Why even live in a world where The Walking Dead gets 20x more viewers than the LITERAL best show on tv right now?

And I'd be totally fine with it except that it seems like most anons here are part of that viewership and won't even touch The Leftovers.
>>
I watched the first episode and it was pretty bad to be honest
>>
>>62906235

Damon Lindelof is the reason and honestly after Prometheus, L O S T and Tomorrowland you can't blame them for being put off by it.
>>
>>62906301

You're exactly right. I was completely offput seeing Lindelof's name when season 1 aired. I watched a couple episodes and dropped it cause I knew exactly what he would do with the show.

I picked it back up a couple weeks later and honestly I respect Lindelof so fucking much now. It's so rare to actually see a writer learn from past "mistakes" and actually evolve. The Leftovers is fucking brilliant and Lindelof has done a complete 180. He has such restraint now.

I was super satisfied with season 1 and somehow season 2 is even more brilliant. Watching this show just makes me so fucking happy.

I watched the first 2 or 3 episodes then dropped a few weeks back is it really worth a second chance. Whats so great about it btw?
>>
>>62908903

I really like the characters and how the aftermath of such an event has warped them, I mean if episode 3 with Christopher Eccleston didn't get you invested in seeing how it plays out nothing will, that was the episode that really hooked me and a lot of other people.

>>
>>62906354
I was able to drop my lindelof prejudice while watching the first episode.

Then the words "there years later" popped up on the screen.

I get what the show as going for, but three years is simply far too long for 90% of the shit they're showing, and that length of time was chosen entirely to remove any obligation on the part of lindelof to expand or explain the not-rapture, as the book was only set about a year later.

The first season takes place across the course of another year. Which is a very respectable time frame for the shit shown, as long as you ignore the 2 years of "nothing happened." So the second season starts 4 years after (which lindelof forgets in 205). The problem is the season looks like its only going to happen over the course of two months, if that, and everyone is just going completely batshit crazy out of nowhere for no good reason after four years of kinda sorta keeping it together.
>>
>>62906301
I went into the show during season 1 knowing that I'd probably get burned by some Lindelof bullshit but just needed something to watch while my ambien kicked in. Season 1 was kinda meh, but season 2 has been really good so far, especially with their use of music.
>>
I watched a little bit of an episode and it was some nigger talking about a bird in a box or some shit. It was unequivocally terrible.
>>
>>62909205
I can't wait for them to play "where is my mind" while a character misunderstands an event again.

Bullshit, look how much 'Murrica changed in 3 years after 9/11. 3 years is absolutely enough time for a lot of that shit to happen. What do you think would take longer to occur?
>>
>>62909279

No kidding, the character admits that even, judging the entire show from it? Fuck off
>>
>>62909304
>longer
>>3 years too long

I see reading isn't your strong suit.
>>
>>62909329
The series is filled with little nuggets of shit writing like that, though. And one's enjoyment of the series is dependent entirely upon how they either ignore or excuse the shit writing.

I was saying this (kind of) about the first season. It was the best thing HBO had going for them since The Sopranos in my opinion. Haven't seen the second season yet. Didn't look as promising as the first. Looking forward to it still.

Also, I don't take TWD too seriously. It's entertainment. I enjoy it, but honestly wouldn't be missing too too much without it.

The Leftovers has its moments and so does TWD. Zombies have mass appeal. OP needs to get his elitist attitude in check.

What the fuck are you talking about? Even death couldn't stop her, so I'd put make her my number 1. Plus, I find her oddly hot when she puffs her smokes and probably laughs at Garvey's little dick every time he takes a piss.

How's this season been? Loved the flawed first season, but I've only seen one episode of this season.
>>
>>62911111

Really good, as usual Christopher Eccleston's episode was FANTASTIC
>>
>>62909137
The first few years would just be everyone trying to explain wtf happened. Crazy cults pop up but their existence isn't entrenched in American life. The federal government doesn't quite get evil yet. etc. Three years is a good time to get past the immediate "wtf?" and get into the actual, long-term consequences. Which is what the show is about.

INB4 this show is stupid cuz it's longer than 5 seasons
This season is 8-9/10 overall, but 10.000^-1.00322/10 within the shows context. But it's dull without a real endpost. Every zombie dead? every human back alive? only 200 people in any given state/country? Humanity doesn't die, it just adapts.

>>

Homeland security was put into place a year and a month after 9/11, and it took that long because the hysteria couldn't be maintained.

4 million voters vanishing from the US would surely expedite things a great deal, and without any sort of corporeal entity to anger by expedition (read: countries with nukes, maybe), basically every barrier to legislation on the level of homeland security would be gone. So the book taking place about a year after would be a decent timeframe for people to start just start waking up from the mass hysteria and realizing their lives are in complete shambles. Two years doesn't work as well. Three years doesn't work at all.

When I mean "fed government doesn't quite get evil yet," that's not "federal government hasn't legislate laws." Like any evil turn in a government, it takes time. I'm sure laws were put into place and cults in the beginning were handled in a democratic way. But S1 showed the government fucking murders people on a regular basis. That takes time before it starts happening.

Your "two/three years" thing is completely arbitrary and seems like an obsessive criticism just to criticize the show. The show is different than the book.
>>
>>62909228
Last episode you can hear it in the background near the start, getting a little tired of that trope myself.
>>
>>62911368
>But S1 showed the government fucking murders people on a regular basis.
That's mostly, if not all, lindelof OC.

Also the number of years has to do with how people process loss. It's three years later and people are just now burning/discarding the possessions of the departed? That's something that happens within a year or doesn't happen ever. There's tons of little niggling things that should have happened within the first 18 months, that's just now happening, for the sake of drama, etc. The entire convention sequence was just ridiculous as well, for being 3 years and some months later. Season 2 has more of this and its even more absurd (four years later I decided to join a cult for a week or two just cuz!).

All in all, everything just comes off as contrived and silly. Forced into place by someone with little to no understanding of how people actually process grief for the sake of removing any obligation to expand upon or address the premise.
>>
>>62911566
Yes, it was Lindelof OC, and it makes sense and works. Again, the show is much better than the shitty book.

What you're saying might happen with death, but this is something worse than death. It's the simple unknown, the lack of finality.

Point being, lindelof moved the show 2 more years after the not-rapture so as to make the rest of his OC less laughable. This makes everything else, which is a pretty concise representation of how people struggle with loss (and the fallout of their kneejerk reactions to it) a year after, look completely silly for being set 3 years after.

There is literally never going to be an explanation for the departure. The author who wrote the books has explicitly said it 'will remain a mystery'.

desu it would be different for everyone so arguing over something as relative as a span of time is not only pointless but circular.
the premise of the show was never meant to be explaining why or how the departures happened. the creators have stated this.
