A good director can use colors to set the tone of a scene of the entire movie.
Try to reduce an image to 8x8 pixels then enlarge it back, if you could still recognize the scene then it means the director knows its stuff.

I'm not fan of neither of those shows, Sherlock was pretty meh, but last seson was bad, but Elementary was simply terrible from the beginning.
