No, Ashildr called him out and he admitted he made up the bit about the thing draining him and maybe not having enough energy to be immortal.

>Ashildr: Is he immortal now?
>The Doctor: Do you want him to be?
>Ashildr: I don't think I want anyone to be.
>The Doctor: Well, probably not. Probably the power would have been drained by the whole opening and reversing the portal thingy. There'll be enough power to bring him... back, but not enough power to keep him here. Probably.
>Ashildr: Did you just make all of that up?

I know many people will disagree with this, but I think the show has lacked a proper zany, fun, colourful runaround since at least Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, possibly even Stolen Earth.

Episodes these days seem to be very desaturated and dark and while I love that look I'm not sure it's working for a family show like Doctor Who, especially when it's not being broken up by anything more colourful and fun.

There also seems to be a lot more standing around these days. Not just since Peter Capaldi took over, but the Matt Smith stories generally seemed to be lengthy conversations in single (fairly dark) rooms.

I miss the days of (particularly) fun, wacky series openers that just served as a reminder of how much FUN the show could be.

I know it's incredibly superficial, but RTD's episodes would break up the talky bits with a bit of running about through colourful sets. It just felt more... eventful and, well, FUN.

We just seem to have week after week of "the Doctor arrives. He talks to the villain for half an hour without moving anywhere. The episode ends."

I MISS all the running around! The show just feels a little joyless at the moment. Possibly also because the supporting characters just seem to be there as victims. Their lives are saved by the Doctor, but they're no longer enhanced by having met him.

Anyway, I'll sit back and let people call me "hater" now.

>>62769878
Robot Of Sherwood was a fun runaround. There hasn't been one in series 9 though, I agree.
>>
>>62769878
I think you're trying to make two separate arguments here:

One, that you think that the episodes in Moffat's era have been too dark. I can understand why you would make that claim about Capaldi's seasons (and even then, wasn't "Robot of Sherwood" fun enough?), but not about Smith's.

Two, that RTD was better than Moffat at making the episodes move at a steady pace. And I sort of agree with that. RTD was really great at keeping things pacy. Look at "Partners in Crime": the first half or so of the episode is mostly just Donna and the Doctor investigating and trying to figure things out, but RTD makes it extremely lively by cross-cutting and juxtaposing the Doctor's scenes with Donna's.
The first time I watched "Human Nature", it stroke me as being a slow-paced episode, but it was only slow-paced in comparison with the rest of the season surrounding it. It would feel just right in Series 9.

Everything we saw was part of a scripted sequence of events planned by Rasmussen, the doctor just happened to land on the set and become part of the action.

All we know is that there's some kind of entity that infects, consumes and takes over it's host where upon it gains shape shifting abilities. Just like The Thing really.

Whether the monsters are eye boogers or the morpheus machine created them is up for debate. I don't think they were/are though it's a misdirection on Rasmussen's part to stop people figuring out what they really are.

Just woke up, had a pretty GOAT dream where Jack was supposed to be executed by some guys with guns, but in true Jack fashion he put on his own blindfold and apologized to the people supposed to shoot him saying it's all muscle memory at this point.

When a dude tries to shoot him in the head, Jack goes action hero, attacks the guy by grabbing at his gun arm, breaks the arm, takes the gun, proceeds to shoot all the other guys before they can even react, Jack then walks away taking the blindfold off
>>
>>62773952
Literally zero hype, as I am for every episode.

and for the survivors, it'd be good if they were some of the "rejects" of society or comprised of at least some people with problems. People who are blind, people who have ADHD, people with short attention spans in general, drug users who wouldn't have access to the video or care to watch. Along with people in general who don't like watching those kinds of videos that have death for one reason or another.

And so the Doctor has a much less than ideal group of people he has to lead and get to do stuff

No, the monsters are eye boogers AND made by the Morpheus machine.

Please stop trying to justify the episode by saying none of it was real. All of it was real, exactly as laid out. The ONLY THING that didn't make sense to the Doctor was the idea of spores.

There were two things he didn't figure out:

1. Rasmussen is a Sandman
2. The video was the real plan all along

The ending would have been spooky if it had been more subtle. Making it like 10 minutes of the Sandman standing in front of the camera and falling apart while repeating himself over and over and going "RAAAAR BE SPOOKED!" ruined the effect of what they were going for. They did what Doctor Who always does these days: They spent 3 times as long as necessary on a scene that overexplained everything twice as much as anyone needed. If they'd tightened up the scene and left out some of the repetitive exposition it would have been FAR more effective.

I'm in the minority but I thought it was great, I loved the twist ending. Always nice to see a story where the Doctor doesn't win in the end

I miss RTD for his characters. He was really good at making a varied cast of characters that felt real and who interacted in interesting ways. Moffat's characters are all the fucking same and just act as plot devices.

The wonder and awe at the "future/modern day" confusion over colloquialisms etc.
>>62776156

To endure even longer sequence of riding a tank playing guitar? No, sir, thank you.
>>
I'll still never forgive Moffat for depriving us of a "Last" Doctor. The idea of a Doctor who was now on his last regeneration had so much story potential. Does he begin to have fears of risking himself? Because if he dies trying to save just one person, that's it. Game over.

They'd be able to market it so much, even if they did have a plan to keep the show going. But no. Moffat had to be greedy and take the story for himself because he knew he'd likely be gone by the time that happened.

Like, why waste it there? Everyone knew Matt Smith wasn't the last Doctor, it was retarded to pull the "Oh here's two other regenerations that totally counted now Matt Smith is the last doctor but we aren't gonna reveal that until his final episode where you know he's gonna become Peter Capaldi anyway!".

From a business standpoint I fully understand finding a loophole to make the series go forever. I just don't understand why'd you waste it at such a pointless time where the audience doesn't care, and for many don't even realise that Capaldi is meant to be the "first" Doctor.

As far as i'm aware, and i'm not baiting here, the script was dramatically changed mid-way through shoot at the request of Peter Capaldi who refused to film until it was "fixed". That's why the ending feels rushed and out of place.
>>
>>62776425

> I think the show has lacked a proper zany, fun, colourful runaround since at least Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

Season 7A was full of episodes like that. And they were shit. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and A Town Call Mercy were camp in the worst way, and unoriginal about it.
>>
>>62777046
no
>>
>>62776998
Because the episode is so boring it's hard to concentrate.
Also, his explaination basically summarized that episode doesn't make sense because dastardly plan.
>>
>>62777067
7B as well. Which was also shit.
>>
>>62776954
Well of course it doesn't mean it will be good but coming from Moffat I expect something good. And looking back, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, The Unicorn and the Wasp (though the writer will never write for the show ever again) and others were funny romps in the middle of an arc. And they were miles better than Fear Her or Love and Monsters which weren't funny.

The fun episodes didn't have to make much sense, just show that once in a while the Doctor and Clara have fun adventures with happy endings. We don't get that anymore. It just looks like they come into a situation, somehow make it worse and make it end on a bad note.

Also, I'd take a light hearted fun episode with a weak plot than a dark episode with a weak plot. At least it'd be funny.
>>
>>62777046
There is an unconfirmed twitter post about him leaving the set on one day and saying those words which could have been about any part of the production most likely a technical problem.
>>
I just read a chapter where Ian and Barbara are reimagined as incestuous siblings who discover crucified men in the Tardis, so Barbara jerks them off and then they fuck while she stares at them.

And to think, BBC Books turned this one down?
>>
>>62777111

I think it's because the dark and "scary" episodes are more marketable to the Hot Topic/tumblr fangirls who are buying a grip of merch.
>>
>>62777030
Capaldi is the first Doctor of a brand new regeneration cycle.

So for all intents and purposes he's the First Doctor again. Obviously I'm not saying he's supposed to be the William Hartnell Doctor, but he's not the "12th" Doctor.
>>
>>62776860
What did I say that was wrong? Moffat denied the audience an actual final regeneration, because he needed to try and force some sense of drama into Matt Smiths final episode, which was retarded because we all knew he wasn't the last Doctor.
>>
>>62776839
Sounds tedious and boring. I'm glad he skipped it.
>>
>>62777194
The BBC would never create the illusion of the show ending. A new doctor would have been cast well ahead of any story about the final regeneration for simple marketing reasons.
>>
>>62774848
Insomniacs wouldn't not have a reason to look or watch the video, in fact if anything insomniacs since they have nothing better to do would watch the video.

They'd probably even be amongst the top people to use the Morpheus anyway
>>
>>62777264
I'm more annoyed about the story potential that was squandered.

Obviously we'd know the show would continue somehow, but the suspense would be in how it'd be pulled off. Matt Smith suddenly going "Oh btw I'm the last Doctor lol" in the middle of his final episode added nothing to the story.
>>
>>62777218
- not person you just replied to btw

I agree with you only because Moffat hammered the 'doctor will die' into the ground. I do think that the Doctor on his last incarnation would've been a good idea though.

Would he want to revisit old friends?
Deal with old enemies one last time?
How would he get a new set?

The sort of thing I'm thinking of is a mature version the character, sort like the things 7 got up to.
>>
>>62777148
No, those are Alan and Ida Mortimer from the Sixties novella "Doctor Who and the Invasion from Space".
A bit of knowledge about the Expanded Universe and rejected ideas for the TV show from the Sixties helps when reading Campaign.
>>
>>62777328
Eh I've had enough stories about the Doctors own personal melodrama and struggling with his identity.
>>
>>62776859
Source? Or just b8?
>>
>>62775836

The staged portions were him waiting in the sleep pod like he had been hiding from the Sandmen, and him revealing his fake plan of spreading "spores" on Triton. And obviously the video that he had already begun making, which the Doctor believed was his alibi but was actually the way he intended to spread the Morpheus signal to make more people turn into Sandmen. Did you even watch the episode? It was all very plainly laid out.
>>
>>62777305
Of course that makes sense, but the person I replied to said the be fucked for microsleeping even if they don't notice it. That's not how the sandmen work. It's not all sleep, just sleep induced by the Morpheus signals.

>>
>>62777431
why?
>>
>>62777487
Because the practicality of using sunglasses to activate/deactivate/analysis things is very limited.
>>
>>62777424
But wouldn't you need sleep anyway considering you're only getting the signal? I figured you'd still need to sleep for the thing to get triggered.

Not like the signal through the video puts you into a 5 minute or whatever sleep like the Morpheus thing does.
>>
>>62776839
I absolutely agree with you.
I just hope that the show will get to do that plot one day. After all, we don't know how many regenerations he has left now.
>>
So how's the season going? Good? Bad? Shit?
>>
Can we take a moment to reflect on how shit "Sleep No More" is as an episode title?
I would've called it either "Bring Me A Dream", "The Corner of Your Eye", "Mr Sandman" or simply "Morpheus".
>>
>>62777399

Not that anon, but what he's describing isn't melodrama or struggling with identity, it's facing mortality. Like when you're a kid and you do all kinds of stupid shit that might get you hurt or killed, but you don't care because you're not thinking that far ahead. Then you get older and start recognizing your mortality and start saying, "I'm not going to do that, it might get me hurt or killed!" Imagine if the Doctor had to deal with that -- the idea that the next death would be final. I think what lets the Doctor be so haphazard all the time is that he knows if he dies he'll just come back, but if he didn't have that to fall back on he might react to situations differently. Suddenly the survival instincts kick in and he has to actually be afraid sometimes like a human because if he dies that's it.
>>
>>62777621

Better than 7 and 8, but this show never has a consistently good season.
>>
"Sleep No More" had quite a bit of potential, so it's a shame at just how poorly it appeared to be handled.

Many of the elements, such as the 'Found Footage', curing sleep and Alien Isolation type investigation all could work well.

Then they just sorta fucked it.
>>
>>62777564
The signal is what induces sleep.
>"The pod sends out a coded electronic signal that acts on certain parts of the brain. Changes the fundamental chemistry."
It's the altering of the brain chemistry that mimics the benefits of a months worth of sleep, I would imagine a process like that would put one to sleep.
Regardless, it's still sleep following the signal that causes the sandmen, not all sleep as that one anon seemingly suggested.
>>
>>62777564

The 5 minutes of sleep is just what happens while Morpheus fucks with your brain. They say many times that what it's actually doing is altering brain chemistry. Rasmussen figured out a way to make the same alterations with video signals. But since he couldn't have people watching the video be sleeping, he couldn't just do it for 5 minutes straight or people would turn it off. So he staggered the signals throughout a longer video with an engrossing narrative to insure people would watch all of it and get every signal into their brains to complete the alteration process.
