In which kind of material do I buy my pants in if I'm going for a walk/dayhike in the mountains in a tropical climate if the temperature could easily rise to 25 degrees on the sea level but gets as low as 10 degrees in the mountains?
>>
>>952327
whatever regular cargo pants are made of. Probably cotton or cotton blend, I cant be bothered to go dig mine out. They''re lightweight, you can roll them up during the day, and they're definitley warm enough for 10 degrees.
>>
>>952327
Natural fabrics are better in hot climates. Cotton is probably what you're looking for, but it can be cotton mixed with a synthetic as long as cotton is the predominant fiber.
>>
>>952327
Just grab a pair of military standard pants from a surplus store. The material handles moisture well, lets air circulate when it's hot and is heavy enough to keep you warm at night especially if you tuck the bottoms into your socks.

My question: What country do you think has the worst litter problem? From my experience I'd say Vietnam.

Can I buy Xanax in Thailand and bring it back into the UK without problems? (I heard that it's easy to get Xanax in Thai pharmacies). And would it be possible/easy to bring etizolam with me from the UK to Thailand? It's technically legal but not prescription.

Scavenger hunt for the most outrageously expensive/pointless item in the shops.

Pick interesting looking people out of the crowd and make up back stories for them.

If you're facing a big delay, try and get a game of cards going with other passengers (transportation delays are one of the best ways to make travel friends).

Used to play hide and seek a lot, but that doesn't go over well these days.

5'2'' 18 y o femanon reporting

going to france in 4 days for two weeks, Paris and Bourdeaux (decided to keep it small since it's my first trip on my own); planning staying at hostels and keeping my budget short.

im scared. what kinds of /trv/-related things should i keep away from doing to keep myself out of trouble?
>>
>>952592
Don't get wasted I suppose.

Sounds stupid, but as long as you dont get caught. Its rare someone gets busted for pharms but they are within the law to arrest you or more likely fine you if you get caught, and drugs fines are usually around £1000.

Not sure about the etizolam, its legal here in the UK as its a RC but i can't comment on Thailand.

When are you going Thailand dude? i land there on the 30th March

I was born in Brazil, lived in Canada for a while. I'm not so big on drinking unless it's wine so I doubt I'll be going to any bars and what not.
Any places I should keep away from? I'm not exactly a big fan of agglomerated places but i take it could save me the hassle. I speak french fluently so I take that I shouldn't be as endangered?

Not trying to jump too fast to conclusions but when I went to Paris I realized that I was in the wrong neighbourhood when suddenly about 20 young shirtless black males appeared. That seemed to be a good indicator for a bad neighbourhood. But again, the chances you would encounter any violence are rather low, just stay watchful.
Oh and if a group of gypsies asks you something, leave as quick as possible and watch your bag as they are master thieves and a plague.

TSA does not give a rat's ass about what files are on your computer -- they sometimes want you to turn it on to show that it is a working computer not a hollowed out dummy full of kaBLAM! (Computer batteries are pretty opaque on their X-rays, turning it on indicates there is an actual battery in there.) This is very rare -- I have been flying for decades on business (I am old) and have never been asked to turn on any electronics by TSA or the equivalent in other countries. NOTE: All bets are off if you act like a dick and earn yourself a strip search and a session on the Probulator. If you board the Hassle Train, they ca hassle the shit out of you. So don;t act like a terrorist or a dick when around the TSA guys.

Now Customs, that could be another issue -- they might care if you are carrying illegal content into their country. Particularly in countries with strict pornography laws and such. But again, I have never had my computer files searched by anybody at customs -- did get my bags searched twice in as any decades.

How long does it take people to get sick of surfing every day and 1 dollar mixed drinks in tropical areas like thailand and the phillipines?

I'm currently trying to decide between going to mainland china for "culture" and girls, which I know I will get sick of pretty fast, or just absolutely cheap tourist distractions like riding elephants, surfing, and cheap alcohol.
>>
>>953571
The thing is, there is a lot of culture in Thailand, and within Thailand. South is different from central, is different from north, is different from northeast (Isan). That's one thing that frustrates me with tourists when people talk about Thailand as an expat farang, engaged to a Thai women. People always talk about the most touristy shit, in regards to Thailand, and ignore the culture of the place, outside the major touristy temples.
>>
>>953574
I guess I should rephrase. I don't really care about thai culture that much. Obviously I'll try it, but it just doesn't have the same appeal to me that chinese culture does.

that's why I'm asking, if I go to thailand just for cheap parties, nice beaches, sports, and good food, ow long do you think that will last?

I just want to go diving, surf, relax at nice beaches.

culture gets old with me fast, even when I like the culture.

Arrive a couple hours early. Keep an eye on the airline, make sure they don't screw around with your departure schedule.

I've never had much luck trying to screw around with my sleep cycle before a trip -- if you can get some Ambien or such, use that to help you get onto the Japan sleep cycle as soon as you get there.

Have a good trip -- Japan is a great destination.

I am a Britfag with a fiance in California. We're going to have to decide which one of us moves to which country soon.
Obviously, her moving to Britain would be the easiest option. It's very easy to move to this country, the cost of living seems to be a lot cheaper here, we have the NHS so I won't get bankrupt if I accidentally break an arm or whatever, etc etc etc.

For a list of reasons that are too long to rant on about, I really do not like living here and would love to move to California to spend my life with her.

My question is how hard would it be for a Brit to get a job and work in America, specifically California? We would be married so I don't know how that effects things like visas or whatever. Obviously having some kind of tech degree or work experience would be useful, being in California, but I'd be going over there with a useless arts degree and retail experience so I'd just be amongst the rest of the shitmunching herd.

how hard would it be for a Brit to get a job and work in America, specifically California?
Would being British give me an advantage in any sort of fields or areas? Will employers have a British-accent-boner?
Is there ANYTHING options besides being a minimum wage retail worker if I don't have a tech degree or tech skills?
>>
>>954229
50 for a plane ticket to Berlin. Another 50 to stay 2 nights in a hostel. 50 for food and beer. 350 for hookers.
>>
>>954243
It will be easy for you to immagrate to california, you will have 90 days to get married to her if you plan to stay. It will take some time for tou to gain citizenship, but it is very doable, probably easier since you arent a 3rd worlder. You wont be able to get a great job with an art degree unless you go to grad school and become a professor or something. No employer is going to give you a job just because you have an accent, but speaking english is important so atleast you have that. Low level jobs are going to be your only option, sorry. That doesnt mean you cant work your way up to something better, though. Like manager or something. Sometimes experience and work-ethic can get you good jobs, too. But it will be more difficult. Also remember that the nice places to live in cali are expensive

Are companies like FlightNetwork or FlyHub considered safe?
>>
>>954243
If you get married to her then you should have no problem actually moving there.
The real problem is finding a job because, no offense, you'd be going there with no skills that can land you a career job, so you'd be just another one of the thousands and thousands in the crowd trying to get a minimum wage job. And you can't survive anywhere, let alone California, on some minimum wage retail job

I'm from the UK, and was wondering whether my country's relationship with the EU was similar to commonwealth and former commonwealth states.

As in free trade, a moving work force and such, and maybe moving to such a country would involve less jumping through hoops? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Hong Kong. Used to live there, it hits me right in the feels every time someone is there, or the city is shown in a movie, a TV show or random internet ressources. Lucky to go there at least once a year, but still.
Also, NYC, although I spent only short trips there, the city (Manhattan really) always get me. The feels are a bit dulled tho, since you are exposed to NYC several times a day through series, movies, pictures everywhere.

I have a QTDDIOT:
How do you feel about "exploring" cities through videogames?

However unimpressed by L.A. eachtime I've been there, I want to visit again every time I play GTA V.
GTA IV gave me a good vibe of NYC as well.
Also I've been all over HK in Sleeping Dogs, considering to get it again on PS4 once it's cheap enough, just to enjoy the atmosphere again. Even though they took lots of liberties with the territory's topography, I feel they quite nailed the immersion.

The Assassin's Creed franchise gave me some nice vibes too, however disconnected from present times the architecture was mindblowing. When I visited Florence, I felt like climbing the walls and free running everywhere.
Finally I'm about to start Watch Dogs, dunno if Chicago is well rendered or not?

>always with the fucking scarf
>the khaki-zip-off's, the black North Face shirts and the scarves

I guess I count.
I have the scarf (black and white check pattern) and the zipoffs. No fleece coat but I have something high-tech and practical from a hiking store for the wet and a bunch of tech shirts that may as well be north face. Only the woolen top is black though.

Mostly I was going for light-weight and quick-drying stuff so that I could wash it in the shower, hang from a bunk and have it ready to wear the next day. Form follows function and they all look like camping/hiking wanna-be stuff because they were made for campers and hikers and I'm not one so I look like a wanna-be. My coat is in a similar basket.

The scarf is different though, I have it because it's extremely practical. Use for smog/dust on motorcycle taxis, soak up sweat in some countries, keep my neck and/or face warm in others. It's useful in almost every climate, wrapped once and loosely, it's light keeps the sun off without making me sweat. Wrapped tightly and folded double or triple, it's thicker and keeps me warm.

The zip-offs are also useful because they serve two functions allowing me to use them in different climates without needing an extra set of shorts. Keeps the pack lighter.

I've got social anxiety, it's only got worse over the years. I have literally one friend. I want to shake myself up to get out of it. I'm currently in the UK, I'm thinking maybe something small, but sufficiently drastic, like packing what I need and just cycling to Scotland to live rough.

I don't care much for comfortable living. I can sleep rough, but I am naturally worried about getting stabbed by crazies. Also concerned that it might end up doing nothing and I'll have just relocated my miserable self to a different place, with nothing to show for it.

I'd appreciate any thoughts/comments/advice on this. It's at a point by now where I need to fix it somehow.
>>
>>957411
I'm in similar situation and in UK considering similar shake-up/change. Not quite sleeping rough. I'd say make an /adv/ thread with more details. Travel might help, but it requires money, so does relocation. There are probably far better paths to take than just going to scotland to rough it. Consider WWOOFing or volunteering and moving. Doctor/social services might be able to help.

I want to visit Paris, so I can say I've been, for 2 days before travelling on to somewhere to have a proper holiday like Rome, Berlin or Athens.

I am interested mainly in history so would like to see the catacombs, Notre Dam Cathedral, the Mona Lisa and, if there is time, Versailles. I'm not terribly fussed about seeing the Eiffel Tower because I've seen the Blackpool Tower and it is more or less the same thing and has more stuff in it like an aquarium and the ballroom.

How possible is it to see the things I want to see in a day? As my wife is a teacher, school holidays are the only option so I would guess the queues will be enormous at the louvre with people lining up to take selfies of them and the Mona Lisa but will they be so long that we have to spend another day in Paris to see what we want to see?
>>

>>
>>957414
The Louvre deserves a full day, but you can see the highlights in a half a day. Notre Dame doesn't have to take long. The catacombs maybe an hour, and has last admission at 7pm, so that's all doable in a day. You won't fit Versailles in.

It's hard to avoid seeing the Eiffel Tower. You don't need to go up. Word is that the view from the Tour Montparnasse is better (because you don't have to look at the Tour Montparnasse from there).

You can absolutely do it but the Louvre is honestly a 2-3 day thing if you don't want to end up just running through it and getting overloaded by impressions.
The room the Mona Lisa is in is usually overcrowded any given day and the picture is honestly really unimpressive. it's just a little painting and you can't even get close to it.

>>957466

Original asker of the question here, thanks for the replies. when I was in Rome last I managed to see the Vatican on a tour in an afternoon but it felt rushed so I know where you're coming from about giving the Louvre a bit of time, the Vatican tour did have it's plus points though as we got to spend a good 15 minutes in the Sistine chapel which wasn't that crowded as you can only get in if you're on a tour or something like that. The Mona Lisa room looks a bit sad with nothing else on the wall in the photo and I think that the soul-less setting might ruin the experience more for me than a huge crowd of people or having to queue for hours ever could, it pains me to say it but I might just give that a miss.
>>
>>957466
Agreed, but with a catch: only if you like art and history. I love both and did exactly what you suggested last time I was in Paris: spent 3 days at the Louvre (5-6 hours each morning, then spent the day doing other stuff). Very worthwhile if you're keen on the sights.

Also, another piece of advice: go early, go off-season (winter), go on a non-weekend. Yeah, there are huge crowds at certain times, but you'll have most of the museum to yourself for a good few hours if you follow the above. I was quite literally the only person in the grand hall where all the David and Delacroix paintings hang, and the Mona Lisa was perfectly approachable if you're actually keen to admire the finer aspects of it (I wasn't).

It is the most convenient, comfy and regular service. It also leaves from the cetre of London so you don't have to add an hour to your journey time to get to Heathrow or Gatwick in the first place and you don't have airport pissing around time to add on either. The service is also very, very rarely cancelled or delayed for more than a few minutes. Hello guise.

I'm going to travel to Europe soon for about a month or two this upcoming fall.

I was born in Mexico but have a permanent residency in America and have been living here pretty much all my life. My understanding is that Mexican citizens don't require a visa to travel to most EU countries and I can even work in some with just my passport. How does this work exactly?

I would like to extend my stay there if possible. I have enough money to travel without working for about 3 months but I wouldn't mind splurging everyone once in a while in a nice hotel room if I was able to offset it with a temp job here and there.

Any help is helpful xD

>>957969
I live in Austria, been to Germany, England, Ireland and other parts of Europe too and never did I have any problem with drinking water

sure, it was a bit chalky in England, but other than that it's perfectly safe to drink. Do you really believe that people in those countries buy their drinking water in bottles?
>>
>>957972
As said before, tap water always goes with different bacteria base. It's not brown water what you get.
Locals has used to that so obviously they drink straight from the tap.

When you have own well back home and get used to that kind of water, tap water always taste weird.
>>
>>957976
so which parts of the world do you consider the water to be better than in Europe then? I mean, yeah the taste might be a bit weird for unknown senses, but it won't be dangerous in any case and perfectly okay to fill into bottles

>>
>>957981
Are you a troll or just stupid? Water quality isn't determined by continent, it's determined by water source, plumbing, amount of chlorination, and many other aspects. In Austria the water quality is some of the best in the world because it comes from the mountains. For cities away from the mountains, you might get chalky chlorine flavored water that's barely suitable for washing.

For the most part, European cities have great drinking water but it's not the case across all of Europe.

It's the former, but often is mixed with the latter. Usually you spend the time with friends/family, and then gather at a large public place since the fireworks are better there. First find yourself a local pub or whatever fills the same social niche if it is a dry country then ask the bar staff if they know anywhere. If they don't speak English or know anyone in the bar that does (unlikely if you're anywhere but deepest China, North Korea or France) then use hand gestures or talk English loudly and slowly, they'll soon understand what you mean.

If a place is non touresty though it probably won't have a hostel, but the pub is probably an Inn where you can get a bed for the night or a local will let you sleep somewhere on his property for enough cash (at your own risk though).
>>
>>959561

Best option would be to be a programmer, website designer, a digital artist or anything else you can just take commissions on and do online then only stay places where you can sit down and work on your laptop using their wi-fi. That won't be a problem in Western Europe or the USA and Canada. Make sure you set up the website where you can take your commissions from and start working a few months before you plan to leave to get yourself set up and a steady stream of work. Get people to pay you via paypal and then you can work from almost anywhere.

Depends on the hostel, if it is a 'party hostel' go for a smaller dorm if you want to actually get some sleep sometimes, in a fairly calm relaxed hostel them more people is fine and it'll save you money. In my experience dorm rooms are for sleeping in and the communal rooms are where the chatting and making travel friends happens so it doesn't really matter that much how many people it is to a room in social terms.

>>959964

Going to Malaysia/Thailand. Live in the US.

Should I exchange my currency here, or wait until I get to Malaysia? Most of the places here have a pretty bad exchange rate and charge high fees on top of that.

Wasn't sure if it would be better there or not.

Part 2: When getting cash out from an ATM in foreign countries, does it come out in their currency?
>>
>>960262
wait til you get there. Superrich is the best exchange rate for Thailand and they have a website that is always up to date. Every bank in Thailand will have pretty much the same rate and the airports won't be different than the banks at the malls.

part 2: Yes and No
For both Thailand and Malaysia you will get Baht or Ringit. In Cambodia you will get dollars

So, what I do is exchange like $30-50 at the airport on arrival and then more later.
>>
>>960266

Excellent, thanks for that advice.

As a follow, where do yall usually store your cash/passports/cards when traveling in places like Malaysia/Thailand?

A backpack seems dangerous since it could be stolen while sleeping or out for the day, pockets seem dangerous since things can fall out.

Probably not going to be wearing any socks, so can't hide money in there (plus I hear people in Thailand don't like you desecrating the King's face, that would probably count as such).
>>
>>960270
I keep my wallet etc in my front pocket. You need new pants if the front pockets aren't deep enough to keep your wallet in.

You are right about the socks and money thing.

You can always get cargo shorts with zippers or buttons on the side.

A hostel will have lockers, you can sleep with a small bag if you feel the need. A hotel might have a safe, use your judgement.

Honestly after 6 years in Thailand I was only robbed once and it was on a trip in Malaysia. On a van ride at the last stop I foolishly left my bag in the van. I did so because the van driver came in the convenience store with us. Fucker's little 8 year old son rummage through bags and nabbed my go pro and other people's as well. Luckily I had taken out the memory card and have all the videos of my motorcycle ride. Funny enough I felt totally fine leaving my Thai registered bike locked up at the hostel in Penang, that was worth $9000
>>
>>960272
Sounds good, I will make sure the pockets are deep enough.

It is refreshing to hear that everyone isn't out to get you, the way people talk here (usually people who haven't traveled) they make it sound like all foreign countries will rob you blind and murder you.

I am trying to pack as lightly as possible, would you recommend bringing the bare essentials when it comes to clothing and pick stuff up in KL (the first stop)?
>>
>>960272
>$9000 bicycle
and I thought mine was pricy at a mere 4000USD
>>
>>960277
Yeah, you can get almost anything you need in either place. Bring so of your favorite clothes but you can always pick up more t-shirts, flip flops, shorts etc there. Don't skimp on boxers though, yes you can get them but finding your size or quality for the price might be annoying.
I always pack a decent pair of jeans and a button down or 2 so if I go out at night I don't look like a tourist wh. Hasn't washed in 3 days. Also, people are out to get your money, but it's mostlytaxi drivers. Don't get into heated arguments or physical alterations and all Will be fine.

It all depends on the hotel. If you arrive earlier, your room might not be ready. In that case you can still leave your luggage etc and go out to pass the time.

Depends on how busy the hotel is. They might have a room ready for you when you arrive, or not long after, but they can't *guarantee* that your bed won't still have someone else in it, or that your bathroom will have been cleaned, until the check-in time stated. Show up and ask; they are pretty certain to at least let you drop off your bags. But then you might have to hang out in the lobby or wander around somewhere for a few hours.

I will be living in Freiburg, Germany for about three months and am currently planning some weekend travel plans to Sete, Leeds, and Berlin for tattoo appointments. I'm having trouble getting the right information down for trains and airplanes and shit like that, is there any good resources for getting reliable information on the best ways to travel and whatnot? Thanks!

Having checked to make sure there are no more exciting Leeds in existence, Leeds UK? Will detail how to get in, look up flight availability yourself:

There are two parts to your pilgramage to Leeds, each as costly as the other:
1) Airports
2) Getting to Leeds, which depending on airport can cost as much as your flight!

UNO
Easiest way to Leeds from abroad should be Manchester airport, where there is a direct train to Leeds city centre. Alternatively, Leeds Bradford airport is closer but less well linked.

I don't know how expensive and what flights are available, but Newcastle and Birmingham airports will take just as long as any of the London airports (more on this later).

DOS
Getting to Leeds city centre is easiest by train:
As a general overview, long distance trains in the UK are damn expensive (with the exception of the Manchester airport to Leeds train) and booking in advance tends to be a lot cheaper (50% less? if booked 2 months in advance)
HOWEVER, this means you have to get the precise train that you book. Therefore, you can be fucked over by flight delays and may want to consider getting a flexible 'off-peak' ticket.

The Manchester airport route is easiest and cheapest at £15ish return - 1.25 hours
I don't know about Leeds Bradford but it should be similar in cost via buses.
For Newcastle, this will cost around £30 return and take 2 hours.
For Birmingham, this will cost around £50 and take 2.5 hours.
>UK trains are priced not by distance
For any of the London airports, you'll have to travel from airport to Kings Cross, then get a train. This will cost just under £70 including underground, and take over 3 hours overall.

For Leeds, the coach station is really central too. Instead of trains, you can also take the coach (national express, megabus). For London you'll still have to go to centre of London (£12 total). Will probably be half the price as train, but at least 50% the time and with grim people.

Trains use: nationalrail.co.uk : all sites charge the same so don't pay any website that charges booking fees. Only use this if you book trains in advance as 'off-peak' tickets don't get cheaper.
Coaches: google megabus or national express

Finally, if you do go from heathrow or gatwick, don't bother with the 'express' services, both are a ripoff.
>Heathrow express costs £12? each way, world's most expensive train

Since all options for Leeds do seem pretty expensive, consider coming to an English city for a few days! (all of the aforementioned places, except Birmingham, and maybe Leeds are great fun)

Finally, to ask, WHY leeds? It seems like somewhere with absolutely nothing unique to be worth a visit...

Considering backpacking in South America alone.
>plan to go on a package for first 2/3 weeks
>then explore a few parts alone

I know I will pick up odd bits and pieces along the way, but how problematic will it be not speaking ingles?
>plan to go from north to south, with me travelling alone in Peru, Argentina and maybe Brazil
>can do a good huehuehue under pressure

Most hotels will have a storage room to keep your luggage for you. You might want to take your valuables with you however as it's just a storage room all staff can access. At 4pm you can come back and get your room. Sometimes they might have a room available in the morning if they weren't all filled up the night before.
