Blue - home state
Dark green - been to, stayed
Light green - been to, didn't stay (layovers, day trips, etc.)

Avoiding Jersey is a top priority of mine.
>>
All of the 50 states.
Plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
American Samoa next, when I have time and money.

Why do you want to avoid Jersey, is it bad? I have to live there for 2 months for work training.

Some of the wealthiest per capita residents (big pharma), and big ol' estate houses with horse farms, country farms, shopping outlet malls and quaint businesses on main streets, weekend homes on the shore and so forth. It's really a "garden state" as the plate states. It's just got a few city dwellers who are accented, ghetto, trashy types, just like on Jersey Shore, ya know?

Puerto Rico and USVI should be in your map too OP.

Except for 3 or 4 of these once-visited states, most of my marked states are 6+ visits. I like to travel back to places I love, til they feel like a second home and that I'm coming home again.

RT 66 isn't really a thing anymore it mostly has husks of tourist attractions and sullen desolation. I-40 is mostly parallel to the historic RT 66 so it's a similar experience. With long distance driving imo it's important to identify major spots you like to see then just play the rest of the trip by ear via roadsigns and cool sounding towns. Drive a bit farther to get gas, visit the weird looking gas station of a sad clown selling fireworks and fried chicken. Truckers were pretty consistent with speed due to the lack of hills the true bastards were California drivers. With the straight road ahead your eyes can wander a bit and see the sights. Forwarding tho in California and Arizona there are mandatory Checkpoints (they are super close to the border) where they look for illegal immigrants, if you're white you just get waived through.

>>1085149
I was away for about six week in Phoenix (for work) but only had about 8-9 days of travel. I actually started in Baltimore to Pittsburgh to pick up my sister then to Nashville then to fort Smith AK straight through OK and TX via I-40 and stopping right over the border in NM. Had extra time so over to the grand canyon then to Phoenix. Weekender to Vegas and back. Another weekender over to San Diego and Tijuana (don't go there ever). I drove back by myself pretty much the same way.

I stopped at random weird things I saw on the road tripper app like this history on mankind chiseled into granite around a church and an awesome place called knife city! I am enamored with Loves Gas stations which litter the countryside and stayed for cheap in super shady motel 6's.

From Chicago, been to all of the lower 48. Drove an 18 wheeler for 2 years, so I knocked them all out in about the first 6 months. largest american city I haven't been to is Anchorage AK.

It's probably the most underwhelming travel "accomplishment" in the world. aside from the national parks, a few rural areas that are few and far between and a handful of major cities America is just the same thing on repeat.

go for the 50 state thing if you're close or will do so incidentally (ie travel for work), but do not spend an inordinate amount of time or money to be a completionist over it. it is an empty accomplishment.

No its not. The crime stats are driven up by areas included in Orleans Parish that actually aren't part of New Orleans as well as central city, which a tourist would have no reason to visit at all. I frequently find myself walking home from parties in the uptown area without any trouble. Shit, I even ran from the parade route all the way to Claiborne on night this Mardi Gras to get to my friends house. Just don't spend all of your time on Bourbon and go out to eat at every night and you'll see why it's regarded so highly. All the areas circled in red are safe and worth visiting. Pic related

There are enough tourists right now. People like that can stay away. Don't worry about converting him/her.

Done a good job on the east coast, but I really need to make it out to the northwest one of these days.

The thing I hate the most about tourists here is that they make it impossible to eat at Camelia grill in the summer.

I have a cousin in Billings I'd visit pretty often as a kid and I still don't see the appeal to Montana, but Wyoming is gorgeous. I stayed in Jackson Hole and the area was magnificent.

There isn't anything in most of it until you hit Capulin, and even then there isn't anything.
I drive through it on the way to CO from TX every year for vacation, and dread driving through NM more than anything.

No MS Paint so just used this: http://m.maploco.com/visited-states/

Places I've lived:
Texas (home state, still live there)
Alabama

Places I've been to:
Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida

And I've only been in California for a layover at LAX, didn't step outside the airport.

Honestly I'm kind of pathetic because outside of Texas, I haven't really gotten the chance to see anything nice in any of the other states.

With the exception of when I got to go to Australia a few months ago, I've never been out of Texas for any reason besides visiting/living with other family member.s

Forgot to add, I've eaten at a Perkins in Minnesota in Worthington, so that's what I mean by stepped foot there. My sister said the town looked like a ghetto town (not South Side Chicago ghetto, but poorfag ghetto). Another place we always came to eat was in Pennsylvania along the way to DC, but that was a long time ago.

You should check out the West. I used to only visit states that were along the Mississippi and east of it, but after checking out the Northern Rocky Mountain region, I was amazed. Montana for example isn't called Big Sky Country for nothing; the mountains in Western MT show you just how big the sky really is.
