I have some girl friends that are exchange students in both Chile and Argentina and I have seen that they are pretty safe and comfy. But those are areas that are kinda safe from Zika and mosquitoes in general. I would avoid Central America and northern South America tho.

There is many cases of Zika and stuff in Brazil, not really epidemic, but you should avoid.

Btw, Brazil is become more dangerous everyday. The politics nowadays in becoming more and more crap, really unstable, making the country shitty then ever.

BR is really dangerous for everybody, local and turists. As a citizen, i recommend to boicot my country.

Btw2, Chile is a pretty safe and nice country. Uruguay in second place, and i think don't have cases of zika, etc. After the elections of Argentina, things are getting better there but still crap. In 1~2 years maybe will be a nice place again (for locals), for turists it's ok yet. Much (MUCH) more safer than Brazil.

Dengue is a bigger issue for a foreigner since doctors in your country might not be used to it and for them it will be an obscure exotic disease that they might take some time to diagnose. All in all the crime is the bigger issue since crime rate in Brazil is pretty high even compared with other south american countries. If you are from a developed country think about the most dangerous place you can think about in your country and it probably is the level of crime that is considered a low crime area in Brazil.
