So I'm watching an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation and Dr. Crusher is the only one who remembers bringing an fragile old friend aboard. When she can't find him, she alerts the crew and they do passenger log searches, deck by deck searches, Starfleet personnel searches, and the like.

All this work and they don't just go to the video of Dr. Crusher coming aboard the ship... with or without friend. Would video be obsolete with all of the computer technology that they have?

that would have ruined the episode though

>UHURA: Captain, both amplitude and frequency modulation being used. I think I can pick up something visual. It's a news broadcast using a system I think they once called video.
>SPOCK: Television was the colloquial term.

>SONNY: Yeah, the boob tube. I'd like to see how the Braves are doing after all this time. Probably still finding ways to lose.
>DATA: I believe he means television, sir. That particular form of entertainment did not last much beyond the year two thousand forty.

A good 40% of TNG and DS9 plots would be resolved at the first sign of trouble if they had CCTV cameras. You just have to suspend your disbelief or tell yourself that the Federation puts civil liberties far above security
>>
Yeah, I guess video tech would take a hit once you have holo-decks for porn.

>Braves
That poor soul, nobody tell him.

Books are sort of relevant, films are books for people that can't be bothered to read. Why not?

a lot of technology on tng is kind of considered absolute now for example

http://www.popularmechanics.com/culture/movies/g1035/5-ways-star-trek-tng-would-be-different-if-they-made-it-now/?slide=6

slide 6 of this makes a really good point

Once broadcast TV is dead they should just open up the airwaves and let anyone who wants to run a pirate station do so. The youtube kids would stay off, it'd just be the oldschool crazies, could be fun.

>improving the ship's computer's search
>implying the computer isn't already god tier
>"Computer, what are all the known chemical compounds in the universe that could cause this problem that's happening right now?"
>"Computer, list all known people who might have stopped at this station in the past year and may have ties to the Romulan government."

But when Geordi was investigating a years-old away team mission, after which several persons involved perished in mysterious circumstances, he had full holodeck 3D reproduction of the original incident.

So when they do need video, then they have not only video but a full virtual reality recording.

--

Funnily, you may remember the beginning of Star Trek III where they review the video of Spock dying, which was actually the film footage.

--

And whenever investigating a suspicious ship explosion for foul-play, they have complete telemetric data on the entire thing, and might even replay a video when going over it.

--

Conclusion: They have/ don't have video according to plot-convenience needs.
