>Annihilation—the first book in VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy—follows an all-female expedition team as they explore a mysterious location called Area X. The women are known only by their professional names (the biologist, the psychologist, the surveyor, and the anthropologist) and, as you would hope in a movie from the director who brought you Ex Machina, strange and unexplainable things start happening. The biologist (Portman) is motivated to join the expedition because...

>Alex Garland’s follow-up to Ex Machina was already shaping up to be another incredible bit of original, cerebral sci-fi long before Oscar Isaac joined the cast. Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s popular (but not too popular) 2014 Annihilation, the film already boasts an incredible cast featuring Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and star Natalie Portman.
JJLanon will be quite pleased
When's Garland going to do blindsight?bl

Can you recommend me any other movies where the protagonists face an insurmountable foe? There was a thread earlier today about the sentinels from X-men DoFP and it reminded me of how fucking tough it was to face these things. (Pic related)

Leave capekino to us.
Why do they have a fist fight?
Why not just discuss it like grown adults?
Are they trying to kill each other? If not, what happens when one wins?
I know people just want to see Iron Man fight Captain America, but whoever starts that fight is seriously going to lose supporters for their cause.

Give me a fair review of this film WITHOUT referring to other DC films, the comics, or the MCU
>>67653434
It's ok.
The editing was bad, the score felt out of place in quite a few moments, Snyder pushes pseudo-complex themes too blatantly for them to have a good impact.
The acting was good for the most part, and it's a pretty enjoyable film as a comic book fan I guess.
I loved it, despite disliking Man of Steel and superhero films in general. I saw it as a quite subversive take on Superman's history, and how that reflects changing attitudes to religion and morality in society.
Three lines really stood out to me: Clark's boss saying "this isn't 1938" (the year Superman debuted), Superman saying "My world doesn't exist anymore", and Lex's speech about God not answering his prayers when he was beaten by his father.
The theme seemed to be that a hero and messia-like figure like Superman...

I liked it
It makes a lot of big grasps to try and reach for a sort of "higher form" above the medium, in that it tries to grasp and execute certain deep themes. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it just misses the mark by a little bit
The worst parts are when it tries to be "Dawn of justice" by lingering too long on set ups for something in the future
What went wrong?

Where were you when based JJ Abrams became the most recognized and influential director in Hollywood?
Masterpiece after masterpiece, he's consistently demonstrated his keen eye for cinematic perfection. This is no ordinary director. No, this kind of director only comes once in one hundred years. This century's Andrei Tarkovsky, JJ Abrams will usher in a new of age of film-making. Revolutionary in spirit, breathtaking in scope, JJ has his sights set on greatness. The bar has never been set so high.
Hold on to your hats, boys. This is only the beginning.

I wasn't too crazy about the second star trek movie.
I wouldn't call them masterpieces but he is incredibly good at what he does.
even Michael Bay is more recognizable than JJ Abrams
