Fire Snyder

>You could call it “high-brow” comics, but to me, that comic book was just pretty sexy! I had a buddy who tried getting me into “normal” comic books, but I was all like, “No one is having sex or killing each other. This isn’t really doing it for me.” I was a little broken, that way. So when Watchmen came along, I was, “This is more my scene.”

>Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolan’s] Batman Begins. “Batman’s dark.” I’m like, okay, “No, Batman’s cool.” He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn’t, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that’s how that would go.

Marvel concentrates on telling one story at a time, in fact they take 2 movies to cover civil war. DC with a similar story- superman/tony stark wanting to co operate with the government and batman/captain America wishing to remain vigilantes. The difference is that someone over at DC said, "hey I've got a brilliant idea, let's take elements from all these different story lines":
-The inception of the justice league
-The dark knight returns
-The flash paradox
-A death in the family
-Superman vs doomsday
-The death of superman
-Crisis on infinite earths
-Darkseid war
"and we'll just sort of forcebly mash them all together into one giant clusterfuck of a story, fans will love that"

Nah, you could see by TDKR that he was already fatigue'd of doing superhero movies.

No matter if you dislike him, Nolan is a creative, for him to work with enthusiasm you need to give him complete freedom, and there's so much you can do with superhero movies.
Look at how different all his movies are from each other.

Snyder deserves what has happened, and so does WB for putting that guy in charge.

Just let it die.
If we want fun colorful action we can watch Marvel movies.
If we want dark gritty settings with serious themes we have the X-men movies.

Why exactly do we need poorly done TDK copycats with horrible directing?
>>
>>69646071
The difference is that the CGI in MoS is intricately woven into the plot while the airport scene in CW is not only jarring due to the CGI but also due to the fact that it had no place given the tone of the movie.
>>
>>69646071
What's sad is how much of a downgrade Civil War's cgi is compared to Iron Man 1-2, which was made nearly a decade ago. Even The Incredible Hulk's cgi looked better and that was a fully animated character.
>>
>>69646176
The problem here is that Snyder wants to make the punches feel powerful, but instead of showing what those punches do, he makes it as if the camera was in the middle of a richter 9 earthquake for half a second everytime someone punches someone else.
>>
>>69646107
Still better than Civil War CGI though.

Civil war was unironically The CW-quality.

The really sad thing is that DCEU is pretty much doomed now. Looks like all the DC fans here don't see full implications of BvS failing like it did. Not among critics, but among masses in general. That huge drop in box-office after one week says it all about what audiences felt about BvS.

If movie does good, next movie of the same brand will likely have a good pull for audience which Marvel demonstrated. Unfortunately the reverse is very much true as well - if movie does badly, consequences for the next movies of the same brand will be severe.

Expect some very troubling news for SS, WW and JL regardless of their actual quality.

WB just needs to go in a room and say, "FUCK IT" really loudly and then just do away with any cinematic universe bullshit and be the anti-marvel by making artist created standalone movies of their characters. Just give the directors full control to do whatever the fuck they want for one film. They explicitly shouldn't be connected with any of the other ones. It's been proven again and again that the best superhero movies are the ones that don't try to pack in as much shit as possible and just tell one contained solid story.

It's still early into DCEU and they can still bounce back. In particular David Ayer's Suicide Squad looks like it might win back audiences' goodwill.

It's not rocket science.

Get a coherent script and someone other than Snyder to direct. In fact, keep Snyder the fuck away from it. They've got decades of comics and animated stuff to mine for inspiration.

>>69646302

WW can crater hard and the story they'll tell is that people don't like female-lead movies. It won't be that it was a shitty movie or had a (as far as anyone can tell based on her work to date) crappy actress.

Suicide Squad is probably the point of no return for the public on DC's shared universe. If it tanks, Justice League is really going to be up against it.
>>

>>
>>69645754
Goyer has already been fired. He was still given writer and producer credits because they still used his base script to make the final one. Now Goyer gets to ruin Sandman and make a show about Krypton before it blows up.
>>
>>69646520
>Because the bar isn't exactly set very high

Nolan did set it quite high, maybe not for fight movies, but for what superhero movies should be.
Snyder took all that and he destroyed it with shitty 100% CGI fight scenes with pointless destruction everywhere.

He's a hack, the entire world reminds him he's a hack everytime he releases a movie, and he will always be a hack because well entered into his 50's he still releases garbage.
The DCEU will be remembered as DC's The Amazing Spiderman when it gets rebooted.

Maybe or maybe not. From the looks of it SS would be either a Deadpool-level success or absolute flop. I personally predict it to be the latter. Only good film of his is Dawn of the Dead, because it explicitly was a movie made with fun in mind. Watchmen is pretty bad when you consider everything aside from the cinematography and set design. >>
>>69646302
I don't know where people get the idea that audiences hate BvS. >opening weekend
>500 million
>biggest drop in blockbuster history afterwards
>barely 350 million made in the next 2 months
The only explanation for that is that it has suffered from horrible word of mouth.
>>
>>69647041
It's a very well shot film with awful over-the-top acting and hamfisted themes that make all the references and commentary in the book blindingly obvious to even someone casually watching it. It also makes the world way more cartoony than the comic which undercuts the real world allegory. I was a huge fan of the movie when it was coming out, and I still think parts are neat because of how faithfully they copy the book, but as a film, it is uneven and poorly made. Snyder is ambitious but just doesn't have the ability to execute his big ideas very well.
>>
>>69645680
Me and friends had tons of laughs at this terrible shit in the theater, but even we can admit it isn't Nolan's fault. He was trying to do something nice for a community that took him in and let him have free run of their city and it was a dumb nice thing.

You guys know all the cops are real Pittsburgh cops right? None of those people have acting experience
>>
>>69646852
Nolan is overrated and can't even direct a fight scene. Anti-CGI retards still likes him because it's not MUH FAKE CGI, even when he makes the most horrible fucking fight scenes in any super-hero movie. And those fucktards say "it looks real", no it doesn't look fucking real, it looks like 2 drunks pretending to fight. I don't see characters, I see actors in costume moving ankwardly. It fucking horrible.
>>
>>69647285
>He was trying to do something nice for a community that took him in and let him have free run of their city
That's a stupid reason to excuse a director for being shit at blocking shots properly. There's no excuse for letting shit like that slide unless he was just done with caring and wanted the thing over with.
>>
>>69647082
I'm of the opinion that it has less to do with bad word-of-mouth and more to do with a general apathy towards it thanks to the critical reviews. Diehard fans (and those curious) likely made up the bulk of the opening weekend like most tentpole movies do whereas casual audiences often make their decision to support (or not support) the movie from the second weekend to beyond.

Some of my friends/family who have yet to see the movie aren't so much writing it off as they're being conservative about what to spend their money on. Most of them are actually keenly awaiting the DVD release.
>>
>>69647618
But BvS had absolutely no competition.
People decided to stay at home and not watch anything instead of watching BvS.
>>
>>69647388
It's probably partly the latter but it's also really hard to block it all when you've got a ton of normal guy cops and normal guy Pittsburgh civilians playing at action scenes.

Either way it was a nice thank you to the city that caused some horribly laughable moments in webms but didn't ruin the movie.

(As an aside I'm in it and so are a ton of people I know, and that's cool enough for me to forgive)

In this day and age there's always something to watch (or pirate if you hate legal streaming). Theatres are losing audiences in droves, and the ones that do go often rely on a sure thing in advance.

It's not really a slight against the people in it though. Nolan, as a director, failed to properly do his job by not working around those obstacles. It may have not completely ruined the movie, but he did a shitty job for that sequence in particular and it lessens the movie overall.

>implying there is anything to fix
>implying Zack is not the director that was promised
>implying it wasn't just the death of superman, but the death of Zack
>implying he wont rise again in Justice League
>implying Marvel isn't the white walkers
>implying that when the superhero movie goes the way of the western, Zack wont be remembered as the Kubrick of the genre

Is that supposed to be an excuse for BvS? When Civil War is crossing its billion as we speak?

Apocalypse will flop, so no more dark X men movies, but I agree. Let it die.
>>
>>69648096
No, but neither can you deny that the good reviews for Civil War strongly influenced the public's appetite to go see it.

Whether a movie is good or bad ceases to matter as soon as you buy a ticket.
>>
>>69647996
I'll concede that, but it'd also be a challenge for any director to do better or even as well with the tools provided.

You're underestimating the ineptitude of Pittsburghers. Hell, I'd put a month salary on 80% of those people being drunk while filming.

And not to be condescending but most people are incapable, or more precisely unwilling, to form their own opinion on things, and often rely on the opinions of a larger group to support their own.

Yes, critics reviews do matter. But unless you are suggesting that there is a global critic conspiracy against BvS, I hardly see relevance of your arguments to this discussion.

>2 movies both by same guy
>people freak out and ask for rebot

Autism much?
>>
>>69646514
I would like that, but the extended universe model has allowed Disney the box office certainty of a sequel while launching new franchises.

The genie is out of the bottle now. It's not going back in.

I don't believe there is a critic conspiracy. But I also find it hard to believe most people hate it as intensely as they did.

I like Henry Cavill and I think he's a great Superman, but he should start taking more responsibility for his character as Affleck has done. Films are collaborative processes after all and his opinion should count towards improving the final product. That is, if he can tear himself away from browsing /tv/ all day.

1. It was hyped to unbelievable levels and people actually expected capekino and after years of waiting received subpar product. The more you hype and promise something, the worse you will be sweared at if you fail.
2. Superhero fatigue is real. While people are willing to endure Marvel's big story to its end in 2019, they are decidedly not willing to invest time in another cinematic universe
3. People are used to certain things in the genre, mainly it being entertaining (not necessarily Marvel's brand of fun), and they are absolutely right. These movies are made for entertainment and when you fail to provide that... Imagine a horror with zero scariness or comedy without fun. People will be pissed.

It's not hard to see why everyone got mad at BvS

>too much hype for a letdown

Yet critics seemed more than willing to overlook TFA's mediocrity (at best) and give it a nice circle-jerk that saw it reach 92% and an average rating of 8.1/10.

This is the guy who directed BvS?
>>
>>69649805
TFA delivered exactly what it promised i.e. average nerdculture nostalgic shit that is easily accessible for children

BvS claimed that it would redefine the genre with end result being MoS 2.0

Yeah you are right. The cgi wasnt that great. But Man of steel showed for the first time what superman could do with his whole power. loved the scene where the powerlady fights the soldiers.

vision in civil war was a let down in comparison. hes also extremely powerful, but he didnt do shit.

Their problem isn't grim dark or realism, its them trying to force dramatic substance into a generic Hollywood blockbuster structure(a ton of plot points delivered though exposition. Huge dumb cgi action pieces, and extended run time with a pacing to match.). Marvel gets away with it because they go for it all the way, no clashing structures.

They need to get rid of either the blockbuster format, or just go ham with it. Right now, the movies doesn't know if they want to be dumb or serious, so they just end up shit.

BvS should have been a smaller movie about Batman verses Superman. Drop the monster, Lex, and wonder woman, cut the runetime, and budget.
