Do not spend more than one day in Nice/Cannes. Do visit in order to see the place, but you'll realize it's shit quite fast.
I live here. Montpellier is an awesome vibrant city, everything Nice/Cannes is not. Marseille is a must. Carcassone is beautiful.
And if you're into nature, take a car and drive into the backlands. I recomment Mercantour, because that's what I know of (also mountains), but the other areas are probably nice as well.

Again, Nice and Cannes are not worth it for a longer time. One day max. It's overpriced, uninteresting and full of rich brits and russians.

I'd basically go along with this, and add that IMO Aix-en-Provence is greatly overrated.

Marseille has great character, Be sure to eat bouillabaisse at one of the places around the port. Maybe go out and see the Le Corbusier building too (easy to get to on public transport)

From colourful markets (like Noailles market), to the Calanques (a natural area of big cliffs falling into the sea), from the Panier area (the oldest place of the town) to the Vieux-Port (old harbor) and the Corniche (a road along the sea), Marseille has definitely a lot to offer.
