At no point could this have been a good sequel. This isn't Taken 2 where if they had taken the correct elements and focused on them they could have continued with an OK franchise.
This entire movie is based on a premise that I'm sure most people would've expected to be a 5 second "here we go again...but with GIRLS" gag at the end of the original film.
Instead this is a Hangover 2 type sequel where they decided to try to milk the success of the original.

No matter what it would've been kind of stretched out as a full film, but that doesn't mean it needed to be contained to a few seconds at the end of the first one. And it definitely wasn't a hangover two type situation, that was literally the first one in a different city, plot points and all. At least neighbors two while it did have the same premise didn't just replace the gags, it changed a few plot points too. Still think it was garbage. And also taken is not an "OK" franchise, the unrated version of the first taken is pure kinography. The only major thing they changed was the torture scene but it really did make it so much more badass.

Taken 1 was amazing they actually fooled me into seeing Taken 3 after Taken 2 was so shit because I was sure that they couldn't fuck it up twice. But they did.
What I meant was that say the plot of taken 2 focused on Liam Neeson's character in a different race against time situation like say his movie "non-stop" was actually taken 2. That would have been perfect.
Same deal as what they did with all the die hard sequels, they're not "Bruce Willis trapped in a plane/boat/train etc" it's more a guy being dragged into a similar situation.
Instead it was just another kidnapping storyline.
With (Bad)Neighbours 2 they never had the chance to do anything other than just the same idea again. Which is why I say it shouldn't have been anything other than a final gag in the original.
It wasn't as bad of a repeat as Hangover 2 but it's more like that kind of a sequel than say Harold & Kumar 2.

Well with taken could they really even call it taken if it wasn't about a kidnapping? I get your point about it but I don't agree, and I really think the second was the only bad one. The third wasn't great and the first one does make it look like shit, but you can't sit here and tell me you didn't get hype as fuck when he walked into that basement and started picking up gun parts around the room and put it together to go fuck people up. I think Seth and Adam are going to do a flip flop, very soon. Seth rogens last movie, and probably next movie will completely suck, but Adam Sandlers movie that came out yesterday is actually pretty good.
