Yeah I've been to Buenos Aires as well, they do say stay out of La Boca at night. I took their advice and only went during the day, sorry you had a bad experience there, I didn't have any problems when I visited. The Calatrava Bridge and surrounding area is a good area for night.

The front desk said our "friend" was there looking for us with no other details. The town was dead when we were there guess not hard to find only gringos staying in the main plaza.
Month or so later we emailed Borderlandbeat, they put us in touch with a local reporter who said the armed guys were likely bodyguards for some important cartel guy and the cops must have seen our gringo faces on the highway when we turned into the dirt shanty roads so followed to get a bribe but got more than they bargained for running into mercenary bodyguards. His reply to us opting to leave immediately "oh yes, you would no question be dead right now" and that reporter is also dead, one of the dozens killed back in early 2000s. Other than almost being killed Veracruz was a pretty cool place it's where other Mexicans go to holiday instead of pricey Cancun/Playa Del Carmen.

Once when I was living in Cairo, I was spending the day at Azhar park alone when a security guard approached me. He saw me washing my hands at the bathroom and looked surprised, I assume because I'm foreign, and then he started talking to me outside.
This is all pretty normal (Egyptians are friendly and curious about tourists in general) so when he invited me to walk with him, I thought "sure why not, I don't have much money, so I don't have to worry about getting robbed". He took me to a hill in the park in the back of a restaurant and I thought that I might be able to get a free meal which is like the lottery when you're poor and living abroad.
We talked in broken Arabic, and he picked a flower and handed it to me. I thought okay, Egyptians are a little strange this might be normal here. Then he started saying it was hot and tried lifting up my shirt a little. Then I thought there is something up here. Then he tried walking into me and bumping into me while reaching for my dick. He asked if I wanted to continue walking and I told him that I had to go pray and left.
Saw him on his way out of the park, he shook my hand as if nothing happened. So remember guys, they can always rob you but they might also rape you so be careful.
