There's plenty in the woods, but unless you want to choke on something grown by the NK government, I suggest you get them at home.

Two questions here;

1. Should I buy the JR pass if I'm going to be in Tokyo for 9 days and take a RT train ride to Kyoto for 2 days?

2. Does the Tokyo Metro have a reloadable metro card? Like the ones in NYC, Seoul, Beijing, etc. If so, where at? Everywhere? Major stations?
>>
>>1054873
Just buy the subway pass
>>
>>1054873
use hyperpedia or google maps to find out how much your fare would be between tokyo and kyoto (you need two tickets usually) and then see if it's more or less than the full JR pass. Around tokyo tickets aren't much and you're probably going ot be fine with a shinkansen ticket and a Suica card in tokyo
>>
>>1054873
>1. Should I buy the JR pass if I'm going to be in Tokyo for 9 days and take a RT train ride to Kyoto for 2 days?
Yes, usually pays off for a RT

Yeah you can get the glorious Suica or the not so glorious Pasmo at pretty much any vendor within train stations and at the airport

Never thought I would go to Japan but I cannot get a Chinese visa in Russia so I will take the train / ferry to Japan and apply in Tokyo. I will be there for Christmas.

What is tinder like in Japan if going after 25-30yo girls? Should I rent a private room / apartment or will girls take you back to their place? How easy is it to get laid?

I figure I should make a go of it, I always thought Japanese girls were cute and I'll be there a couple of weeks...

What about for new years specifically? What does one do in Tokyo for New Years Day?
>>
>>1055005
Lots of Japanese people visit family or stay up and go to a shrine. It's not all that religious, more just a tradition thing and something to do to go out and see people.

Most years I'd go to a countdown party or something(standing outside in the cold isn't my idea of a good time), though one year a friend came to visit from the states, so we went to Tokyo. We ended up at some bar that turned out to be the headquarters for some motorcycle club and ended up getting smashed with them all night.

If you're adventurous and gregarious just wander around looking for a good time; it's pretty easy to party crash.
>>
>>1054999
If you are going to be in Tokyo for any of the two weeks starting January 10, you could go visit the sumo tournament. Top row of seats doesn't look too expensive, if you are willing to line up early for a ticket.

Any recs for internet cafes with overnight rooms that are basically a giant bed? Looking to stay cheap in Tokyo/Akiba.
>>
Are there any well known and preferably not so well known places between Kobe and Hiroshima? What's worth stopping at and exploring? I'll be traveling through in January.

Also is it worth ducking down into Shikoku? I've been told it's pretty much just a few castles and amazing udon (which I do love). Maybe there are some cooler off the beaten path type things down there.
>>
>>1055086
Yeah, don't.
Pick a cheap regular hotel within walking distance of shinjuku station. That will get you anywhere in japan in no time at all, without paying tourist trap prices.

What is tinder like in Japan if going after 25-30yo girls? Should I rent a private room/apartment or will girls take you back to their place? How easy is it to get laid?

I'd say the chances of you getting laid off of Tinder in Japan--in a span of two weeks--provided you are a decent looking normie, is maybe 15-20% chance? If you want a more sure thing for getting laid, and don't mind older jukujo/milfs, try JapanCupid or even Craigslist. I've banged a couple older j-women off of JapanCupid.

Girls will take you back to her place if she has one probably. Really, just get a love hotel room. Either for a couple hours or overnight depending on the situation.

It's not hard to get laid in Japan if you're a normie, really. Japanese women are not sexually conservative. You can thank the Edo period and the lack of moral aversions to sexuality in both Shintoism and Buddhism. It's a different story than in Korea, with the Confucian and Christian influence.

Just don't assume something will happen in two weeks, especially if you're using Tinder and not taking advantage of drunkeness.

>>1055042
>The majority of girls that are not married, live with their parents.

I do not know the hard numbers, but I'm sure it's just a plurality and not an overwhelming majority like in Korea. It is common for young unmarried adults to live with their parents in Japan, but it is also common for them NOT too. For those who do live with their parents, this is more out of convenience or cheapness than it is because of moral reasons or something. Japan is smallish and connected by trains. It's kind of a no brainer for a student attending uni in Tokyo to live with her parents if they live in Tokyo.

Anyway, to the guy who was asking about Tinder in Japan, it's not really an issue either way. She will have a place or you will (provided you're not in a shared hostel room or something) or else you can just get a love hotel room. If she lives with her parents it's a non issue really.
>>
I was thinking of last minute booking a trip to japan over christmas/new years. How is getting accommodation at this time of the year?

Also, if I wanted to go skiing in, say, Hakuba, is that something I need to have booked well in advance?
>>
>>1055101
Thanks dude, I had no idea love hotels were a thing, also if it's only a 20% chance of scoring I'm not going to bother paying for a private room, those odds aren't good enough for me.
>>
>>1055127
they're a thing mostly because it's a lot more common for young adults to live with their parents there.
>>
>>1055128
Mmmm, maybe probably a part of it, but honestly I think the biggest reason they're a thing is because of how huge prostitution is in Japan.
>>
>>1055133
In what way is prostitution huge?
>>
>>1055135
Haha oh man, let me count the ways. Prostitution is more or less quasi legal in Japan which is obviously going to up its popularity that much more. By law, only vaginal intercourse is illegal to pay for but of course they skirt around this.

There are many many kinds of sex establishments in Japan. Maybe the most famous are "Soap Lands." Here, all you're promised on paper is for a girl to lather up and basically rub her body on yours to get you off, but generally speaking, you can do that and have regular sex in Soap Lands, there's usually a bed in the room.

"Pink Salons" are blowjob joints. Basically you go in and get a blowjob from a girl. They don't offer private rooms. Think of like an office cubicle set up with loud club music playing to simulate privacy.

"Delivery Health" is escort service. This where a lot of the love hotels come in. You call the place and they dispatch a girl for you.

There's also other shit like "Encounter Cafes." I'm not exactly sure how they work but I think it's like you go in and pick a girl and then go to a love hotel after you choose her at the place.

Happening Bars and Couple Kissas aren't really prostitution, but they are basically swinger/hook up bars where people go to couple swap or whatever.

Apart from that you can kind old fashioned street walkers outside many stations.
>>
>>1055148
Also Hostess Bars. Although generally speaking, hostess bars are not sex establishments, it's literally just paying for chit chat and for the girl to pour you drinks and stuff. But I'm sure a fair share of hostesses end up in love hotels too.
>>

If you go sumo its totally cool to sit with your fucking giant telescopic SLR lens. But remember the tourney starts at about 10am with all the juniors and undercards fighting. The good stuff happens at about 3pm and onwards. Ryogoku museum is pretty meh I'd pass on it when Akiba is three stops away.

I have a 10 hour layover at Narita on Thursday. What do? I'm probably just going to stay in Narita town because I don't want to spend an hour + each way to go into Tokyo. Any suggestions on what to do?

Also, how much money should I bring with me? I don't want to go exchanging more money than I need to. Likely just going to eat and check out a temple or some shit. Would love to go to a bath house but I'm covered in tattoos so that's likely out of the question.

I'm a fag and posted this in /jp/ because I forgot there were more than 5 boards here.
copypasted:
I'm planning a trip with a group of friends. We're looking at about one year from now but we want to have a rough itinerary so we can do some cost estimates and see how much money we'll need.

My hopes are that we can go to a decent number of places without a rigid schedule (i.e. being able to relax and even stay the whole day at a location if we happen to really like it).
I'm thinking about one week not including travel time but this is my first time traveling so I'll defer to those with experience in the matter.

Thoughts? Looking for recommendations for restaurants, shops, locations, best time of year, and any other general advice to prepare.

a pastebin would've been nice to see but whatever.

I'm an IT professional in the US, and I want to move to Japan. My eventual goal is to renounce US citizenship and obtain Japanese citizenship. I understand this is a decade-long process, and I am okay with that BUT:

1. What is the corporate atmosphere towards IT people in Japan? I don't think I've ever seen any allusion to the IT industry in any pop culture. Are IT people treated like autists, like some in the US are treated?

2. If I leave for Japan in 2019, I will be making about 90k USD by then, will this salary carry over? I am absolutely willing to take a pay cut, but only if I can still afford a house or living arrangements larger than a 1br.

3. I am actively learning Japanese and will be taking biannual trips to the country before I move, each about 2.5 weeks at a time. I have friends in Tokyo that I know will help show me around.
>>
>>1055265
Narita is a lovely town, with 10 hours you might consider going to Tokyo as well but yeah it might end up being a bit hectic. In Narita itself, the thing mostly worth checking out is of course the Temple and the surrounding gardens (might be lucky to catch some autumn colors, but not sure about that). Leading up to the temple there's of course that street with all the typical Japanese stores and restaurants. You can buy some souvenirs there and try the local specialty eel. If you want to experience something typically Japanese, try to go gambling at a pachinko parlor, which I'm sure they'll have in Narita as well. You could also consider taking a local train a few stops away from Narita towards Tokyo to see some Japanese countryside and rice fields (though there's probably not going to be much rice there now)
>>1055282
Well are you looking for plans for one week? Or more? What does not including travel time mean? Just the in between city traveling time or the time where you fly into the country. Well for one week, I would suggest just staying in Tokyo, with a side trip to Nikko/Kamakura/Hakone etc. since it really isn't much time. If you can stretch it by another week or so, you could also go see Kyoto/Osaka imo. Best time of the year for many I think would be May or October, when it's relatively warm but not oppressively hot or rainy yet, but this is going to depend on your preferences however. I personally like the unbearable heat so my favorite time to travel would be August, if you prefer chilled temperature, you could consider Christmas/New Years etc.
>>
>>1055296
each city offers something different. Tokyo is of course the biggest, most bustling city but that doesn't mean the other ones are dead. I've been to Fukuoka and while it does have a more laidback feeling compared to Tokyo, it's still a city of 1.5 million people. Same with Kyoto. If you want something along the lines of Tokyo, but cheaper and smaller, I would consider Osaka though
>>
>>1055294
not including travel time as in 9 days i guess. with the first and last day just being going and coming back.

our stay there I think should be based around how many places we feel we really want to visit so I want to make a list of places and a rough schedule then decide how many days we'll be there
>>
Gonna say this again since I said it near the end of the last thread.

When an English school asks for a bachelor's is because the working visa requires so they can bring you into Japan or is that the company wants to hire people with a degree. Saying this because I can get a working visa without a degree.
>>
>>1055292
1. It's just a normal boring job to people there. You're basically considered a next-gen pencil pusher.

2. Absolutely not. America is known for unusually high salaries in the and Japan is known for unusually low salaries in the same field. Whether you'll be able to afford something more than a 1br apartment depends largely on where you live and what kind of position you can land though. Just keep in mind if you're relying only on landing an advanced high paying job out the gate, you may be forced into the dreaded endless overtime. It's nowhere near as common as people make it out to be, but if that job is vacant and nobody wants to move into internally there's probably a good reason why.

3. Cool. It might be a good idea to stay like a month to really get acclimated to daily life there if possible.

Also, a common suggestion is to try to get employed at an international company with offices in Tokyo then try to get transferred there. This is usually kinda pointless advice since it takes years but since you seem to be prepared to make this a long term gradual change, that would probably be the best course of action. Typically international companies are subject to a lot less of the work culture garbage than Japanese companies and employees are paid a bit better and if for whatever reason you ever decide to return home, you'll still have a safety net.
>>
>>1055229
Not that guy.

I like foods that are seasonal. Gets you in the mood of the season. Is nabe year round?
>>
>>1055304
2. I'm cool with making only half of what I make here, my savings would probably be enough to rent a house for a few years.

3. I plan to, but I have a max of 4.5 weeks of PTO at my company.

4. My company is international -and we do have a Japanese office. I'm trying my best to work my way into a position in that office, in the future.

>Is the Robot Restaurant worth the price?

It's a rip off tourist trap but it's still worth it I think. You're paying to see a show. It's campy and pretty crazy. Still for the price you could basically see Kabuki or Noh if you wanted to so that's something to keep in mind if you're looking to experience more traditional culture.

>>1054959
Not a teacher but roughly... (These are including only jobs that only require a bachelor's. University jobs are the best but generally require a master's).

Pretty much anything else. Although I've heard there are some decent mom and pop eikaiwas.

Gas Panic is meme status as a terrible sausage fest. It's in Shibuya not Roppongi. Try Atom (Shibuya). Womb is alright. Muse is kind of more hipster.

>>1055230
They're different things really. Different vibe. Hostess bars are MUCH more expensive than maid cafes. Also, maids generally don't speak English either.

>>1055292
Pretty much what this guy said--
>>1055304

I will add that you should understand the difference between "permanent residence" and citizenship. I think you're alluding to permanent residence. Citizenship would be more than a decade long process. Citizenship is almost impossible to obtain as a foreigner. And if you end up doing it, you'd have to renounce your US citizenship. There's no point really, it's not worth it. Permanent residence is basically the same as citizenship except you can't vote. Big deal.

>>1055320
>What are some good locations for hentai shops in Tokyo?

Akihabara has several stores that carry tons of dirty manga.

Kyoto really has very little of anything outside of the temples and shrines. Osaka and even Nara are much better places to spend your nights and even days once you get tired of temples
>>
>>1055308
Sounds good then man. Best of luck. Also be aware that getting a house there as a foreigner is a bit difficult. Not impossible, but I don't think I've heard of anyone getting a house without being married to a Japanese citizen and having them do most of the work, or something to that effect.
>>1055342
I tend to agree with this person about renouncing your citizenship as well, but you'll have plenty of time to decide once you're there.
>>
>>1055342
No theres a gas panic in both Shibuya and Roppongi as well as the Gas Panic owned line. The one in Shibuya is terrible, despite the decent music and always have a 4-1 guy to girl ratio. The one in Roppongi can be a litle better but not usually. Line club used to be good once upon a time, the music and djs are still great but people just don't go like they used to. However whenever I go the ratio is usually pretty good its just not many people are dancing because there aren't that many people there.

Jumanji for some reason stays packed but has easily the worst music of any club in Roppongi
>>
>>1055354
Also Atom is terrible but not as terrible as Womb. They aren't good clubs, they are just big clubs. I don't know how good the electronic music is, but I do know the rap music is terrible. I don't understand how people can enjoy the electronic music floors because people just seem to stare at the dj, sometimes jumping up and down and never actually dancing with anyone
>>
>>1055355
I just like Atom because you can still find gyaru there and I like gyaru.

>being a snob

Durr everything is bad, I'm such a hipster.

If you don't like hiphop that's a preference. It doesn't make the place bad, just not for you. It kind of depends on your reason for going to a club. If you're actually a musicky person who wants to see certain DJs and shit and a music "snob" then yeah you'll probably be more picky.

If you're just going to have a good time, get drunk, hook up, etc. they're not bad.

Thinking about taking a 2 week trip by myself in mid-may of 2016. I'd want to see Tokyo, Hakone, and Kyoto during that time. Because of the fact that I'm really into anime the station would be a 10 minute walk, I'd bring staying in Akihabara.

Probably going to get a pocket wifi and a JPass.

How reliable is the luggage forwarding service? I'd only use it for Tokyo>Kyoto and back but I'm wary about losing it.

Do you think 2 weeks is good for what I have planned? I'd be in Tokyo for around 10 days and Kyoto for 4 (one of those Tokyo days for Nara). I'm really into temples and just sightseeing. Any tips on small districts of Tokyo that are fun to visit by ones self? I'm thinking 2-3 days for Akihabara so I can see everything, and I mean everything.

Also, I'm 19 years old and my mother is worried sick about me going alone. Neither her or my dad have ever been out of the country and they're afraid something is going to happen to me. I'm sure I'll be fine because of the vast amount of resources out there and the fact I'll be connected to the Internet, but is there anything else that can reassure them that it will be fine and I'll be safe?

Thank you for the help, anons.

Pic slightly related, I think it was taken in Akihabara.

Are you planning on staying in multiple different places around Tokyo in your 10 days?
Because you can just stay anywhere on the Yamanote line, and get to pretty much anywhere in less than half an hour.
>>
>>1055408
I was thinking just Aki as a home base, but I'm not completely closed off to that idea. It'd be a hassle to keep moving and like you said, I can get around quickly.

I have two weeks to explore Japan in February. Main goals are: great food, relaxation, and seeing a few sights. What 3 cities would you recommend to someone with a rail pass in this time outside of Toyko, which I'll likely spend 6-7 days in?

On the dock right now are:
Kyoto
Hakone - For hot springs
Kobe - For food. Probably a 1 day stop at most.

I wouldn't mind being convinced otherwise, just leave a reason why.

>>

In Winter nabe is the go. Nabe is just a hotpot stew thing. It is tradition that everyone has nabe of some sort before the spring. Miso in the north, shoyu around kanto, no idea about what is more popular kansai and south.

Can't go wrong with Chanko though. It has. A bit of everything.

Depends if they provide accomm, otherwise you'll have it really tough. If you are a native english speaker you could find some work as a proof reader for uni students or an agency, depending on how good you are for about $15-40 an hour to supplement your income.
>>
>>1055439
Yeah you will be ok. Does that include your jr pass and accomm?

I would look at a daily allowance of maybe $30-60 per day for food and shits and giggles. So just factor out your accom and travel expenses, and a fund to buy souvenirs. If you go into Yodabashi you will definitely find something awesome to buy

Would anyone ever recommend a capsule hotel over a hostel? I'll need a room tomorrow and don't care if it's cheap in Tokyo. Any recommendations?
>>
>>1055366
The point is I like rap and there are like no clubs in Japan that play anything almost close to decent besides Line. When it was 99 it would stay packed with cute girls. But after the police shut it down there really is no place to go anymore. Rap moves quickly and its just annoying hearing all the best songs from 2 years ago with none of the new stuff when I go to Shibuya, which is one of the main reasons I stopped going. Camelot would sometimes play semi-new stuff but not often enough to pay the Shibuya club premium.

The last straw with me for Atom was when they had hip-hop night with a new dj every hour or so on the different floors and they all basically had the same playlist filled to the brim with old music And not even the late to the boat hipster kind of playlist where its filled with a lot of good classic hip-hop from the early 90s, that really shouldn't be played at the club, but atleast shows the guy has a deep interest. Just general club rap that is just played out. They all had nearly identical playlists. I heard that "You got a 20 dollar bill put your hands up" song like 5 times.

If you know of a decent place that plays rap please let me know because I would love to check it out, instead of just getting shit faced and dancing as a couple with my Japanese friend at Line who also can't stand listening to the old stuff
>>
>>1055409
Akihabara is basically completely shut down at night unless you want to go to girl's bars. A home base should have things to do at night
>>
>>1055459
Theres no reason to stay in a capsule hotel unless you just want to tell people you did.
>>
>>1055427
It depends how small the tattoo and location. Some places allow bandages on tattoos. A friend has an X and O on their ankles and they were never stopped at any onsens.
>>
>>1055448
Nope, that's strictly spending money. I'd like to treat myself to nice meals though.
>>1055465
I didn't know that. What would you recommend as a home base? I'm not exactly a 'night life' person, but I'd like to go out and experience some of it.

I could just take the train to other places at night though, no? Or would that not be wise in the case where I stay out late and the trains close?
>>
>>1055302
Well if it's really just a week, suggested places would be the aforementioned Tokyo and side trips, Kyoto, Osaka and maybe Hiroshima if you want to go full turbo zig zag mode across the country
>>1055320
Akihabara obviously
>>1055346
there's a night life in Kyoto as well, but it's not as big as in Osaka of course. Still significantly bigger than in Nara though.
>>1055485
Shinjuku/Shibuya are the most alive places at night, but I've never experienced stayin there. I choose Asakusa last time, which was relatively quiet but exploring the temples and shit at night was fun. Still, it's pretty much on the other end of Shibuya/Shinjuku so if you really consider going out, I'd choose somewhere close to there.

>Or would that not be wise in the case where I stay out late and the trains close?

Well since the last train runs at around 0:00, you're gonna be stranded if you miss that one and want to go home, at which point you can decide to either stay at a manga kissa or 24/7 Karaoke or pay a the relatively expensive taxi fare to get home (I'd recommend the former)
>>
>>1055086
I stayed in an overnight cafe last week and it really isn't worth it. They played the same smooth jazz track on loop all night and then someone arrived about 4.30 whose snore sounded like a dying animal.

Capsule hotels, however, are awesome.

I have a question related to this. I'm a foreigner and currently in Tokyo (shibuya) and I've traveled all around the Jr Yamanote line this past week. When I was in roppingi and shinjuku at night EVERY other block a Nigerian came up to me and my friend and tried to get us to follow them to a titty bar" they would literally just come up to us and start asking us if we want to see titties or have sex. They were verrrry aggressive. Of course we turned them down and later I met up with a Japanese American friend who told me that they are scammers who will get you into there clubs for free or give you a free drink then either drug you and steal your money or will block you from leaving the club and make you pay hundreds of dollars to leave. He said a few of his Korean friends who spoke English had fallen for the trap.

Considering how safe and orderly Japan is I was wondering are these dudes employed by yakuza to basically only target foreigners ( since the Japanese people seemed to have no idea what the Nigerians are saying and the Nigerians obviously don't target Japanese)?
>>
>>1055487
>Akihabara obviously

Well yeah, I was wondering if anybody had any specific ones. I'm fine with wandering, but I was wondering if there were any recommendations.
>>
>>1055496
Mandarake has a pretty good selection and Melon Books is a store that specializes in Doujinshi and Hentai stuff. They have a branch in Akihabara as well as far as I remember
>>
>>1055491
Not necessarily, they are operating mostly on the edge of Japanese law, essentially they are aggresively suggesting you patronize a bar. That is not a crime in of itself it is the person's fault if they are a beta and cannot say no. Once inside the whole free drink thing is common and is a result of the victim not being aware that prices should always be posted or made available beforehand. That scam is illegal, but rarely prosecuted, club owners are banking on you feeling to me arrested that you visited a club and were stupid enough to fall for the oldest trick in the book. Drugging almost never happens it is so rare that when it does there is national media attention. Finally some bars owned by Yakuze however you likely wouldn't be able to distinguish it from a non yakuza bar as it is not like some hive of scum and villainy.
>>

>Girlie bars in Akihabara

News to me. I thought it was all pretty much just enjo kosai.

>>1055491
Clip joints are a reality in Japan, and they are not just run by Africans. Japanese guys will have Japanese guys doing the same thing to them. I know for a fact you are exaggerating about them being "verrrrry aggressive" because they just aren't. The most "aggressive" of them will follow you for a few paces and then promptly leave. I had a guy ask me if I was lost and needed any help coming out of Roppongi station, but he just backed off after I told him firmly and confidently that I was not and just waiting for my friend. (Basically I looked like an easy mark. White guy, checking my phone).

>Considering how safe and orderly Japan is I was wondering are these dudes employed by yakuza to basically only target foreigners

That is not the case. Generally speaking they run their own places.

>(since the Japanese people seemed to have no idea what the Nigerians are saying and the Nigerians obviously don't target Japanese)?

That is not the case. They do target Japanese. The African touts can speak Japanese.

>>1055502
>essentially they are aggresively suggesting you patronize a bar. That is not a crime in of itself

Japanese call this 客引き (kyakuhiki) and it's more or less a crime in some areas. I know a woman who works part time at a hostess bar. The Mama-san of the place she works at was recently arrested for it. There was an ordinance a while back to actively stop the practice in Kabuki-cho, but it's basically been a non-starter and nothing has been done really.
>>
>>1055516
I'm not exaggerating in the least. I was with two other obvious foreigner friends and the Nigerians all traveled in packs of 3 or so. A couple of guys did ask if we were lost and needed help( we were all looking for a good ramen spot on our phones) they weren't angry or mean as you say but they were very aggressive literally shouting" hey bros do you want titties in your face? Want to have good sex?" This was on Friday and Saturday in roppongi and shinjuku. I'm a newyorker so I'm not timid or easily scammed so I obviously told them I wasn't interested quickly. But another group of two or three were always around the corner. I could tell the Japanese guys and girls dressed up outside were there to only talk to the Japanese and like I said it seemed like the Nigerians only talked to foreigners.
>>
>>1055523
You only notice because you don't speak Japanese. The Japanese touts in Shinjuku and the girls who work at the girl's bars are just as agressive, but they ignore you and exclusively go after Japanese. Honestly one of the best things about those waste of time Girl's bars is that they have pushed out all those old lady Korean and Chinese prostitutes, who are actually the most likely to scam you. The guys who work at the bars and clubs in Roppongis go after anyone and everyone because they are fluent in Japanese for the most part. They usually target the women when its still a reasonable hour for people to possibly be sober because a lot of the places are actually legitimate bars and clubs and they do actually want people coming.

Certain places like Jumanji are usually incredibly packed but I've seen the same couple guys out there for 3 years promoting just as hard. 3 years ago it was a pretty dead bar so obviously the tactics do work.

hey anons,

I'm going to rent a pocket wifi for japan, wondering what speed peeps think will be sufficient? Will be used for Google Maps, email, Instagram, iMessage/Facetime Audio

Seems like most providers are on the Y Mobile network with either 21Mbps or 75Mbps options. I'm thinking 21Mbps should be fine (considering I had 12mbps for the last two years here in Aus; now have sweet 100Mbps fibre). 21Mbps also seems decent considering it seems like most providers have a shared 10GB cap on the 75Mbps models (so considering I'll be getting it on the 20th, will probably be stuck at slower speeds until Jan).

If by relatively short you mean 30 minutes to an hour on the train to anywhere interesting and you have to leave Tokyo well before last train if you want to make it back to your place without using a taxi. Theres some things to do but its no Tokyo and its far enough away from Tokyo to be thoroughly inconvenient if you want to regularly go to Tokyo, especially at night

For anyone that has interest in going to an AV show, 80% of it is just talking. So long as it doesn't get packed you can basically go at the very end time, which is when the show actually starts. The last 20% was the older girl doing a strip, the main girl masturbating and peeing on stage, and then finally them posing naked for pictures. Wish I had brought a camera. But that part was only about 45 minutes. It was ok, but the majority of the guys at the show were some of the weirdest guys I'd seen in Japan. My friend was the only female there and the host and the girls seemed shocked a girl would come to the show. But they let us get pictures with them after the show
>>
>>1055921
Depends. Once you're comfortable with using the trains and navigating stations, there's not a lot that can go wrong. Pay attention to queues in convenience stores and everywhere else for that matter. Of course knowing some Japanese helps out a lot too.
>>
>>1055931
Where do you look these kinds of things up and sign up for them? Links in Japanese are okay. Do they ever recruit extra guys for videos at these things?

>>1055890
>>1055926

Tokyo University is considered the Harvard of Japan. It is a good university, but the name doesn't carry much weight outside of Japan. If you have the funds and you really just want to experience Japan or practice Japanese, etc. while studying Comp Sci, but other than that it's hard to justify the price when you can just study at home for cheaper.

Also, software engineers and programmers are overpaid and can make absurd money in the US. This is not so much the case in Japan. You will make a lower salary in Japan, probably significantly lower. Whereas you can make 90-100k easy in the US, think of more in the 50-70k range in Japan.

Why would they need a guy extra? The audience was basically nothing but guys, but seriously the most otaku of the otaku. Pic releated. The guy in the left corner sat there so he could listen to the girls on their pee breaks and I'm pretty sure he paid about 5万円 for the socks and panties the girl masturbated with and peed on on stage.

They were all more than willing to participate in any way they could. Some bought the girls beer, it was apparently a birthday situation for the male pornstar and somebody brought streamers and poppers. It was my first time going to such a show, but it seems that its mostly for the guys to learn more about the lives of the girls they like beating off too and then are treated with a small show at the end. They were all sitting attentively to the boring 2 hour interview part.

Anyway I found the flyer at the happening bar that I like to go to. They always have a bunch hanging up at the entrance so I always just take one. Often times they are just flyers for later events, but theres flyers for other bars, bondage lessons, etc. The one I grabbed was for the even at Poo Theater in Shinjuku. Despite the funny name I got the vibe from the place that most of the performances were just kind of artsy shows, but that the place does have other kinds of AV shows every so often. There were more flyers at the event but they were for other shows at a different venue and honestly once was enough for me since you can't participate.
>>
>>1055976
Personally I attended some eroge-related events and the audience was much more... well, normal.

How much were the events you went to? We paid 4000 yen which I thought was a little steep for what we got but not outrageous since it came with a drink. However on the other flyers at the event they were asking for 10,000+ for events offering 2+ girls

Inside Tokyo if you use the subway, the rule of thumb is you can get to pretty much every single station from any other station using 2 lines or less. Look at the map for all the lines that are at the station where you are and look at the map for all the lines for the station you want to go and then just trace back from there looking for intersections. If there are multiple routes stick to one company.
There are exceptions but when I explained it to my 15 year old brother like that on day one he never got lost once. It may not always be the cheapest or the fastest route but you'll get there. The subway is almost always much cheaper than JR with the lone exception being when you only use the Yamanote line

When you start throwing in the trains or you leave the area the subway serves it gets complicated really fast and not even Japanese people can do it without using their phones.

To use in AVs. They do sometimes recruit at the actress meet and greets at the video stores for like extras/stunt cocks/soupmen. And otaku of the otaku can be favorable because as you obviously know JAV is a lot about violation/degradation, so fat disgusting guys can be desirable over ikemen.

Btw, is that a white guy sitting in front of pantsu-head?

Not asking about Soap Lands but how common are these girls in Tokyo? Can you see them on the street or are they only in porn/prostitutes? I'm going to be moving to Tokyo in a month, I speak okay Japanese (at least enough to flirt and pick up) and I'm a tall handsome white guy (French). Do you think I can pull these gyaru girls?
>>
>>1056222
You'll see a handful of them around in Harajuku, Roppongi and Shinjuku. Other areas not so much. Most of the time I see them with douchebag wannabe gangsters, so I'm not too sure what your chances are like picking them up desu?

>>1056154
Yes and no. In general girls back home are hesitant to hook up for fear of being look down upon and labeled as a slut by their friends. So while their traveling they don't have this problem as no ones around. However, in general they are more cautious about meeting and being approached by strangers.

One time there was this chubby Russian girl that was asking this Japanese granny for directions. I stepped in and tried to help her using Google Maps (I wasn't trying to pick her up, I just know how it feels to be lost in foreign country)*. She wanted to go to some restaurant serving okonomiyaki that's apparently famous and listed in her travel guide. I was escorting her to the restaurant and we were walking past these dark dingey alleys, and she commented that this is getting dangerous. I told her flat out I was just following google maps and was trying to help her, and if she wants she can walk away. This apparently reassured her. When we got to the restaurant, she asked if I wanted to join her and maybe go for a drink afterwards? I declined as I wasn't really interested in her (she's about a 5.5/10), but I knew she was DTF.

So I guess what I'm saying is YMMV. While they have one roadblock down, there's another you have to deal with.
>>
>>1056230
>Yes and no
I see. I can totally get that when they are here their won't be anybody they know who will call them sluts. I just assumed that majority of them jealous of gaijin men going for Japanese woman. So I thought it might be easy target. Just in general the ones who come here are more adventurous I believe and are a more uglier than the ones back home. Just like in your story (5.5/10). Uglier ones are easier targets. I guess for just getting your dick wet it's okay.

Good for you actually helping her all the way to the restaurant and actually explaining the whole thing to her so she doesn't feel uncomfortable.

>You'll see a handful of them around in Harajuku, Roppongi and Shinjuku.

I never see gyaru in Shinjuku. Or really Roppongi much for that matter. You left out Shibuya, which is their traditional Mecca, and where you will also seem some still. Especially at the clubs. Go to Camelot or Atom and you're bound to see a few. Also the beaches, you will see them at the beaches. Go to Enoshima in the summer. Atami. I saw a few last summer in Atami. Sun Beach.

>Do you think I can pull these gyaru girls?

I'm a decent looking white guy living in Tokyo. I actually managed to hook up with one, but really, don't expect it to happen to you too. In my case I just think I got lucky and I also had the right kind of Japanese wingman.

Generally speaking, gyaru aren't at all interested in white guys. Their general denseness/lack of education/lack of English ability makes them more insular and not as open minded to be sure--but that's NOT the main reason. The main reason is that white guys are simply not "Gyaru-Oh" or male gyaru. Gyaru is a cliquey subculture and they stick to their own. Think of it this way, do you think a punk or goth girl would fuck some preppy model, not matter how "tall and handsome" he is? No. It's the same with gyaru. They just aren't interested in dudes who aren't about their thing, most of the time.

Your odds are certainly better than the average person though.

If I'm a black guy in japan, do I have a better chance of hooking up with a Gyaru-type chick
I mean, I'm still not completely familiar with how they feel about blacks in japan, but it seems like there are some social groups that think we're pretty alright
>>
>>1056508
There's four groups Japanese people put everyone in. At the top there's Japanese, then there's not Asian, then there's the Asians that are not as good as Japanese (Chinese and Korean), and at the bottom, all other Asian countries. It seems to bother a lot white guys that not only it's there a country where they aren't privileged but where they are thought of as equal to black.
There's already a small subset of girls that have any interest in foreigners, maybe a very attractive white guy has a slight advantage because he fits the stereotype, but for the most part you're on the same level as everyone else. My black friends usually do better than my white friends.
>>
>>1056508
>If I'm a black guy in japan, do I have a better
chance of hooking up with a Gyaru-type chick

No better or worse than a white guy. I get the feeling that your average gyaru doesn't view blacks any less favorably than a white guy, but generally speaking, again, they are not interested in foreigners. They are not interested in most Japanese guys either for that matter. They are interested in gyaru-oh or else macho Japanese guys with tans. As I said before, it's a subculture and subcultures stick together. Go back to the early to mid 2000s--an Emo girl isn't going to date a guy who isn't Emo.

There's a misconception among a decent amount of people that gyaru are "trying to be black." That isn't true.
>>
>>1056516
I know gyaru aren't trying to be black, that's a different group of japanese people whose "name" I forget
I mean, I've learned about some subcultures in japan and that gyaru is more of a counterculture against the whole prim and proper pale skinned japanese lady people expect them to be

I think

I just really like gyaru
>>
>>1056515
>It seems to bother a lot white guys that not only it's there a country where they aren't privileged but where they are thought of as equal to black.

This is sooo not true. As I just posted, I don't think a gyaru specifically view white above black really, just foreigners are foreigners-- but If you think the AVERAGE Japanese girl makes no distinction between white and black guys in terms of dating, you are delusional. They prefer white guys, full stop. If your black friends do better on average then that is clearly on their personalities being more enterprising and conducive to getting laid. All things being equal personality-wise, white will win out 9/10. Certainly I'm not saying there aren't j-girls who aren't specifically into black guys, of course there are. But 9/10 will not even touch black.

I'm not sure how I can express this objectively without sounding like a butthurt /pol/tard or something -- because I'm totally not that guy, but j-girls absolutely prefer white. This is just the truth.

My Japanese ex-gf once told me when were deciding where to hit up to party, that she didn't want to go to such and such a club because there were "too many black guys there". It kind of made me wince.

It doesn't help blacks that blacks have a largely poor reputation in Japan given the shady business practices of the Africans in Japan.

Look no further than the backlash over Ariana Miyamoto. For those of you who don't know, Ariana Miyamoto is a half-black half-Japanese beauty pageant winner who received significant blacklash from Japanese over winning a pageant representing Japan. The comments ranged from "look at her big ugly nose and lips" to "She's pretty but she doesn't represent Japan blah blah."

Now take Maria Ozawa, a famous AV idol. She's half white, half Japanese and she's an icon. Japanese guys have no problem with her and she's one of the most popular adult actresses ever.

White and black are not equal as foreigners to Japanese, dude.
>>
>>1056526
well darn
>>
>>1056526
This is a really long post with some far reaching examples for someone who isn't bothered.
>>
>>1056536
tl;dr

If you think black guys and white guys are on the same level to the average Japanese girl you are delusional.

The examples "are far reaching?" A personal experience talking to a Japanese girl and well reported societal response to two different mixed race Japanese, one being half black and one being half white?

You really think Japanese girls like black guys just as much as white, or moreover that the average Japanese views them the same? You're crazy.
>>
>>1056538
I didn't say that.
>>
>>1056526

Your idea of japanese mentality is too narrow-minded, specifically to the japanese people hang around with. Who, by the way, are racist, but that's ok.

First, Ariana Miyamoto didn't receive "significant backlash". She received the same amount of backlash she would have received from right wing assholes in any other country. When "people" criticize the english or french football teams for having too many blacks, they don't represent the view of the population, just their own silly opinions, which make for good news stories. Being loud in the media does not equate to being the majority.

Second, nobody knows who Maria Ozawa is. She's unknown to the general population. That's why you don't hear any "backlash" around her. She's not and icon of any sort, and certainly not as popular as you might think (Sora Aoi or Rio are examples of famous AV actresses). Maria Ozawa is way more famous on our internet than in Japan.

Blacks do not have a "poor reputation". The nigerian stouts in Tokyo do not represent an idea of blacks in Japan in any way. Most of Japan has never even heard of them. In fact, the vast majority of Japan has barely ever seen a black man in person. The only blacks they know are the ones that are on TV. Like Bobby Ologun. And these guys have a fantastically positive image. Take Mendy, the half black-japanese guy from that shitty boys band. Given the chance, pretty much every japanese girl under 25 would jump on his dick like a hungry shark on a fat surfer.

Basically, white and black are completely equal as foreigners in Japan. If somebody hates foreigners, they will hate both with the same passion (but still less than Koreans or Chinese). All it boils down to after that is esthetical taste. Some girls might like white hipsters, others might like black gangsta-looking guys. It has nothing to do with racism, just taste, sometimes taken to a dumb extreme. But generally, girls who want to date foreigners will date either without discrimination.
>>
Unless you're a toddler that only eats hamburgers, ice cream or buttered pasta there's no possible way anyone can claim Japanese food is bad. Out of all the trolls in that post I find that to be the most ridiculous. You don't even have to be a Japophile to enjoy it.

Lol earning 90k in Japan. Maybe if you were in finance or engineering or something useful
>>
>>1056548
In a general sense, blacks and whites are equal in Japan in that they are both just non-Korean or Chinese foreigners. Legally on paper they enjoy the same protections and rights, but you are lying to yourself or absolutely uninformed if you think Japanese don't have a more negative opinion of blacks or that they are not more marginalized or that it's just as acceptable for a Japanese girl to date a black guy as it is for a white guy--or that as many Japanese girls want to date black guys as white guys. It is not the case.

>Blacks do not have a "poor reputation". The nigerian stouts in Tokyo do not represent an idea of blacks in Japan in any way.

Absolute bollocks. This is a big problem for a lot of blacks. I recommend reading some of Dreux Richard's Japan Times articles on the struggles of the African communities in Japan. They're quite insightful.

Despite being fluent in Japanese and in the country for in some case a couple decades, Africans in Japan are still largely marginalized and on the periphery of society. White English teachers who know 0 Japanese have an easier go at it than these people.

>But generally, girls who want to date foreigners will date either without discrimination.

How can you be this delusional. Absolutely not true. Even if she herself didn't care personally, societal stigma, what her friends think, what her father thinks, etc. would keep her away from a black guy as opposed to white in most cases.
>>
>>1056552
>Black celebrity does not equal the everyday experience of blacks in Japan.

Yup. But that's not what we're talking about. We were talking about their image and how japanese girls view them. Thanks for your unnecessary input though.
>>

Question, preferably for any japanese folks here.

I'd like to visit Japan to visit some spots, highest on my list is the Kodokan institute, I was wondering is Martial Arts tourism a supported thing there? I've a lot of martial arts I would like to try, Kyokoshin, Kendo, Iaido, etc and I'd love to try them in their home country. (okay Kyokoshin is Korean-Japanese but still)

Would I get laughed and and BTFO for not just being a western dog but also trying to learn these arts in Japan?

Also out of interest because in every martial art I've done I've had to sit in Seiza is it often observed in Japan anymore or has it sort of faded in the day to day culture.

Thanks for your time, inb4 hurr durr martial arts go to /asp/
>>
>>1056584
Among that whole shitstorm argument seems like on both sides the core of what they were trying to argue was a bit different.

Black people are generally not treated poorly in Japan. No worse than whites. In this sense, foreigners are foreigners. They are certainly not resented by as many people as are Koreans or Chinese. For example, say you're in rural Japan, and white guy walks into your shop or a black guy walks into your shop. The shop owner is going to be the same level of nervous and apprehensive in either case. Dollars to doughnuts he's not going to be any more extra nervous of the black guy, really.

That said, I do think whites are held in higher esteem. This can't be denied. The same bad stereotypes about blacks are pervasive in Japan to some extent (not helped by the shady Africans unfortunately). Just look at their porn, I mean Christ. There is a prominent subgenre of Japanese porn involving Japanese women with black guys. Given that so much of Japanese porn is about violation and degradation, black guys and the stereotypes attached to them, feed into this theme. They're brutish animals with big dicks. They might as well be a tentacle monster. So a lot of Japanese guys get off watch women get "violated" by the big, black guys. There are no white guys in Japanese porn.

In terms of girls and dating, absolutely j girls will prefer white. Anyone who thinks this is not the case is kidding themselves.

>I see a lot of keks make this claim a lot, but what is the quality of girls these niggaz hook up with?

Just because whites are generally favored by Japanese girls, doesn't mean black guys can't or don't get laid in Japan with quality women. But to say that black guys do better than white guys generally is absurd. If that posters' black friends do better than his white friends than clearly they are more handsome, or confident or like clubbing more, or any combination thereof.

If theres any social stigma its going to be the same for a white American and a black American. The ones that care want them to marry Japanese, the ones that don't care just don't want their daughter dating a poor guy from a poor country.

I got my tickets off of Lawson tickets online, but I know pia and eplus are also major ticket vendors. Filter for the dates you'll be in Japan and you're good to go.

ALSO: Be aware that the tickets you purchase actually have a number on them indicating your place in line. As someone from America I didn't know they did this since we just line up super fucking early and pray we get front row spots. But they will call you in by number range (100-110, 1200-1210), so be aware of that and know how to count in Japanese if you don't already.
