Could we have a Singapore thread?

How is this country as a western foreigner?
Do you have to be a manager in finance to afford a one room cup ramen lifestyle or how bad is the living costs?
How is culture? How is night life?
>>
Culture is a Smörgåsbord of indian, muslin and chinese, with some thai sprinkled in there. Its kinda like Canada in the sense that you're in Singapore but nothing feels Singaporean culturaly speaking.

Nightlife is shit, beers are like 14 dollars each and clubs close at like 12-1, BUT all coffee bars and food places (all of which serve alcohol) dont close till like 4 am, so getting drunk and eating is one of the better activities to do there IMO, since the food is literally out of this fucking world.

Groceries are expensive, not sure about living arrangements tho.

Country is fucking SWEET, highly recommend it.

Cheers on the proper smörgåsbord spelling and thanks for the reply.

14 dollar for a beer? Are we talking fancy pub or even dinner restaurant with friends kind of place?

Is there anything to do aside from beer, work and food?

I've been looking to get a new job and found a place there, but it's not finance so I expect salary to be low. What would you estimate is necessary for survival there?
>>
Country is boring as fuck. It's one giant corporation. Enjoy the sterility.

Any of the hawker centers will probably be 12-14, bars even 20. They're Nazi's over there with anything related to fun
>>
>>1049994
That sounds awesome, better than Thailand if you can afford it.
>>

How is the culture for younger adults (not students I guess)? Would you buy tax free and drink in your home before meeting your friends at a restaurant or a bar?

I'm from Sweden and that's basically what people do there.

I managed to find $9 beers in a bar around the corner from my hostel, it was a karaoke bar populated entirely by locals until we walked in. The owner came up to us after a few minutes, talked to us for a while and bought us a drink to welcome us to Singapore. The heat was nearly unbearable though - just absolutely insane compared to other places in SEA and I have no idea why.
There is stuff to do like the water park, Universal, Gardens by the Bay etc but once you've done them then you probably aren't going to want to revisit any of them again any time soon. Its a very good location for travelling elsewhere in Asia though, you could visit pretty much anywhere in SEA for $100 or less return

It's absolutely piss easy to navigate because everything is in English and the metro is great.

Thats what we did and it made it cheaper, as did everybody else in our hostel. Maybe thats just because its a hostel though.

I always thought China was the worst country I've been to; but now I've been reminded of Singapore, I realise I was wrong.

It's utter crap. It's barely a country, in that it takes about four hours to see EVERYTHING.

Unless you're a middle-aged woman who likes shopping malls, don't even bother.

I honestly can't think of any reason why anyone would visit it.
>>
Food is great, nightlife is decent, not sure I'd want to live there, necessarily. I really like the place but I could see cabin fever setting in a quickly.

Superb place to travel from though
>>
Any expat around?

>The heat was nearly unbearable though - just absolutely insane compared to other places in SEA and I have no idea why.

Because it's on the equator?
>>

>it's barely a country
Well...

Was there a little over a month ago.
>How is this country as a western foreigner?
I didn't notice anything that made me feel like too much of an outsider, and everyone speaks English as a first or second language

The living costs are bad though, $100 usd a night for a pretty shit room, but it's manageable

Culture is very interesting, due to the multiculturalism. Little India is a must to visit, honestly feels exactly like being in Delhi.

The sights are amazing, especially the garden by the bay, but you would definitely run out of things to do by your third day.
>>
I am a botanist and understand there is some excellent plant life (and diversity) on the bits of green left on the island. Will I enjoy this or will I just bitch about the heat. I have done field work in the US Southeast summer.

If you like the city life, this is the place for you. Shopping and eating are all there is to do really. You can visit the zoo, botanic gardens, bird park, aquarium and universal studios once or twice. I live in Singapore and I go to Resort World Sentosa for a nice staycation occasionally. There's two casinos here..one in Resort World Sentosa and another at Marina Bay Sands. If you can afford a room there, you'll be able to get access to the nice rooftop pool. The heat gets unbearable most of the time so people would stay in shopping malls. Transportation here is pretty good. You can get local food from 3 SGD (2.12 USD?) at hawker centers and there are lunch sets at restaurants like Pizza Hut. Drinks are quite expensive in clubs and bars. If you're a western foreigner, you would have no problems getting around Singapore. It's nice for a getaway but boring when you've lived here your whole life.

It's not as bad as people on this thread make it out to be. It's pricey, yes. But there is decent nightlife. And it's very easy to get laid there. The mall Orchard Towers, at night, becomes what's known as the Four Floors of Whores.

If you have the cash to spend, bring back a hottie Asian hooker from OT to your hotel room.

>And it's very easy to get laid there.

well anywhere is easy to get laid if you're buying hookers isn't it!
>>
>>1049923
I would like to live and work in Singapore. It's my dream.
>>
>>1054273
It's not easy to get hookers everywhere though. In Singapore it's very easy, and there is plenty of choice.
>>
A soulless shithole for soulless people. If you are an actual human being, as opposed to a robot, you will be creeped the fuck out within 4 hours of setting foot in the place and will be looking to get out of the place asap. Worst place I've ever been.
>>
>>1053241
It sounds alright. I'm going there for a job, not a short visit.

How's average life for people just out of university? Not that rich, but with enough cash to go around, not old enough to invest in family life etc. Are there sports clubs to join?
Easy to socialize and meet people?

I studied some ecology there a couple years back, and I was pretty impressed with what was still preserved on the island. They've got some nature reserves scattered around, so there's some pretty good SEA vegetation (including mangrove forests) Lots of trails/boardwalks too. I didn't find the heat to be too bad, especially when you're in the shade.

Off the top of my head, the two best places to go for preserved vegetation would be Bukit Timah nature reserve, and Palau Ubin for a full day trip.

>>1053174
I don't know if botanical gardens are your thing too, but they've got one that's pretty famous, I think it's a UNESCO heritage site actually.

They've got another installation called Gardens by the Bay, which are these giant climate controlled domes with all sorts of plants. I'm not much of a plant guy but it's pretty cool to step from the hot humid weather into a cool dry southern California climate.
>>
>>1053241
You ever hop over to Malaysia for fun? Maybe to see nature or something?

I am going to be on exchange at NTU next month.
>>
>>1050084
I concur. I've spent a lot of time in Singapore (maybe cumulatively 8 months). The first two months are great (as long as you don't enjoy smoking weed, drinking, or seeing any good live music).

Then it gets boring as fuck, because you have literally seen everything.

I mean, if you just escape to various places in SEA every weekend it's fine but that's a lot of goddamn effort.

Also good luck getting a job whitey. Singaporeans are racist as fuck.

Ausfag here
The worst people Ive ever met come from singapore
What rich cunts from Buenos Aires are to the rest of the world. Always talking about how great back home is and being insufferably uneducated and conceited.
