wants to be 10 forever. At least 11 realised that change is a healthy part of life and accepted it
>>

Yeah, Marc Platt is obsessed with making the Doctor the progenitor of races. He also makes him the founder of the Time Lords in Lungbarrow. Similarly, he's the one who gave the Brigadier a daughter and grandson, and also gave the Doctor a great-grandson.

It will be Moffat's final story, and I predict it will be a weeping angel story. The nanogenes will also return to heal 12 after he is killed gruesomely by a weeping angel. But at the end of the story, it will be revealed that the nanogenes can't heal him completely, so he'll have to regenerate. He'll be angry about it, but will accept it.

Davros' "Compassion will kill you in the end" prophecy will be something stupid like the Angel that kills him will be called Compassion. There will also be another angel called Lovely, and a comedy one called Stoney Woney.

Guarantee something like this will happen.

In fact, phucking screenshot this and bring it up in 2017. I want to see if i'm right.

Either that or a Mondas story.

Thanks. It was a bit weird though, the occult stuff in Who always is. The plot is either a bit convoluted or parts of the script aren't particularly clear, but overall I did enjoy it, and some bits were very good.

I understand where people are coming from when they say "the Tom Baker comedy half-hour", though, and I understand why some people don't like that. Most of the jokes were very funny so that get a pass, but The Doctor talking to some cows is a bit bizarre, and the Doctor offering the skull a liquorice allsort was a bit grating. I can only imagine things get worse from this point on.

Also I'm not a huge Leela fan, she's fine but after Jo and Sarah anything would be a step down.

I've seen a few complaints along similar lines.

Don't know what type of TV you have, but it's worth checking the sound settings. We have ours set to 'speech mode'.Can still hear the music, but it doesn't drown out what the actors are saying.
>>
>>72064973
>>72064793
I sometimes have issues hearing what's going on and have to read the transcript, but I do have unilateral hearing loss which makes it hard to distinguish human speech from background noise. My mum used to have to pause and rewind with Sky+ to replay a line she misheard/didn't hear, which was a bit annoying.

Also a lot of normies seem to have really bad sound on their TVs, often with only one side of the stereo image being emitted. I don't understand how so many people can do this, though, and never notice. Same with the motion interpolation/blur removal thing that makes everything look too smooth/fast.
