>Working on a tribute to Seven Samurai ala The Magnificent Seven
>Set in Afghanistan
>Characters include a russian who fought in Afghanistan, a south african merc, a snake eater, a local, and a few others
>Set to be a tale of redemption for former war criminals fighting against elements of the ANC who have taken to banditry
>Not sure if modern audiences would watch a three hour war movie about finding redemption on the battlefield after a lifetime of fighting for reasons that are essentially meaningless
What would you want to see from this movie?
Do your characters have any connection to each other?

Several were on opposite sides in the Cold War.

So it's a period piece set during the eighties, with references to Seven Samurai, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, and Fail-Safe, perhaps?
It's a kind of old men's army with elements of :
>Reaganite Marine snake eater
>Apartheid-era SA Merc
>Russian Arab
>Afghan Arab
>three unaccounted for, let's say Turk, Levantine and Iranian
All fighting against the ANC... This doesn't have much going for it, organically-speaking, but it's an interesting concept.

Nah man. It's a modern piece. US military pulling out of Iraq, a Green Beret on prolonged deployment there, and an old Russian hanging out in the place he remembers being young are what kick things off.
The Russian fought in the Afghan campaign as a young man before the fall of Communism. The South African has fought in all sorts of conflicts but isn't as old as the Russian. They've become friendly enemies and even worked merc jobs together since the fall of both Apartheid and the Iron Curtain. Our green beret is the young man here who enlisted to fight in the war on terror.

I'm genuinely interested, post more please
Make the American and Russian spies. You can connect any of the characters that way very easily as anyone operating in an OGA leaves things as open ended as possible. That's what the Expendables did.
Just being a Green Beret doesn't make sense for him to know people from other regions. Being a Green Beret means you are specialized in a region and don't really move.

I'm having some trouble putting together the characters ages and motivations. What I have so far for a few of the key players:
>Russian soldier, spent much of his youth in the soviet-afghan war. Grew to love Afghanistan but saw everything he once stood for fall. Was an older man when it happened though and dealt with it through healthy cynicism. Introduced dealing with a hostage situation in Kabul.
>South African soldier. Fought in African Bush wars before working for the security services. Was laid off while still a young man at the end of Apartheid. In contrast to the Russian still aching over everything he once believed in being ended suddenly.
>Youth, Green Beret. Still idealistic and largely unbloodied, essentially the rearguard of the Americans cycling into rotation as they leave.
>Our native. Not 100% sure of his story yet but his wife was definitely taken by the ANC.
Is Kabul Pashtun or Tajik territory, I'm not sure I'm reading this symbol correctly. The star would suggest Pashtun.
>>63080789
Pashtun, but it would likely have strong Tajik influence.
>>63080789
pashto
>>63080817
So our Iranian samurai comes from Eastern Iran.
>>63080863
Quite probably a former Savak.
>>63080890
And our Afghan native is former Mujahideen?
Is China using the ANC to wrest control from the U.S.?
Does Afghanistan possess any strategic value for them to blockade SE Asia, or to use it as a platform form for Westward air campaigns?
>>63080926
No. A nobody who picked up a gun from a downed fighter on one side or another.
>>63081015
No. The ANC just sucks really hard.
>>63081037
The ANC has no political motivation beyond enriching itself? That's an interesting irony in a land of jihad, but it seems a bit pat.
>>63080133
Would watch this if it was decently made.
Continue, OP

Read "The Dark Art", which is a memoir by a former DEA top dog. The Afghan anti-drug people make a nice sideline ripping off drug dealers and reselling their product. The country has no functional institutions.
>>63081108
It's shaping up to be a mostly kill em all redemption story.
laser guns and titties
>>63081139
Does the book make an extensive mention of the Afghan and Chinese history of opium production?
Most people probably just think of the wars of export in the 19th Century, and so the notion that this has altered in the 21st is intriguing. There are actually many ways in which the Chinese might comprehend Afghanistan more fluidly than the Americans do. An apparent intelligence risk which might form a lot of suspense. Afghanistan itself doesn't represent a very compelling threat.
>>63081233
Narratively it isn't supposed to. It's supposed to be a story of old warriors and young finding solace in fighting for what is right instead of what is politically expedient.
>>63081233
>>63081322
That said, the Opium Wars are a fascinating subject.
>>63081322
So it's MGS Snake Eater then?
That it not be made
