(1/3)
We start with a bank robbery, no set up. This starts playing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKxodgpyGec

Main robber pulls mask off, it's Robert De Niro.

Flashback to the late 80's. 12 students and teachers:
>Keanu Reeves
>Leonardo DiCaprio
>Robert De Niro (again)
>Christopher Walken
>Scarlett Johannesson
>Tina Fey
>Bryan Cranston
>Meryl Streep
>Jack Nicholson
>Danny DeVito
>Laurence Fishburne
>Betty White
Are dancing(?) and stuff happens.

Flash-forward to the summer of 2010. A rich billionaire kid with a trust fund (Dane DeHaan) is about to get a big meeting of the minds of the business world together very close to Wall Street. His financial advisor (Jerry O'Connell) suggests that they postpone the meeting in light of the Flash Crash, fearing that if they slack off on controlling their interests in the stock pool, they'll go under. The Billionaire shoves off this warning and plans out the meeting.

We see what the 12 are up to a little. All different stuff. Then the 12 get together for a reunion. Things turn sour when [DeNiro] suggests they hit the game and pull off a heist one last time (they did this a lot in the 90's, but smaller scale). All disagree as it is too risky, but [DeNiro] explains that the plan is fool-proof because the servers the hacking firm they used is off-the-grid (I don't actually know if this would work).

Slowly as the movie progresses, each of the 12 begins to agree to the idea while also balancing the problems in their lives. There's a lot of duality.

Meanwhile, an FBI agent (Nathan Fillion) and his mysterious contact (Aidan Gillen) investigate a mild insurgence reported by a businessman (Nestor Carbonell), who's view of the NY skyline is marred by a larger skyscraper nearby (it's DeHaan's building). [Carbonell] wants the FBI to keep a tab on the shady business he suspects at [DeHaan]'s business, and [Fillion] reluctantly agrees.
>>
>>62933152
Yeah!

In all seriousness though, what's everyone working on?
>>
>>62933178
(2/3)
As this happens, a very busy doctor (Edward Norton) has the FBI rummaging through the hospital he works at after a false-flag hack was enabled by a splinter group of unknown origin, causing him much stress. He's important because he bought a share of [DeHaan]'s company and he's a suspect, as the attack was directed towards the company, with which the hospital was given a federal grant, and the legislator who approved of the grant was [DeHaan]'s uncle, a ruthless patriarch (Stephen Dillane).

[Dillane] wants to restore balance to the stock market by wiping the slate clean, with any help he can get. His primary grudge is against hacktivists and people like the 12. Because of his insecurity and his lust for control, he bribes the FBI to clear illegal federal grants into the company's hands (which DeHaan is too naive to realize). Because of all this, the 12 find that pulling off a heist will be harder than expected, so they must infiltrate in style (quite like Oceans).

So, [DeHaan]'s aunt and [Dillane]'s sister (Sarah Goldberg) is a brilliant economist whom is invited to the meeting of the minds. Unfortunately for [DeHaan], he has never met his aunt before, doesn't know what she looks like, his uncle will not be supervising her entrance, and she's currently on vacation in Italy. The 12 plan to bait-and-switch the aunt with one of their own (Fey), temporarily kidnapping [Goldberg].

So, [Fey] enters the main room and is greeted by [DeHaan], all assuming she's the aunt (Dillane is not present to set them straight). She sets to set him straight by swindling him into selling a large sum of shares to sharks and to invest the rest in military technology. [DeHaan], of course, agrees as he thinks she's family and follows through with the plans, although the effects are not immediate. This segment is longer than it sounds.
>>
>>62933198
(3/3)
Meanwhile, the others get ready for the heist. But first, the deal-maker (DeVito) has to secure a copy of disks detailing the computational and physical architecture of the building as well as clearance passwords and keywords, including algorithm data swept off the main hard-drive; all from a former FBI agent. It's at this part that he gets into his apartment and meets [Reeves] and [DiCaprio], and the name of the heist (and the movie) is revealed (The Great One).

During the meeting, many entrepreneurs from around the States offer sound financial advice and ideas, mostly brainstorming and whatnot. At this time, the heist goes into full form. [Johannesson] has to seduce [DeHaan] to distract him and [Fishburne] must intimidate him and his officials, posing as an IRS investigator, alongside [Cranston].

Anyway, as things happen, [DeHaan] becomes more and more suspicious until [Fey] finally breaks down and actually lies (you think she'll tell the truth) and [DeHaan] drops all suspicion and the meeting continues. They clear all connections in both proprietors names and the grants stop coming, and an algorithm that generates random, fake, and promising numbers is installed.

Weeks pass, [DeHaan] and [Dillane] are arrested by the FBI and the building is blown up (that's what the military technology part was all about).

As the building falls to the streets below, [Carbonell] watches on from his window and smiles.

It would be around 4 hours long.

I'm trying to create a doable script for a short film. Haven't found a compelling story that can work but I'm hopeful, I'm thinking of also getting a light meter or Zoom recorder to better my production
>>
>>62933178
>Forget You
Fuck no, that's an awful heist song.
>>
Is there really any point in spicing up/polishing my script? It's pretty bare bones and to the point with not a lot of flowery language and it's not very detailed. I'm just worried potential actors will be turned off reading it
>>
>>62933226
It just came up in my head for no reason so I wrote it down. It's subject to change.
>>
>>62933231
Yes. You may find it alright but it's always best to have someone else look over and polish some details over to make sure they make sense. You don't need to go over board with dialogue or actions but enough to get the idea across and to where its not vague
>>
>>62933225
I'm doing sort of the same thing, I'm doing a really short 5-minute script about a guy who stole a short-range teleportation device convincing his friend to help him break into the place the device was stolen from and erase any evidence of it being made there.
>>
Thread reminds me of film school where mostly everyone's ideas were terrible but they never shut up about them. Except worse.

Yep, that's basically all we do here.

Sometimes there's work posted, but usually it's the same people each time.

One 2-3 hour shot of a woman sitting on a beach (pic sort of related) and the story is told to us through narration. The last few minutes is the woman walking straight into the ocean until she disappears into the water.

Did this for a media arts and sciences class at my college. It was extra credit.

Did this as a rush-job so I could have something to turn in. Wrote, shot, edited (as much as a single-take can be edited), in the course of 2 hours.

Sounds lazy.
>>
>>62933439
Okay.

What should I do?
>>
>>62933178
The cast needs recasting work. Most are too old, none would be interested in working in a genre they are all accomplished in and it seems like too much of an ensemble cast. Try to focus more on a realistic lead.

The narrative will need work and it needs more clearly defined acts. Also needs work on the soundtrack. 4 Hours is too long even for an extended cut.

Two brothers (Bale and Kutcher) who fight a lot drive on their way to Las Vegas on the I-15. Along their way, they meet a drifter (Gillen), a casino owner in Mesquite (Shatner), a fortune teller (Davis), and a "dancer" (Cox).

In the end, the two brothers decide that they need each other and put their differences aside.

And so they end up going to see their dying mother one last time instead of going to Vegas as we were lead to believe.

How about I give you another one of mine.

A father (McConaughey) is on the look-out for his daughter's dog. Along the way he meets a cop, a junkie, and a criminal, and captures the advances of his daughter's teacher (Diaz).

In the end it is revealed that the dog was at the daughter's grave and the father realizes that his true love is his wife (Farmiga).

2-3 hour seems pretty long desu. Even for films that do well at holding one's attention, that's long as fuck.

I wouldn't recommend becoming a critic because I doubt you'd have anything to offer there either. Your investment of time spent researching film is likely exaggerated, as is your not having anything left. Work harder and do something useful with your life.
>>
>>62933633
Sounds a bit cliche. I think you should consider writing 3 acts focusing on the drifter returning home from las vegas. act one with the Shatner storyline (might be too old for casting though). Second act he leaves with the dancer but first has to make peace with the brother (bale). Id cut Kutcher entirely.

Doing it for your benefit. Lots of people have dreams, but young kids seem to believe the rubbish told to them by coddling parents or society. Truth is, most aspiring filmmakers stay dreamers because they're lazy and don't have any real work ethic. Then they spend their lives trying to recover from all the years they spent chasing dreams.

>setting out to be a screenwriter

actually such a fucked up ambition. the industry for screenwriters is basically a game of attrition bugging everyone you can until they buy your script to mangle up into something entirely different
it's not easy work, it's not stable work, and you don't even have the satisfaction of carrying out your creative vision
if you want to make films for the love of film: direct your own scripts.
if you want to write for the love of writing: write literary fiction
if you want a job in the industry: be a grip or something
>>
>>62934044
>most aspiring filmmakers stay dreamers because they're lazy and don't have any real work ethic.
And that's where I'm stuck at. I really have no one to blame about my shit skills and minimal work except for myself.

When you say you're gonna do something, your brain gets a rush of dopamine that makes you think you actually did it. That's why we have people (like myself) who are all talk and no action.
>>
>>62934057
Filmmaking won't change that.
>>62934071
Not if the movies he makes are crap.
>>62934072
I understand it as the sentiment of a spoiled youngin who doesn't think they have anything to lose.

Oh well. It's your life. Accomplished filmmaker here btw. Lol.
>>
>>62934131
You really just gotta be a Jew to get into the screenwriting game, or have a lot of connections.

Look at Max Landis. Meh talent, but his dad killed some kids and Vic Morrow and also made one of the best movies of all time (Blues Bros.)
>>
>>62934044
My problem is the fact that women are shunned in the movie industry.
>>
>>62934189
Even if the movies he makes are crap, he's still creating content and learning skills in the process. It certainly beats wallowing in self pity and shitposting here at any rate.
>>
>>62934206
It has to be that because my script has had some critics say it's good while others say : "this would cost too much money, no, we're not going with it".

If I just knew someone personally who had the power to make it into a reality, it'd become one.
>>
>>62934189

>Accomplished filmmaker here btw.

See, now unless you post some evidence we don't care who the hell you are. Anyone can claim that shit.
>>
>>62934147
Stop saying you're going to do it and just do it. If you're really honest with yourself and can admit that you're truly passionate for it, then the commitment should be easy and it just becomes natural so-to-speak. It becomes like jerking off, you love doing it and you'll keep on doing it until you can't anymore.

What I did was buy a shit ton of research books relating to my story, basically forcing myself to do it because I'd feel guilty if I just let all these books go to waste. Then I scrapped whatever hobbies that weren't productive towards my goal.

I hope this helps.
>>
>>62934216
It sucks to be feel like and/or be told your work is shit though. It hits you hard in the gut and that you might not ever make it.
>>
>>62934216
That's nice, but you need to be exceptional in order to make it as a filmmaker. He could learn some skills, and if you practiced writing stories, you could learn some skills as well. Doesn't mean you'll ever write something worth a damn.
>>
>>62934231
Why not you? Independent filmmaking is literally the best way to break into the big leagues.
>>
>>62934209

It's my personal aspiration to become a critic. Once I have some money I'll make personal films and maybe show them at festivals.

I have no delusions of being a gifted artist, but I love the arts, I love reading criticism, and I love reading art history. Currently taking a English/Film major and will try to get into Film/Lit criticism while working McDonalds in the meantime. (I've also considered teaching but that takes a lot more education and so $$$...)

And you know what, if I never move beyond wageslaving, at least I have the arts. I don't want much from life. Maybe a woman to love, but that's an (arguably) different issue.

Anyone else want first and foremost to be a critic here?
>>
>>62934313
Hey, if Lana Wachowski can make it, so can you.
>>
>>62934382
>Anyone else want first and foremost to be a critic here?
Not a bad idea but what medium to intend to use as a platform to critique? Writing for a traditional newspaper or doing clickbait or youtube reviews?
>>
>>62934293
So save up the money.
Richard Linklater spent a few years working oil rigs and putting aside money to make Slacker. Take charge for once in your life. If you want something go after it. Who just "has the money" to make films? Robert Rodriguez made El Mariachi for $5000 and that secured him a place in Hollywood.
>>
>>62934370
Sure. But again, his posts denote a certain kind of aspirational filmmaker - one borne of laziness. These types rarely ever make it. They would be better off giving up on being a special snowflake and finding some real skills.
>>
>>62934372
They are not excuses. The ideas I have are more creative and elaborate hence slightly higher budget costs. I've most of all my friends because I quit school, but I'm going back in a couple months. I do have a few friends but they have no interest in film and they say: "Yeah, but what's the point in making a film? We're not going to be famous."

I live in the middle of Hamilton Ontario Canada where there are hardly any film makers that I can find.

I fucking hate this planet, I just wish I could win 5,000 and then I'd have enough to pay some people at least, to make my shorts into a reality and thus establish a portfolio.
>>
>>62934453

I used to suffer from this. You gotta push your scripts down to the earth. Think less high-concept.

>>62934445
>Take charge for once in your life.

I did that last year. I quit my fucking job and school to write a screenplay and a book. I spent 9 months writing almost 24 hours a day, where the fuck did it get me? I lost 8 grand in savings to paying rent, and a script rejected, although a book published.

I took a risk because I was told risks work to be successful. Not anymore, I'm taking calculated/measured risks now on.

I have money saved up in the bank, but that's for surgery I need. Fuck everything.

Don't do it man, nose jobs are fucked. I suppose I understand gender surgery but when you start fiddling with specific features you're getting a little cut crazy. I knew(know?) an incredibly pretty girl
who had a huge schnozz. She got a nose job and I can't look at her the same now. It's just fucked. Too much vanity. Not to mention you can tell it's fake. Spend your money on living expenses or film related stuff.
>>
>>62934724
You're going to have huge chunks of bloody gauze in your nose and if you so much as sneeze you're prolly gonna faint from the pain. Fuck that senpai.
>>
>>62934550
You're not wrong, but don't let that discourage you. People tend to separate art from artist if the art's good.

Quick tip: Don't do a lot of trans soapboxing like in Sense8. While that show itself was enjoyable, Jamie Clayton's character seemed to be there mainly as Lana's mouthpiece.
>>
>>62934674
But working harder is pretty key in filmmaking. Because most people come into film out of laziness, and they aren't prepared for the work it takes.

Other stuff, like having talent or vision, can't be acquired, and don't gaurantee success anyway.
>>
>>62934788

>>
>>62934827

>>
>>62934788
>>62934812

Dude, brah

Its just a nose job. It's not like I'm getting typical facial feminization surgery like:

-forehead reshaping
-jaw reshaping
-lip implants
-nose job
-hairline lowering

like most transgirls do at once. Then again, I have an androgynous-fem face, so I only need this. I hate my god damn nose. Even when I convinced myself I was going to live as a man for the rest of my life, I still was going to get it. It's happening.

I just fucking wish I had that 8 grand again. I would've used that money instead to establish my portfolio of short films. I was hoping I could somehow get a writer's job out of a spec and use that money to fund a low budget film. Oh well. I'm never giving up. YOLO.
>>
>>62934827
Obviously, and I'm not trying to be a filmmaker because I'm lazy. I'm doing it because I love film, and I'm prepared to put work in to make that dream come true.

The shorts I posted, I'll admit they aren't necessarily the best. But I learned from the process of making them, and I want to use what I learned to make the next short I make a little better, and then the one after that a little better.

I want to keep working.
>>
>>62934893
Post your nose.
>>
>>62934822
I know.

I'm not doing any trans soapboxing. I understand what appeals to audiences. I actually write male-oriented movies, lots of action, strong stories and thematic thinking material and whatnot, think The Matrix, Star Wars, Interstellar. I write my stuff similar to Nolan.

I'm not a SJW and won't be politically correct for films either.
>>

I understand what you're trying to say, but Nolan's a pretty shit writer. Exposition all over the damn place.
>>
>>62935029
Please don't hate me =(

My stuff is like his in that all my stories are High Concept and thinking films. I do have exposition because the worlds I create need it for people to understand, and you can't trust the audience, because unfortunately there are idiots in it.
>>
>>62934873
When I said to work harder, I meant work harder in school or at your job, because the poster claimed that film was all that he had left. Which sounds like bullshit to me.

I myself toiled in a crap job for a decade before an old friend happened to remember me and hired me to do a music video. From there, I've received more work and I can pursue my own projects in between.

The place should be respectful, but what differentiates 4chan from...other sites...is it's ability to completely and totally shut a nigga down when it needs to.

>>
>>62935315
Nah. I hate when people use that quote as a motivational slogan. My point is more, if you don't know jack about film, if you're lazy about honing your craft and in fact have no talent for said craft to begin with, and if you have nothing really to offer in terms of content beyond gimmicky premises which sound like commercials, then trying isn't going to make much of a difference. You're better off pursuing something else.
>>
>>62935427
I know, but like I said earlier >>62934905 I want to work harder.
>>
>>62935309
Trying does though brah. Nothing is done without trying. What we have artistically around us is evidence of that.
>>
>>62935382
Why would I need to disclose that at all? I said it merely because I thought it relevant. I nearly ended up in a dead end job (human resources) paying down insurmountable debt, and I actually had talent.
>>
>>62935474
It matters because you acted like you had made it on your own. If your friend hadn't happened to think of you for that gig, you'd probably still be working a mundane office job. Give credit where credit is due. Don't act all high and mighty calling other people lazy.

OP here.

This thread's been fun. I appreciate "accomplished filmmaker" for shitting on my work, and later my work ethic. Makes me want to work harder, get shit done.
>>
>>62935474
You're just one of those pathetic fucks who blame others for not working hard enough when, low and behold, you got where you were because muh connections.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is ultimately how you get in, this is the lesson here folks.

IT'S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW.
>>
>>62935498
He remembered me because I was talented. Believe it or not, having a bit of money thrown your way doesn't pave the way for a career.
>>
>>62935559
Understood, but in the ten years you were working a job you hated, what were you doing to get out of that? You're leaving out key details. Were you directing short films in your spare time? Making YouTube videos? Give us details.
>>
>>62935545
This is true of any industry though. That said, social media and YouTube have at least made it easier to get your work noticed.
>>
>>62935545
Again, this is the mentality of people who play the lottery. Yeah, chance plays a part. But the dude was friends with other guys back in film school, and those guys were never contacted because they were lazy and had no talent to begin with.

Also, you don't just suddenly make it by making one good music video. It just opens doors for more projects.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvG90Rh6fQw
Made this piece of shit 5months ago. I've pasted it in here few times.
Now im heading outside to shoot a shortie for some cancer foundation stuff. Gonna paste it here next week.
>>
>>62935519
i can only hope you're smart enough to not let some fucking shitposting autist discourage you from doing what you want to do.
>>
>>62935630
Fuck off with your lottery shit already. It's old.

It is about who you know, ultimately. The jew fuck Max Landis never would've been where he is today without muh nepotism, murdering daddy.
>>
>>62935630
Here's what I've gleaned from your posts so far:
>went to film school
>graduated, couldn't find a job in the business
>settled for a crappy office job
>friend from film school gives you an opportunity that opens new doors

It's fine that you had talent but you don't appear to have been utilizing it much until you got a shot thanks to a connection hooking you up.
>>
>>62935680
Then why try at all? You either know someone or you don't.
>>62935588
After film school I was a wreck, and spent most of that time in a rut. Then a few years ago I started seriously studying film and brushing up on my grasp of the craft. I directed a short film and then my buddy contacted me about the music video.
>>
>>62935754
That's great that it worked out for you but in the future, try not to be such a condescending dick in your posts.
>>
>>62935754
>Then why try at all? You either know someone or you don't.

You try, because eventually you meet someone who has the ability to get you in the door.
>>
>>62935738
Again, part of it is chance. You can be talented, and work hard at it, and still be nowhere.

And again, when I initially told the OP to work harder, I was talking about school or at work. He's young. He shouldn't hang his hat on a dream that likely won't come true. My two cents.
>>
>>62935848
You're a dumbfuck that needs to stop posting.

I wish the young man good luck, and that karma will give him your position and you lose yours, which he so clearly deserves.
>>
>>62935823
And this doesn't work for most people. And included in 'trying' should be working hard. However, if it's alk chance, why even do that?
>>
>>62935848
Not everybody thinks they're going to be the next Kubrick or Tortellini or whatever. For example I'd be content directing low budget stuff with my buddies forever. These threads are about getting better at what we're doing, not selling ourselves on an impossible dream.
>>
>>62935848
He could be in a similar situation that you were in though. You're essentially telling them to give up and focus on something else. After being in a rut for a long time, you decided to start devoting effort into what you were actually passionate about and that led you to where you wanted to be.
>>
>>62935891
Judging by the videos he's posted, the only position on a set he'll get is serving coffee or guarding a door.

Buncha sensitive snowflakes in this thread who think everyone should follow their dreams. Hope life doesn't kick the shit out of you too badly.
>>
>>62935949
You don't need to hope anything. There will always be sensitive fucks of course, but they might even make it.

Fact is, you need a thick skin to survive in this industry. And with that, I say go fuck yourself again, cause I could give less than two fucks what a moron like you thinks.

I do wish the people who are actually decent people and talented in this thread, good luck though. There's no guarantee, but then again, YOLO.
>>
>>62935949
Let's see the short film and music video you directed.
>>
>>62935985
There's NO way he's going to post anything he did. I've been checking this thread every little while and laughing at the fact that there are still no links. Fucking joke.
>>
>>62935924
But I was responding to a guy who claimed he had nothing but film, which doesn't sound like a guy content with making films in his spare time.
>>62935931
But he shows no real talent or vision. All I'm saying is that there's a better bet to take in life. One shouldn't be clouded by this "follow your dreams" blather. For every person like me, there are a dozen who fell between the cracks.
>>

>>

>>
>>62936222
I believe you but I also think you're too scared to be judged after all your big talk.
>>
>>62936234
He's trying to be a "big man" when really he's a little one. He puts down others because he feels he's somehow in a higher up position. Either he can post his crap, or he can gtfo.
>>
>>62936087
>>62936087
You're obviously an arrogant little faggot. Quit insisting your "talent" got you anywhere and just admit that the guy you had a full on homosexual experience with in college gave you a break out of pity.
>>
>>62936234
Again, think I'm being misunderstood. I do think the videos posted upthread were crap, along with some of the ideas. Hardly controversial. Outside of that, I offered advice - to try something else and not be too hung up on a dream at such a young age. There are so many avenues in life. Am I being a dick too? Sure. But take it or leave it. There are plenty of people to tell you to chase after your dreams, but it's no skin off their back to say so.

>>62936666
I wasn't saying either of those things though. I'm saying that film is very hard to get into, and requires, at the very least, a good work ethic to make something that will get noticed. Most people default to film because they're lazy. It becomes their dream because everybody has a personal connection to film, and they don't know what else to do with their lives. My advice was to not put so much stock in these dreams, especially at such a young age. Apply yourself in your studies, do something with your life, and then see if you still have these dreams.

Little whiny bitch who won't post his shit.

>>62936590
To be fair anyone who does really have a job in this industry, be it in commercial video, wedding videography, television, or whatever else have you, really shouldn't post their work on here of all places. The majority of you are a bunch of highschool kids and dropout wannabes. What would anyone gain from posting their work other than to prove something that doesn't even matter in the first place. If you don't want to take the guy's advice, fine, but don't try to turn this into a shitstorm because your own insecurities make it impossible for you to believe someone who may happen to work in this field would be giving such advice that you don't want to personally hear.
