what do i do in a new city?
will be going to montreal alone (i'm from Toronto), but have no clue what to do really.
do i just walk around, see the sights (biodome, botanical gardens, parks), restaurants and bars?

i'm awkward and shy. is there a good way to meet new people as a tourist? i'm pretty anxious about going alone to restaurants and bars (usually things you do with friends)

i haven't traveled alone before, and when i did travel it was only family trips. what do i need to know to make the most of my time?

I'm planning to do the same as you anon. I've heard that it's better to stay at a youth hostel with good reviews, since they provide events/pub crawls for patrons and it's an easy way to meet/talk with other people. Walking alone and seeing the sights seems kind of lame unless you already have an interest in that location (like if your a history buff who enjoys seeing landmarks of particular events)

>Walking alone and seeing the sights seems kind of lame
i think it sounds kind of lame too, it sounds better experiencing things with others.. but some people seem to like being alone and just experiencing the city

the hotel i'm going to has a floor for private rooms, and one floor for hostel type rooms. i'm in the private room floor. maybe i will be able to meet people in the elevator or the cafe they have

>i'm awkward and shy. is there a good way to meet new people as a tourist? i'm pretty anxious about going alone to restaurants and bars (usually things you do with friends)
It's not as weird as you think. Dine at the bar, and dine somewhere that has some michelin ranking, little niche tourist draw as being the best at something (ranked), or some new chef venture. Or dine at one of the better hotel restaurant bars. Singles will be there, as well as people to talk to about your plans so you'll get some "must see and do" advice from people. Worst that happens is your waiter/bartender is civil and polite and you have delicious food with some wine or beer suggestions. End of story. But no one looks funny at you for being alone when you're in town alone, duh.

Take a local concert one evening. Surely will meet some people who are surprised to see a tourist and pretty friendly.

Are people in Montreal friendly? Some say 'no' with the whole french vs english speaking thing. Be utterly polite and people return the same.
>>
>>1050619
thanks for the advice

there are some highly rated restaurants, but i don't usually go to expensive places in toronto either (because i lack friends and don't have too much money)
>michelin
there are no michelin restaurants in canada.. i have been looking at yelp reviews, some of the highest rated places are pretty expensive like $30-70 per person

>local concert
do you mean local bands? like some french band i've never heard of?
there are some popular bands playing next week, like Grimes, James Bay, Nate Ruess, but i'm not into them
i've also never been to a concert before, maybe it would be interesting to try it out though

i'm worried i'll go and i'll be alone by myself, look at some random buildings and then go home, and be alone the whole time. everyone at work who talks about traveling goes on about how they meet cool people and do fun things with others
>>

OP here, what can I do after 5pm?
i get to montreal tomorrow at 6pm. the notre dame basilica is closed, so is the biodome, botanical gardens and museum of fine art

and although i'll be in montreal for a week, i'll be working, so i won't be able to do anything until after 5pm.. am i limited to mainly restaurants and bars?

>tfw looking at nice restaurants
do people go to sit-down restaurants by themselves? i'm looking at kazu or au pied de cochon in montreal and they both have good reviews

>usually you go to a restaurant and talk with others while you wait for your food
>if you go by yourself, you'll just be sitting by yourself waiting.. forced to stare at your phone
>will look odd eating by yourself
>>
>>1050774
The issue depends on if you are costing your waiter tips by taking up a table for four people in peak hours. Other than being considerate to that, maybe dining earlier, dining at a bar, table for two but ordering heavily and with drinks...shouldn't matter to be alone
>>
>>1050774
I've done enough business travel over the years that I get used to eating out alone. You can usually listen in to others' conversations. Don't worry about looking odd. If you are really self-conscious, bring a note pad and prepare a review of the restaurant for yelp or something.

From he thumbnail this looks like gore (a severed arm and something). The actual picture looks like shit.
>>
>>1050774
Bring a magazine, newspaper or some of your work files to look over, or a book or something. I've done that dozens of times at restaurants, even some 'fine' ones, and no one ever gave a fuck. The only reason you think people will find it odd if you eat by yourself is because YOU think it's odd, because YOU are projecting your insecurities. Grow a pair and get some delicious food, and stop being a pathetic assburger your whole life, for fuck's sake.

You're in a new place, no one knows you, there's no loss if something goes awry. Pretend you're James Bond or something.

>>1050873

>>

What this guy said.

Imagine you are a business traveler. End of story. You are not going to hide in a hotel room with room service, if you are used to a standard of living that is to say food that a chef made and delivered at optimum peak to your table. Order a cocktail, order some wine, a nice salad/appetizer, get your juicy steak craving or something locally known to be done well, and it goes well if you picked a great place. The better the restaurant's chef, the less likely it's full of people who could look at you weird for being there for the same reason they are there. Sure you might feel weird at Chuck E Cheese or Melting Pot, where it's kids or romance on the menu, but if the chef is a hipster doing fusion food and looking for the next review, or it's a historical restaurant, or simply brand new, except they are actually happy to see a person who wants to dine well. Imagine you're a critic! How do they know you aren't? Take out a notepad, snap a picture or two, and act suspicious all you want. Maybe you're a blogger of high acclaim (check out BurgerBeast a local guy to me, who many turn to). I'm in the top 15% of tripadvisor reviewers, and I'm not even trying on that one.

Long story short. The NYT newspaper, working-in-the-laptop, busy exec on your phone, thing can hide you from what is sometimes awkward, but it's very rare. I'm thrilled to have a moment to plan the next day's walking tour and sequence my events, in a nicer restaurant while traveling. The only careful thing I advise is not to take a large table too long where you cut into the income of a staffer, rather eat earlier or later or sit at a bar, or a semi-empty place, and you can't go wrong...unless it's empty for a reason, haha. As you walk around, you will undoubtedly figure out what is popular and that's definitely where you should go (unless it's a chain off an interstate in the South and it aint cracker barrel!).
>>
>>1050892
Thanks, will try to visit some of the nice restaurants in the city

>Rue de st-catherine is nice. Walked down it yesterday. Literally just a bunch of stores.
Granted Montreal isn't Tokyo or even Paris or something, but I think you're so out of touch with reality you can't enjoy anything.
>>
>>1051685
It's true that I don't like a lot of things. Sometimes I think I should just pretend everything is good, to be more normie

But seriously, Rue de st-catherine are just a bunch of stores. There were a couple of parks with statues too.
>>
Hey i live in montreal try going for a walk near Square Victoria a friday night, youll meet interesting people
>>
>>1050510
Go to Parc Mount Royal, check out the view of Montreal from the top

Go to the Olympic Stadium and Museum.

Go see the Montreal Canadiens if you like hockey.

Go to McGill University, its pretty cool. If you aren't autistic go to Concordia University and talk to people, meet some cool guys or qt girls.

Go to Blvd St.Laurent with said cool guys or qt girls on a Friday or Saturday night. Lots of good clubs there. Check out Musique (Dress quite smart), UP, Club Rouge and for something more downbeat and fun Cafe Campus or Trashbar. All of these are on St.Laurent. Take the metro, green line to St.Laurent

Go to the vieux-port, walk around there. Go to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal to pray for repentance for above degeneracy.

Go eat some Lebanese fast food in Boustan.

Sure you can walk around and see the sights take a couple of pictures and go back to the hostel. That can be traveling if this is what you want to make out of it.

Especially, when you're stuck in a city, being surrounded by so much people it feels weird to be alone right?

I would advise to get the fuck out and let life take you wherever it must but you're on a business trip so you don't have that option.

A few things about Montreal then: this city is about its people. There's lots of interesting groups from punks to hippies to fags to everything in between. Like any other North American city I guess. But you have to know people to enjoy it. And to get to know people you have to talk to them.

What do you enjoy in life? Try to find some place related to your hobbys and talk to people there about it. Say you like metal music, find a show and talk to anybody about how awesome the band playing is. You like good beer go to a microbrewery, sit at the bar and talk to the barman if the place is empty or the people sitting next to you if not.

There's a bunch of shit like that to do in a city and that can be traveling for you. Remember that you're anonymous, whatever you'll try, how awkward you feel doesn't matter cause it's impermanent. In a week you'll be back to your shitty job and at least you would have tried something new.

Whatever I'm tired why did I write all that

tl;dr you decide what traveling is, you only have yourself to blame if it's boring af stop being a pussy and talk to someone do something

I am autistic and can't talk to people, especially strangers. How can I meet qt grills?
Is going to clubs alone possible?

There's a biermarket bar down the street from my hotel, but it seems like it's filled with people in groups. Haven't seen anyone in there by themselves

I will try out the other things you mentioned

I haven't been to a club on my own bro. I know how you feel, I don't really like to do touristic things on my own either. I don't mind chilling on my own though. I'd recommend going to Concordia EV building (ask someone where it is if you don't know) or H building. Its full of people. Both downtown. Ask one of the grills for a pen or for the time or somewhere nice to go. Just don't be autistic haha.

Shame I'm not in Montreal anymore or I would have chilled with you bro

Man I feel ya, I have been travelling for a while now. Sometimes I also feel like I am doing things wrong.

Oddly enough i fairly enjoy huge cities, but its the places where a solo traveller might feel the most lonely for certain.

The best bet are huge hostels, and just ask the people to go out drinking. Even without people skills that should be easily accomplished.

Anyway I am in asia right now, i was recently in Jakarta. There is no tourism and its off season, I didnt risk going to a hostel, since it would probably be too fucked up, hotels are cheap.

Just pick some sights, check a route and waste some time, stroll around to get a feeling for the city, then get a nice meal. Check trip advisor app for whats near right now.

What I do at night is to check the major night clubs and go there at a late hour.
>>
>>1052502
I never really get how to meet new people in an environment outside the hostel though.

Either the city people are minding their own business or tourists come in groups, I never feel like intruding.

How to make friends with locals guys?

The only time I meet them is on transit. thats pretty much 100% though.
>>
>>1052007
OP herr, didn't meet anyone. But tonight I did go to blvd. St-lauren

Everyone there is in groups, I walked by bars/restaurants and Noone is by themselves. They're inside talking and laughing. ..

I went to Schwartz by myself. The sandwich was not very good. Then walked to st. Viateurs, the bagels I bought were pretty good

Don't know if I want to spend another $6 for the metro to Victoria square like another post suggested

The bread was literally useless.

They shouldn't even be calling it a sandwich. Just meat with bread on the side. The smoked meat wasn't anything special either.

24 year old amerifag here. Went to Montreal in June this year. Here are my recommendations.

1. Brasserie Dieu du Ciel. A brewery in the city. They have a bar. FUCKING GO. Buy a Peche Mortel. Enjoy the best beer you've ever had. Rent a bixie bike for your drunken ride back.

2. Transportation. Walk/bixie/metro only. Enjoy the city and the sights (girls).

3. Ramado's chicken is dope as fuck. Go there on a Sunday, walk up to the park where the huge crowd of people (hippies, punks, tourists) and hanging out and smoking weed and eat your delicious rotisserie chicken.

4. There is a board game bar i went to that was a lot of fun and very inviting. Also a hukkah bar across the street worth checking out.

5. More than anything, do whatever you want. It's your vacation do as you please. These people will never see you again who cares if you look autistic for 30 seconds trying to talk with somebody. The people were very friendly and I only had one bad experience with people there for speaking literally 0 french.
>>
>>1052700
I went to romados and liked it a lot.

Im afraid to go to bars alone, never done it before. Dieu de ciel is highly rated too, but all the pictures ive seen are of people in groups sitting down...

it seems hard going to places by yourself. Like going to a hookah bar or boardgame bar alone doesnt sound like a good idea. Do I play the boardgames by myself

I have been walking and taking the metro everywhere. This morning I went to mont royal and the fine arts museum. Plan on going to Notre dame basilica and old montreal in an hour or so
>>
>>1052563
Nice, sounds like the perfect sandwich.
>>
>>1052704
>Im afraid to go to bars alone, never done it before.

Make this your first then. This is not a bar you go to in order to pick up chicks or be loud. It is there to try their magnificent beer. You can take a seat at the bar by yourself and if you don't feel like talking to a soul except for your order that is fine. Nothing bad will happen. Nobody cares about you. Why not push your boundaries in a place where you will never see these people again if the worst scenario in your head comes true? You will be a better person for going and challenging yourself.
>>
It's easy to go places by yourself, just pretend everyone else is an NPC.

OP you sound boring as fuck. why would anyone even want to talk to you? How has no one suggested hotel bars anyway. Just sit at the counter and strike up a conversation with anyone that goes to sit next to you. Offer to buy them a drink if they're worth talking to. The alcohol in you will make you more charismatic and the alcohol in them will make you less of a boring fuck
>>
>>1052723
Ok, im going to try, hopefully it's not full and I can get a seat
>>
>>1050726
Everything downtown is open late. The best area to hang around and check out is the Plateau, on St Laurent, St Denis, St Catherines, Place-de-arts, Mont Royal, ect.
You can hang out with some dirty crust punks too.
>>
>>1052772
So im at the bar, bar counter was full. Found a small 3 person table.. Feels lonely man
>>
>>1052786
OP here, well I feel old now. 2.5 beers in 1.5 hours and I was done. Threw up a little in the bathroom, took a cab back to the hotel. Used to handle my alcohol well

OP here, back in my lodgings and I decided to masturbate to some adults-only japanese lolita cartoons. Don't tell the authorities, ha ha. didn't want to stay at a hostel because I had my company's laptop with me. I've read things get stolen at hostels easily.

or would trying to spend the weekend at a hostel be a better experience?
