I was an exchange student in the USA. From Montreal, QC.
Americans are cool. There's nothing really you need to know, imo.
high school or college?
if in high school, find the clique with the hottest girls, that is the best crowd to make friends with.
when a guy from spain came to our school, my friends and i befriended him, and he ended up going to parties almost every weekend, and lost his virginity

Pffft as if. Everyone drinks before 21 on campuses. Cops look the other way unless parties get rowdy or too loud. American house parties aren't like in the movies but honestly some of them are not too far off.

American house parties are totally different than the rest of the world.
Imagine a house full of black, white, asian, indian, hispanic and every other kind of people getting drunk out of there mind, making out with eachother, having sex, being loud as fuck and having fun.
That's what it's like at an American house party. It's like a microcosm of humanity in the funnest possible way.
I'm so glad I got to experience that when I was in the states. I'll never forget it.

People who like "robust" beers from home will not care for most mass-market beers in America.
That said, there are now a shit-ton of locally brewed "micro breweries" beers any place you go in the US, making all kinds of interesting beers. My opinion is that too many of them have gone off the deep end in pushing hops WAY too much, but that's a matter of taste, to each his own. many people seem top like really "hoppy" beer now..

There are lots of diferent party types in europe; in Scandinavia it's pretty much like in USA, but pre-Soviet Europe is Vodka/cigarettes shit party
I was never an exchange student, but hosted 3 exchange students in the US. (well, my parents did.) Even the most social, outgoing one didn't really make close friends for at least 4 months. Lack of alcohol might be really annoying, but don't risk it. They will send you back if you get caught, no joke. But definitely be open to new experiences, do things you can't do at home. Like go out to a shooting range or whatever.

People who claim to love IPA's wouldn't know a good beer if it slapped them across the face. Here in portland everyone drinks it because it's all we fucking have. You drink so much of it you eventually start to like it. Any virgin or semi-new beer drinker that tries an IPA and says they like it is a fucking liar.
