How do none of thes fuckers in LOTR develop PTSD or any mental problems after the whole journey is over

The hobbits get back to the Shire and don't seem to be phased at all about what just happened. How can they come back and act like nothing fucking happened?! Is there something that goes into detail in the books that I"m missing?

In the books, when they come back, they have to deal wtih Saruman who established a crime network over the shire.

Frodo and Sam fades off, and Merry and Pippin become local heroes. They didn't live through anything that traumatic. Frodo and Sam, perhaps, but not M and P.

The book differs strongly in the time scale. I think they stay in Gondor for like a year after the War, or like a summer. Pippin having sworn fealty to Aragorn is called back many times throughout his life as well.

It is unknown whether or not Frodo and Sam were traumatized by their trip to Mordor, but Frodo wasn't called to Valinor just as a reward, he lost something in that quest, especially when he got stabbed by the Nazgul.

Tolken was in WWI. He saw men die. What do you think?

there's literally an entire fucking monologue at the end scene where Frodo explains why he's going to live with the elves that describes post traumatic stress disorder. Hint: Listen when he says "some scars run too deep"

Frodo literally fucks off with the elves because he can't go back to being a hobbit

There's literally a whole scene, when Frodo is working on his book, where he talks about how difficult it is getting over what happened.

So you wanted the original high fantasy good vs evil story to end with, what, frodo freaking out at the sound of fireworks and getting addicted to anxiety pills?
Like the other anons said he clearly felt some changes but that'd be a complete waste of time to focus more on it.

I'm not saying Tolkien should have written a whole medical history of all the characters but I was just curious if it was ever expanded upon in one way or another

It's a lot more mild in the movie than the book. In the book, Frodo post-Mordor occasionally has catatonic episodes, flashes back to his major physical traumas (stabbed by the Witch King, poisoned by Shelob, finger bitten off), has Ring-withdrawal issues and seems very withdrawn and depressed. He's clearly got PTSD, plus a somewhat more spiritual trauma.

In the movie this is tackled with a shot of him drinking tea and looking like he belongs in a Cialis commercial.

IIRC It's even implied that even Sam might be allowed into Valinor one day because he bore the ring for a while, as well as used it.

why does wearing the ring grant you into Valinor, because not succumbing to its power is a feat worth reward?

OP's a fag but what he's talking about is why i love this scene so much https://youtu.be/J3oXr7XVuhc?t=58s

Yes, the movies (LOTR and Hobbit) have these feelings of victory in their concluding scenes, but in the books, Tolkien always puts a reminder of what was lost. From the first day of Arda to the last, stuff was lost again the way, never to be had again. In the Silmarillion, elves are always focusing on that.

These stories end well, sure, but not in absolute goodness, except perhaps at the end of the Hobbit book (don't remember, wasn't that good of a book)
