Ask a Sydney native of 30 years anything tourist or travel related about coming to Sydney and New South Wales.

Garlic sauce and hommous. BBQ or chilli sauce is also acceptable.

My friend got called a little pussy for asking for sweet chilli at a kebab shop near Castle Hill
>>
>>1065727
Sure Gong is alright. Depends what you're there for.

The blowhole at Kiama is worth the trip down if you're in the area. There's also glow worms in the old train tunnel at Helensburgh via Royal National Park, and you also get to enjoy the scenic drive in.

Wollongong City Beach or North Wollongong Beach/Lagoon is ok, but I would rather travel North to Bar Beach at Newie.

Aaaand there's Jamberoo for people who can control the action (family waterpark).

All in all, Wollongong is worth one day's trip if you have a car. Otherwise, skippable.

Which is better - the shire out north syd?
>>
>>1065760
>the shire or north sydney?

Well if you are travelling, North Sydney would give you better access to jobs in town, they have a train, ferry, and bus services, and more connecting motorways to get you anywhere in Sydney.

The Shire is about 20-30kms South of Sydney, and is... It's culturally very different to the rest of the city. It's very Anglo and has the feel of its own satellite city, where people are born in the area and never move out.

Shire has some really nice beaches and a slower vibe to it. I have friends from overseas that had working holiday visas and had homestays in the Shire and really enjoyed the "Australian" lifestyle.

North Sydney has access to beaches too (Manly up to Palm Beach). There is Ku-ring-gai National Park to go up against Royal National near the Shire. Tourtisty-wise, they are pretty dead even, but North Sydney being so close to the CBD would edge it out for me. Plus McMahon's Point's views of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, and all the trendy restaurants.

> slightly biased, I live in Northern Sydney
>>
>>1065770
Any tips you can give me about Working Holiday Visas?
>>
>>1065792
Really depends on what sort of work you can do and how likely you are to find that work. I had a canadian friend who was here six months and couldnt find work outside of a hostel. Eventually he got frustrated and left.

Worse even, he arrived in Autumn and was idle during Winter which can be a bit rough.

Do your research and look at Seek.com or Gumtree.com for jobs. from Sydney, there's a lot of Australia that's within reach tourist wise for a working holiday maker.
>>
>>1065792
It's shit matey try to work in NZ if you want to do the working holiday visa. Less money but the jobs you get will be better and the people are much friendlier.
>>
>>1065792
>>1065946

Yeah with my experience with WH friends in Sydney, unless you have a degree in something or are willing to do horrible jobs, you won't have a good time.
>>
>>1065717
Best bar street/region for 20 something's?
>>
>>1065951
In town drop into Kings Cross or around King Street Wharf.

Early 30s late 20s go Surry Hills or around York Street
>>
>>1065875
>>1065950
It's better to search for work in other parts of Australia like Brisbane or Adelaide then? I'm also willing to spend some months doing farm work so I can make enough money to fund the rest of my travel
>>
>>1065946
Never thought about this possibility, is the difference between Australia and NZ really that big in terms of money?
>>
>>1065970
I can only really speak for Sydney, but the job market is tough, especially for WH.

As the other dude said, NZ is a good bet for landing work, despite the lower purchasing power.
>>
>>1065968
Farm work is easy to find, but you won't be anywhere near Sydney. Expect to be in North Queensland or regional NSW or VIC at a vineyard or farm.

One friend is currently in Mildura but is lucky to meet some good friends there from her country.

Brisbane or Melbourne would be better destinations job wise. Alternatively. You could land here with a student visa and get your travels done while studying.
>>
>>1065978
>You could land here with a student visa and get your travels done while studying.
I'm a poor south american, I can't maintain myself over there if not working... unfortunately
>>
>>1065981
Sorry to hear that mate.

Lots of Sodamericanos in Bondi enjoying the beach and Eastern Sydney life. Usually housesharing 1-4 per bedroom.

Minimum wage is around $17 per hour pre tax. Keep that in mind when you're looking for work and juggling a budget.
>>
>>1065963

As a 20 something guy from sydney, kings cross is dead. Lockouts killed it. World bar is still going but its just filled with backpackers. Locals head to warehouse parties. Other then that its all backpacker joints.

Hi

How is the job market for european guys with a master degree in science (chemistry)?
What are the requests to enter?

I would like to try to do An experience abroad in a nice country and so I'm looking for that.

Thank you man!

Here's all you need to know. Don't go there, it's shit.

Sincerely Melbourne.

Yeah, I have 2 friends that are enjoying life in Bondi Beach right now. But their suggar daddy is paying it for them, which is not my case :\

Is the Wifi in rural NSW extremely shit?
>>
Just travelled through OZ for 7 months. Started in Perth and hugged the coast southbound all the way to Cairns with a month long stop in Tassie

IMO Melbourne is better than Sydney.

Sydney reminds me of Los Angeles where everyone is just trying way to hard to be "cool" or "hip"

Where as in Melbourne they just were.... Had weeklong free music festivals (St.Kilda) and lots more to do...

Sydney was high priced shops, restaurants and a general nose stuck up attitude and I didn't find that ANYWHERE else in OZ after all the thousands of miles I covered.

Are you wanting to come here as a Perm Resident or WH? Most professional places won't want to hire a WH unless you are some sort of specialist. My brother is genetics/reprod science and is having a tough time finding lab work.

You would be able to find more casual or part time chem work, or something in a hospital, or sales in the industry.

Would you consider work in a mine?
>>
>>1066107
Nonexistant. Even out in Newie it's horrible.
>>
>>1066109
OP here.

Yeah to some extent I would agree with you. But you probably visited only 10% OF Sydney. Melbourne is much smaller, nowhere near the size of Sydney.

Blue Mountains, Northern Beaches, Royal National Park/Bundeena, Inner City, North Shore... How much time did you actually spend in these places?

Everything you would want to do in Melbourne is within 10km of the city.
>>
>>1066072
We've got all of that in Newtown. Our dyke femnazis sydney uni liberal arts grads shit on melbourne's sjws
>>
>>1066104
Hahah I know one guy at work who is "hosting" a backpacker at his place. Good arrangement for both of them.
>>
>>1066213
I don't think that would be a great idea take just a WH for a graduate.
What's the problem with your bro? Where are you from?

Sales or mine aren't bad idea in general. Anyway I'm not english mother tongue and this could be a further problem.

Furthermore do you have any idea about the whole scientific job market in AU?

Thanks for the tips!!

It's not a huge difference but like I said the jobs you'll get will be MUCH better. I lived in a house with a french guy that was working retail and we all made fun of him for having a lame job. I'm in oz right now and would kill for a boring retail job. Best money I've made in oz was on a cattle station but I had to do all the really dangerous jobs and got treated like shit. The south around melbourne is a lot better for foreigners imo. Working in tasmania right now doing hospitality but would go back to nz in a heart beat if I could get another visa. Sydney is pretty cunty but Melbourne is absolutely crawling with hipster douche bags.
>>
>>1065875
Is finding jobs on WH seriously that bad? I want to come over in the next couple of months and I wouldn't mind fruit picking or something like that
>>
>>1065727

It depends what you're coming down for. Beaches are good and there are some decent cafes and things to see but outside that, there isn't a whole lot. If you have a car then it's easier to go check oout some cool nearby stuff e.g Kiama, Thirroul, Berry
>>
>>1066216
There's plenty more to see in the east of Melbourne imo.
I don't really think Sydney is THAT much bigger than Melbourne. I mean it's like 40km to the eastern edge of the city. I'm not sure how wide Sydney is.
>>
>>1066241
Can only comment for Sydney. STEM industry is growing, but the jobs aren't.
>>
>>1066286
In Sydney, sure is. Can't comment for other cities.
>>
>>1066308
Melbourne outside of the city has nothing. Places like werribee are on the fringe and barely worth the visit. Same deal out east.

Sydney has the more diverse landscape and more multicultural districts within the city, plus all the landmarks. For international tourists, sydney is the go.

Melbourne is done in a weekend.
>>
>>1066706
I know you can't comment but could you take a wild guess on say Perth?
>>
Ameribro in Sydney here

Finding a job is a total breeze as long as you are not completely incompetent.

I've gotten jobs all over the citys sickest cocktail bars with less than 2 years experience behind the bar by doing rockstar interviews and writing great cover letters. Seek is your friend, thats where the best jobs are posted. If you are looking in hospo join the Sydney Bartender Exchange on Facebook.

If not hospo then Retail or sails is your only recourse. Dont expect a career offer on a working holiday visa.

Other than that finding a job was a sinch. Check out The Star Casino or any of the Hotels for great Rates (with all my casual penalties I average about 28 per hr).

Just dont be openly drunk anywhere. The alcohol laws here are straight up draconian. If a door man sees you laughing and having a good time in line he wont let you in. no doubles after midnight, no shots after midnight, no whiskys after midnight. But the city itself is legendary. Enjoy
>>
Don't go to Sydney.

>>
>>1067006
That's reassuring thanks, do you think it'll be as easy for someone with no prior barwork?
>>
Can you still score heroin on the street in cabramatta ?

Perth is dying. I wouldn't reccommend it.

Look into Brisbane
>>
>>1067217
You need to get an RSA certificate, which is about $130 and a days study. Done.
>>
>>1067297
That's what I'm seeing. Friends in materials science, health sci, civ engineering, software, math, etc aren't seeing many new jobs, but the aussie govt keeps saying we're investing in it...
>>
>>1067225
Nope. Closest you'll get are some bad dim sims. Cabra is a completely different place to 20 years ago when I was a kid.
>>
>>1068213
RSA is definitely necessary, RSG if you want to work in some gamblingindustry. But you can get RSA online for under $50, takes a few hours, still teaches everything you need to know.
>>
>>1068221
no way they changed it up and the cheapest you can do online is around 105 takes 3 hours and you will almost never have to apply it unless youre removing a drunk person.

>Melbourne outside of the city has nothing

I found the some of the inner and middle suburbs more interesting to explore

>Melbourne is done in a weekend

You're an idiot
>>
>>1065717
kind of a random question, but a few years back I bought some pedicabs (rickshaws) from a guy in Adelaide and spent a summer making a living taking fares in city centre. Had an awesome time!

Anyways I sold out to one of my business partners who turned around and sold out to a local courier. Apparently the guy knew his shit and turned it into a mini empire, apparently he's raking in cash.

Was just wondering if you've seen these bikes around and if so, how prevalent are they? If so, what is their reputation like? Are they indeed raking in big bucks?

I'm a US college student who literally decided today to spend my Spring Break in Sidney instead of Japan, where should I stay, what should I see, and why should I beware of? Thanks my good friend.
>>
>>1071997
This is a bad idea. It's too far for such a short break. You'll be seriously jetlagged for two days of that time and will spend about three days traveling there and back. Go to the Caribbean or Central America for spring break. Go to Australia when you have at least three weeks (ideally more). And don't travel that far and only go to Sydney.

Carryout not delivery.

it's $5 at domino's before 9:00pm.

Why is it so cheap? It'd be $8.99 in the US

Wait did you get one of those little personal-pan pizzas for children? I'm an American with a big appetite, get on my level.

I take that back bought one tonight and it was $10.14 including tax

All basic pizzas at all chains are $5 australian, have been for sometime.

Australia is cheap to eat regardless what people say, but a lot of our restaurants are priced through the roof for no fucking reason. Stick to the cheap eats and you wont go wrong normally.
>>
>>1073422
Australia is cheap to eat regardless what people say

For years everybody, including Australians, have been telling me that goods like food all costs significantly more than the U.S. and because of this I moved it to the bottom of my list as I assumed I'd be too poor to get by.
>>
Can I learn how to speak Austrialan? Or indonesian?

I am interested in moving there (from sweden) to work. My question is: how would I go about finding a job and someplace to live?

Where the fuck do you eat? Basic pizzas are about $12 most places these days.
