Hey there, friendo.
I'm going to visit Amsterdam in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if there was anywhere inparticular you were impressed with if you went there. I am looking to smoke a lot of weed, so if there's a specific place that's for that, let me know.
As well as that, I'll be heading to the dungeons, and the heineken factory; but if there's anywhere that's as good, please let me know. Thank you, you'd be a great help. I can help you with your programming homework if you want(pretty much my only skill) in exchange for help on touristy stuff.
TL;DR: WHERE TO GO IN AMSTERDAM?!?
amsterdam is a pretty cool city but as with most cities in the netherlands, it's relatively small compared to other country's cities, which means that you can see a hell of a lot more in the same span of time.
as soon as you walk out of the central station, you should walk towards the oude kerk (old church) on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. you will be amazed that there is this much prositution literally next to a church.
Even though I live in the netherlands I don't get to amsterdam often so I can't really give good recommendations, but here are a few things I liked:
- the Hallen, used to be an old tram remise. it's filled with sorts of super small food "restaurants" but it's always crowded as fuck
- Vondelpark, not that special but it's a nice place to chill out
- the northern part of Staatsliedenbuurt, if you're into buildings and shit you might like this, there is a museum there dedicated to some socialist building style which is very out of place, might be interesting
also some important shit:

>get the fuck out of the way when there are cyclists coming, dont walk in the middle of the road for the love of god
>even though most other drugs are relatively very easy to get, you should still watch out for drugs. try to take mdma instead of xtc if possible. weed might also be stronger but have no experience with other countries.

I am not OP and I am going to Amsterdam next week (graduation trip with my class). Do you know about any good souvenir shops that don't rip you off with cheap stuff? (Want some souvenirs for my family) and what is a good souvenir anyway? Those wooden shoes(as a keychain or whatever is all I can think of and tulips won't last that long)
Also what is your national dish? I went to London last year and a local told me that the 'tourist trap'-national dish is fish n chips which most people don't eat themselves, something really would be sausage and mash with gravy which i liked way more than fish n chips. And a question about drugs, only weed is legal, right? Or is mdma also legal?
What about renting bikes, that a good idea?

Hey, I'm Belgian. Shitting on the Dutch is something of a national pastime.
As for good food, ehm, you might check out their Indonesian and Surinamese food. Their ex-colonies seem bretti gud. Check out a 'muur' if you get out of a bar/club at 4am, try poffertjes on a lazy afternoon.
Bong here reporting from Amsterdam. Stay out of red light district it is gimmicky. De pijp is nicer area. Trip advisor is a good idea as always. Don't bother supporting shitty things like tussauds etc. Of course Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are a must if you like quality culture although these are busy. Bike hire is cheap probably best to get bikes with hand brakes rather than backpedal brakes. The Pancake Bakery serves good greasy heavy pancakes that will keep you going for a while. Remember to blip your tickets before you get on the train at the airport. Look up the beer tasting place. You will find so many souvenir shops but you are more likely to more easily find better quality gifts either from the museum gift shops or from more upmarket areas. Try to find places that do not just serve Heineken. There are much better beers than that here.

You clearly spoke to some posh middle-class faggot who has never left London, who probably doesn't even know what a scotch egg is because of all the Cambodian Kale Smoothies and Namibian Seaweed cakes he's convincing himself to spend £20 a pop on. Fish and chips are definitely eaten around the UK and it's not tourists keeping the places open.

stfu. you can walk into any coffee shop in amsterdam and buy weed or hash, there's many different types of both, prices range from 5-15 euros per gram, and you can buy pre-rolled joints for like 3-5 euros and save yourself the hassle of rolling.
you can smoke in public too, most of city centre smells like weed. But if there is kids, tourists and police around, they'll tell you to put the joint out.
red light district is aight too, expensive imo but you can negotiate with the hoes... i converse with some for keks while friends were shagging

If you are going for cultural stuff look into an iAmsterdam card. It comes with a transport pass and loads of free entry to museums and galleries .

You can buy it yes, but it's technically not legal so pipe it down you fuck wit. It's a weird thing about Dutch law where the possession of is not legal but allowed, and the selling is in fact legal but the producement isn't. So nothing to worry about when visiting, it's just that it's actually not legal in a sense.
Also as another anon already said, drugs are easy to get, try going for MDMA powder instead of pills when you're in the capitol and try 'n have fun. Also, don't act like the British, no matter what you do.

Rembrandt plene(sp?) Is awesome as hell. Especially now with all the restaurant showing the euro cup. Wished that the Netherlands would've qualified. That would've been a once in a lifetime event. Still fun as hell. A lot of good restaurant and clubs there.

The good food comes in autumn and winter time with hearty venison, boar and beef stews. here is restaurant in Amsterdam that serves these winter dishes in summer time as well for tourist though, called Haesje Claes. But is really focused on tourists.
