hey /trv/,

Last 2/3 weeks of august some friends and I are planning to do some travelling through the balkans.
We're 3 guys in our early 20s and do enjoy culture and scenery, but we also would like to have the option to party.
A couple of years ago we went to Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, so those aren't really an option.
We were thinking Bulgaria/Romania, or maybe a trip down the Albanian coastline, ending in Budva.
Any tips/recommendations?

Ayy, I'll be in Bulgaria/Romania for the last two weeks of August before I head to Hungary & Poland to meet friends. My itinerary, as of now, looks like:
Sofia - 3 days
Veliko Tarnovo - 2 days
Bucharest - 2 days
Sighisoara - 2 days
Budapest - 3 days
Krakow - 3 days

I'm in a similar position though, anon, still trying to find out more on the countries and some recommendations.

I heard Plovdiv in Bulgaria is very nice. A friend of mine suggested to skip Bucharest,
but I heard mixed stories.

I can recommend Plovdiv.

Was in Albania 2013. We werent sure what to expect, as it has a shit reputation. Bus ride from Ohrid to Tirana was a bit of a shocker as Albania is pretty rough in parts. Tirana was an absolute dive, 100% skippable, but once we got to Himara, and Saranda we had a blast. Highly reccomend renting a car from Saranda and exploring gjirokaster, and the hotsprings in Permet.

Food is excellent, its cheap, tonnes of historical stuff, people are extremely happy to have you as a tourist and will go out of their way to help you, and the scenery is absolutely stunning.

Also, bunkers.

Don't skip Bucharest. It's a very cool city with a lot of energy and interesting Communist buildings. Of course it's not traditionally "beautiful".

There is a ferry on Koman lake, scenery from what i read on internet is great. Village Theth in the middle of albanian alps is nice, but road is rough. There is a lot of beautiful nature in Montenegro. Piva canyon, Tara canyon, Moraca canyon, Durmitor, Bay of Kotor with famous road uphill to Lovcen NP. Also, while in romania considers driving through transfogarasan road, lovely place.

I will cycle through balkans, also in august. Im also planning my route now.

Albanian here. Durress is pretty fun, but also gross. Saranda and the Southern coast is absolutely pristine. As far as historical shit goes, just about anywhere. As much as the Serbs and Greeks will talk shit, we are an ancient ass culture, You can find neat historical shit everywhere. If you want to meet funny, goofy people, head up to Shkodra. If you want to see fruit trees planed during the Roman era that old ladies sell fruits from, head to Korce, Also the surrounding villages near Korce are fantastic mountain getaways.

As far as bad shit goes, use common sense. Nothing particularly dangerous as long as you don't act like a dickhead. Gypsies will be your biggest problem if anything.

Thanks for all the replies. We're probably gonna buy tickets to dubrovnik, travel south and fly back from corfu. Budva, Kotor and Sarande seem really nice. Any other places we really shouldn't miss? I think we'll be skipping Tirana
>>
I went to Albania and Macedonia this May, Ohrid with St.Naum was worth a visit, durres was nice, I liked the Permet hot springs. Tirana was not worth the visit imo.

I want just to say that I know 8 albanian girls:
they're smart, funny and 7 of 8 are above 7.5/10.
God.
Someone can confirm my statistic?

ps. I'm not from the country of the eagles.

Bulgarian local here

I recommend visiting at least one of the many caves we have here. Devil's throat is quote popular.

As for cities you should visit, I recommend:
Plovdiv ( the old town is really cool, I was there recently. There's a little shop that sells old socialist-era badges, plates and other memorabilia which I quite liked ),
Gabrovo ( where you can visit the Etar museum ),
the old capital ( better known as Valiko Tarnovo ) is a must, Tsarevets is an amazing place to visit
and Sofia ( though you're probably planning on it already. It's hard to avoid. ).

Avoid the north-western parts like the plague. It's the poorest region in the country, filled with gypsies.

Shipka is a very traditional destination for us locals

The Rila Monastery, if you're into that sort of stuff. Even if you're not it's still a pretty epic place to visit.

Koprivshtitsa is also very popular and with good reason, the entire village is set up to look like it's still the 1800s.

If you like mountaineering or hiking, go visit the Seven Lakes in the Rila mountain.

There are many others you can visit, but I recommend these ones because they're most likely to have decent tour guides and people who speak english. It's hard to find both of those in the more isolated parts of the country. If you are looking for that though, then I recommend just catching the most random road and you will eventually reach some long-forgotten village nobody has given two fucks about for the last decade. Also fields and hills. Lots of fields and hills.

I've only met one Albanian girl. She's in my class at university. But she is incredibly attractive. Both very good-looking and intelligent.
I doubt she's representative of the population, but you can add her to your statistics.

Going to Croatia this August what are your recommendations?

What about dubrovnik? was planning on staying there

Not the other guy. It's beautiful, but it will be very busy (cruise ships during the day means the town centre is packed). It's great to walk around in, just know that it's no longer a city, only like 1000 people still live inside the walls.
