Name a movie that has damaged its genre more than this.

>Paranormal Activity (2007)
>Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
>Insidious (2010)
>Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)
>Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
>Insidious 2 (2013)
>The Conjuring (2013)
>Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014)
>Insidious 3 (2015)
>Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension (2015)
>The Conjuring 2 (2016)
>Insidious 4 (2017)

These are all the same thing

Paranormal Activity is the worst one. I like Insidious, Conjuring was meh but infinitely more respectable than the PA series. Horror comes in cycles, slashers of the 80s, atomic age of the 50s, and courtesy of the PA series we're stuck with generic exorcism / ghost / found footage movies. The genre of horror that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Thing is with genres like the slashers or torture porn, even when you were watching a bad movie of those genres they were mostly still entertaining. These exorcism / ghost / haunted house movies are just boring as fuck. These are made solely to milk teenagers out of their pocket money who will only see these movies so they can talk about how hilarious it was when Stacey jumped so hard she spilled her popcorn. Every movie is made for money, but a series like Saw, regardless of what you think about the quality, was made for horror movie fans, they genuinely wanted to entertain you with those sequels. Movies like the PA series and countless studio commissioned horror movies that it has inspired (Devil's Due, Devil Inside, Dark Skies, The Forest, Ouija, Annabelle, The Possession, The Apparition) are made for the lowest common denominator with no desire to entertain horror fans.

To further defend the Saw series, cause it get's a lot of bad rep because it's a long running horror series that wasn't made in the 80s like the Friday the 13th series so "hardcore horror movie fans" shit on it endlessly because it's not nostalgic to them, I hate how people accuse Saw of ruining the horror genre for a few years by popularizing the "torture porn genre". This accusation is spouted by absolute retards who have no knowledge on the horror genre whatsoever. 2005-2010 was a great year for horror, we had a great selection of studio produced horrors from a wide variety of genres. Saw influenced absolutely fucking nothing, there literally was no "torture porn boom", if you disagree, feel free to name some aside from Hostel and Captivity.

PA sucks. I saw the first one in high school and of course it spooped me to the point I didn't want to walk around in the dark for a night or two. I saw one of the newer ones recently (set in California or Mexico and they end up in an old house at the end run by a cult?) and it was just dumb. Maybe because I'm older I don't get the hype or like >>70299122 said, it's only meant to tell your friends about who spilled their popcorn. Anyway, I hate found footage movies now because they all try to go for the same gimmick.

Lake Mungo is a pretty good "found footage" film. I put it in quotations because it's sort of like a mockumentary but uses the found footage element too (in very interesting ways I might add). I guess because it uses more than just a video camera set up in a bedroom it feels like more effort was put into entertaining the audience.

They haven't damaged anything. Knockoffs of knockoffs of knockoffs have existed in horror for decades. Just cause this is the trend that popped up in the time you decided to sort of pay attention doesn't mean its the one that actually has any lasting impact.

The first paranormal activity in its original incarnation was a fine haunted house movie.

That's all it should have ever been, a fine movie that was made and then forgotten and maybe rediscovered somewhere down the line.

What it did not need however, was Hollywood bullshit like changing the original ending (which was great) to leave room for a sequel or 5.

Basically fuck Hollywood.

I think it opened up the genre of found footage as a whole and got some gems out of it. VHS for example: a collection of found footage films (shorts really) by various directors. Some of the shorts were really good and most of the others were pretty bad. When done correctly it can be an interesting film.

No. Blair Witch re-opened up the found footage genre. Found footage has been raging ever since.

Cannibal Holocaust was the first.

it was actually Punishment Park, which came out 1971

Which is a masterpiece, btw. Not that the city of /tv/ would know that

It's called an anthology you retard and VHS is garbage. I applaud it's existence to break up the monotony of the endless haunted house movies but it's garbage. Insert obligatory comment about how amazing Safe Haven is but it's the only worth while segment in the entire trilogy.

>>70301214
I wish people would post more about films like this instead of HURR DURR X MEN WASN'T THAT BAD
>>
>>70302127
even if they did, it'd just be shitposted as 'what are some other foundfootagekinocore like this?' And then it would get deleted by the mods because its not GOT.
>>
>>70301941
Nah, considering the varying qualities of the packages, the first two are decent films overall. Only Viral is totally terrible. Safe Haven is probably the best of all segments, but not the only good one.

the battle of algiers was first, you plebs.

learn to kino.

only thing worse than found footage is found footage about ghosts or demons. seriously if I cant see the bad guy its not scary. saying that, found footage where there is a killer or actual monster is normally below average.
>>
>>70302435
I didn't say what was first or not. Barely matters, Also, it's La Bataille D'Alger, child.

I was specifically replying to the two people saying CH and then PP were "the first" that inspired all this shit.

They weren't.
