Singaporefag with UK citizenship here. I am thinking about finding a job in the English countryside. It really appeals to me as it's very different from where I am now. I've lived in homestay hotels in the European countryside and I loved it. I don't know if I am romanticising life in the countryside too much and I am wondering if I will get bored of it in the future.

Youll get bored fast.

short answer - it varies greatly from place to place., depending on local character, traditions, activities, social makeup, and so on. Probably different countryside places in England differ from one another to a far greater extent (precisely because of their relative isolation and distinct histories) than do large cities.

I'd say: go for it - but do your research first

It's pleasant, though of course you're very dependent on your car. It really depends what you want from your life. Just remember that the weather in the UK is pretty bad most of the time; it can get a bit grim in the countryside.

My parents live in the middle of nowhere (in Ireland), if you have any questions about country living you can ask me I guess... Personally it drives me fucking crazy having to plan everything, not being able to just walk out to the shop or to meet people at whatever time I want, but I do appreciate the peace and quiet.

As a child, Singapore was my heaven for the 2 years I spent there...

After that, we moved to the U.K and The United Kingdom became my hell for the next 10 years.

Life there is not the same as a holiday there.

You should probably elaborate on that a little... OP and his situation could be completely different from yours

It really depends on what you like doing on a day to day basis, and how you like to socialise. In rural England, you're in a small pond and everyone around the area knows of you if they don't know you. Basically, you become part of a community, which is either a comfy feel if you go for that, or an awkward feel if you prefer being almost invisible in a city. You'll have a local pub where most people know each other, and you'll either get to know everyone or turn into a British unibomber.

When I lived somewhere rural for a while I always walked to work along a footpath - glorious walk and nice exercise. One day I popped into a shop I'd never been in before, and was greeted with "Oh it's you! The young man who walks to work from <x> every day!"

I thought it was a bit freaky - prefer the anonymity of city life.

Hmm, research around online, but it is definitely a question of interpreting clues (and not overinterpreting them), rather than dealing with hard facts, mostly.

Three online resources that might help a bit, two very unofficial, one very official.

Police website https://www.police.uk/ - go to "find your neighbourhood", type in name of a town, then info will come up showing quantity of crimes committed, type of crime, and location at which they occurred. You can zoom in, and select different months and years worth of data.

Obviously there are loads of other factors to consider (local council - at town or parish level especially - websites maybe too) , but they can be some kind of help I think

The unofficial: "The Knowhere Guide" - offkey guide to towns, written in a kind of wiki manner,

Some stuff is out of date, and by definition not everything is reliable, but you might get some ideas. http://www.knowhere.co.uk/
(Similar, better known, but nowhere near as reliable is http://www.ilivehere.co.uk/ - but take a lot of what is written there with a hefty pinch of salt. Where is is most reliable is in singling out specifically bad neighbourhoods in the towns, rather than giving an accurate portrayal of towns as a whole)

Depends on your personality and what you enjoy doing. I Live in the rural south west and i love it, but then i prefer walking in fields and livestock etc. if you love things like clubbing, art galleries etc you really need to be in a city for that.
Also if you are not white, you will stand out.
