I've lived in the bay area for 10+ years and go into SF to screw around and get good food all the time. What kind of stuff are you guys into? Off the top of my head there is a LOT of good coffee and some good pastries/bakeries if you're into that, and at least 4 really cool museums. Do you want to know the touristy stuff, or have you guys already done that?

Hi from SF, and welcome. As far as vegan food is concerned, you will have no problems at all--we have more than a few all-veg restaurants, most all- or mostly-vegan, and nearly everywhere will have at least one vegan thing to eat. Herbivore, on either Divisadero in the Western Addition (between the Haight and Alamo Square, basically) or the Mission (Valencia and... 18th? 20somethingth? Between the 16th St and 24th St BART stations somewhere), is popular, reasonably tasty, all-vegan, and cheap. Valencia is also a major bar (and restaurant) corridor, so dozens of places to get drunk within stumbling distance. Lucky Creation, on Washington at Sansome in Chinatown, is one of a number of vegan Chinese places. Dive hole in the wall, but tasty food and no animal stuff. There are a few other veg places in and around Chinatown, and Asian vegetarian food (apart from Indian) is basically always vegan. Easy to get drunk in Chinatown and adjacent North Beach, too, in dives or tourist traps, as well as a few local gems. And if you don't know SF that well, that region is definitely worth a wander. Yes, Grant Avenue is mostly tourist garbage (although Li Po is a fun dive bar that sometimes has weird shows in its gross little basement), but Stockton and side streets have some good local weirdness. And North Beach has a lot of Financial District douchebags, and strip joints, but it's also got views history, and character, and an interesting underbelly.

Ocha has vegan Japanese. I don't like it but others do. Millennium used to be our fancy vegan restaurant, but it moved to Rockridge in Oakland (on BART, pretty good 'hood if increasingly yuppie). And there's a new vegan burger joint in the Haight-Ashbury, but I've never been.

Sorry, brain fart. The vegan Japanese place is Cha-Ya. Ocha is a pretty good local Thai chain that probably has a vegan menu item or two.

I've personally done the touristy stuff but I dunno if boyfriend has.. I'll probably do the clamchowder on the wharf thing for him at night or something. (while I stare and eat carrots -_-)

Any nice bars to go to or avoid? not into cluby or blaring music, more like sit back and chat type bars?
Also is there any part that I should be afraid of? Like, is there an area that is super sketchy after dark or etc? Or like, whatever you do don't stay in a hotel in _____ because you'll die even if it's just 60$ a night sorta thing? On tour he stayed in the dire parts of Oakland with a friend so since the friend grew up there it wasn't too bad but he could have easily landed in a sketchy spot with all his gear without his friend's help. Every city has it's sketchy areas, but sometimes there's some worth mentioning. (Skidrow in LA unless you grew up there after dark u will def get kill by the people or the cops)

Also anything worth mentioning that we should "absolutely" do?
I guess some coffee places that are known to be good would be great, really would hate to have to drink shitty Starbucks because I can't find a cafe that has decent coffee.

The anon who posted about the vegan restaurants probably knows more about cool bars and places to chill than I do (aside from two kind of weird examples), but at the very least I can tell you the Tenderloin is the place to avoid. Super sketchy for sure, night or day. The Marina and Cow Hollow are kind of the opposite of that, with tons of tech people and college kids eating at nice restaurants and going to bars.

Two of the coolest and most unique museums in the city are the Academy of Sciences (two of the coolest things being an indoor rainforest contained in a dome and lots of animal exhibits) and the Exploratorium (with hundreds of hands on mini-exhibits and art installations to mess around with). Both are really cool in their own way, with the Academy of Sciences being the more "serious" one and the Exploratorium having a kind of grown up Bill Nye feel to it. If you're there on the right day both have adults only cocktail nights. I really cannot tell you how much fun it is to walk around a museum without a single annoying kid or school trip crowding you out. It feels kind of like what kids imagine adulthood to be lol. They close the place down and the grown-ups get to walk around with alcohol and play with all the toys.

On the topic of museums, the Musée Mécanique is extremely unique. It's a museum of classic arcade machines, and you can actually play them. Classic pinball, Zoltar type machines, old digital cabinets, and weirder stuff. There's also a Ripley's Believe it or Not on Fisherman's Wharf, but it's not super entertaining unless you're a kid or really into freakshow stuff. And if you only have two days in San Francisco you definitely shouldn't make a destination out of Fisherman's Wharf. It's really touristy.

In terms of coffee, Sightglass and Four Barrel are both really good. Both of them are known for using almond milk, and Four Barrel actually has an entire bar thing for pourovers.

Go to Berkeley and get a beet burger from Source Mini. There used to be an SF location but they closed because of SF business requirements. If you don't want to travel too far, Plant Cafe has a good beet burger too, but its not as good. Also Berkeley has a Saturns Cafe, which has the best vegan pancakes I've ever had.

Herbivore is pretty good. Golden Era is my favorite asian vegan place, but I've never had Cha-Ya. Dante's Urban Fish is pretty good, especially if you want something spicy. It specializes in vegan and pescatarian food, so if your bf isn't vegan he can get what he wants. Tons of vegan options in SF, so don't worry.

As far as museums, my favorite is the Cal Academy of Science. Has an aquarium and an indoor rainforest with cool rainforest birds and butterflies. Pic was taken there. Where is your bf playing?

Here's the pourover bar! Four Barrel is also seconds away from the SF armory, which is both a cool historic building and the HQ of a really popular fetish porn company. You can take tours if you want to see what that's all about. Sightglass is in kind of a bad area (though not Tenderloin level bad), so be careful about that. I promise the coffee is worth it.

Philz coffee and blue bottle are both well loved local chains, although I've never tried Philz and blue bottle can be overhyped. It's really hard to read the reviews and not expect the best cup of coffee ever, which is only going to lead to disappointment. Both would be way the hell above Starbucks though.

Trouble Coffee in the Sunset does really good french toast if you want a sit down cafe, but it's waaay out there unless you're in the Sunset for some reason. Le Marais in the Marina does phenomenal croissants at the very least, and their lattes and espresso are incredible. I'm not sure if they use almond milk, though. I've never been there, but there's a place called the Mill that sells Four Barrel coffee and really expensive toast. Some people love it and others think it has a Portlandia vibe.

Bereka coffee is near Le Marais, and it's one of those "only seven things on the menu and they all kick ass" kind of places. They have weird hours and are pretty much the definition of a hole in the wall, but the coffee is really good if you like it black and strong.

If you're willing to drive out to Mill Valley, Equator coffee has incredible espresso, lattes, and mochas. They're one of my favorite places for coffee.

There's even a cat cafe in San Francisco! I have no idea what the coffee is like, but if you or your bf like that stuff it's there to check out.
