What do you think a director does on the set of a commercial? A television episode? They direct another person's vision. They take control of the cast & crew like a director does, but they're using somebody else's scripts, storyboards, designs & notes. Jackson easily could've done this for The Hobbit.
It's a matter of ego and professional pride, he doesn't want to put his name on something that wasn't made according to HIS tastes and sensibilities. This is fine, even beneficial, when the director has a strong vision. In this case, Jackson had no vision of his own and no time to think it through, he just couldn't swallow his pride and make another man's movie.

The movies sold all well because of LOTR, the quality was secondary.
Remember that Jackson originally sued the studio for not letting him direct the movies. Guillermo Del Toro was set to direct the trilogy and had been working on it for 2 years before the studio finally figured it would be cheaper to let cry-baby Jackson direct them. Then he proceeds to ruin the movies and complains that he didn't have enough time. Of course, he doesn't mention the fact that he took a big ole shit on the story by adding that Legolas-Tauriel-Kili love triangle which wasn't even in the fucking books.
I hope they make more movies from Tolkien's stories, but for fucks sake leave Peter Jackson out of it next time.
I really needed to go back and watch these. I only watched them once, in theaters, but I only remember the BoFA being really atrocious. Maybe I was just optimistic and felt that even after the first one was kinda meh, they had potential with smaug, but it just never panned out.
