Yes. It's pretty great actually. Maybe not KSA itself, depending on your lifestyle. But the money you make, and you just go to UAE, Bahrain, or fly to Thailand for a few hundred bucks for your debauchery, the same way the Saudis do.
There is no such thing as a "Real Traveller" as travelling is a different experience for everybody and everybody gets something different out of it.
Having done package holidays, Villa rentals, city breaks and backpacking I can say that for me, nothing even comes close to the authenticity, the raw experience of backpacking, how can you really get a taste for a culture when you're surrounded by tour guides and 100+ German OAP's clad head to toe in Berghaus and North Face jackets being shows some pre-fabricated monument that features on the cover of... I had the "real traveler" discussion with a friend. She is a rich girl, who's been a lot of places and her mindset is like thisVV
>I can say that for me, nothing even comes close to the authenticity, the raw experience of backpacking, how can you really get a taste for a culture etc etc...
Now I will certainly agree that going it independently, exploring on your own, etc are all better than packaged tours and stuff, but the idea of being a "real traveler" is still just a snooty privileged clueless person mindset.... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1049340 You can get small private rooms for less than a bed in a hostel dorm, and luxurious lofts in expensive areas of the city, and anything in between. So it can be expensive, but it does not have to.
It can be particularly good if you are traveling with a group of people, as sharing the rent of a flat turns out as a pretty good deal, compared to hostels and mid-range hotels.
You can have some socialization with the hosts if they are open to it. Some of them will socialize a lot with you and show you around.... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
It's cheaper than a hotel, more expensive than a hostel. Can be better or worse than either one, depends on the room.
I lived in one for two weeks, it was the side room in this sweet old Israeli lady's house. It was breddy good, though I was always a little conscious of the fact that I was in someone's house, not a hotel
I'm off to Moldova soon. Going there because it's the least visited country in Europe for touristic purposes.
Has anybody else been to this benighted nation? As far as I can tell, it looks like one can drink yourself to death on wine, drink yourself to death on brandy or try to get arrested in Transnistria. I won't be there very long.
General travel advice and tips for enjoying myself in Moldova would be gratefully received. Going with a couple of friends and we will be based in the capital, Chisinau.
>>1049133 Once saw a post on /int/ where a Moldovan casually mentioned "the town rapist" as if it was nothing. I mention this to demonstrate to you Moldova is fucking harsh, it's like everything dangerous about Russia but twice as poor. There is literally 0 tourist infrastructure that all of Europe has now.
I'd probably recommend you learn a tiny bit of Russian. I don't entirely know the situation regarding language in Moldova but generally the farther east you go in Europe the lingua Franca... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

I don't entirely know the situation regarding language in Moldova but generally the farther east you go in Europe the lingua Franca becomes Russian not English Russian is indeed useful in Moldova, although the sole official language is Romanian, and the media are Romanian-only. In Chişinău I heard nearly as much Russian as Romanian spoken in the streets, and just about everyone seemed to be able to speak both (I speak... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Sup /trv/ I need some advice on a trip to the netherlands. We want to spend the entire new years eve there so it's gonna be just awesome because you know... it's the fucking netherlands (the somalia of europe). Can you help me finding a cheap flat? Can you give me any advice? I looked on every website I know and I didn't find shit. Do you know something i don't? Please help me /trv/, I'm kinda desperate.
I'm flying to Sweden in December to visit my girlfriend and her family for a month. I'm American and I've already gotten my passport, but there are quite a few things i'm concerned about. The first is that we're both only 19. The second is that I've never flown before. The third is that I'm going to be visiting for a whole month with probably only carry-on luggage. The fourth is that by the time i leave ill have only about $1200-$1300 and no credit cards.
What I'm mostly concerned about are some of... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1048913 I'm sorry, but what do you mean I'll be fine without a passport?
I don't really want to have too many bags to fuss around with and get past security with. My girlfriend's family has spare clothes i can borrow so i figure it'd be fine to pack some of my own clothes + other essential stuff and be fine throughout my stay. I might end up packing more though if it seems odd that ill be travelling for so long with so little.
>>1048915 No idea why he said that. But you have your passport, you should be all set. Euro border guards generally don't question visitors, unlike America. If they do, just tell them honestly your plans. You really should have nothing to worry about from them.
>>1048899 I have some us dollars leftover from other vacations but most of the websites I've been reading say that they are useless there. But I've heard that their black markets run on USD so it might be okay to tip with them?
So I've bought all the transportation related items for a 3 week trip around Europe next month by train, plane and bus and paid the deposit on my hostels, but I'm worried food might get really expensive in some areas and I want to keep it within a relatively small budget plus I care more about visiting museums and local destinations than focusing on each cities cuisine and spending an hour or so each time I go out to eat. That being said they don't have Soylent yet in the UK but they have a close brother in Huel, just wanted to know if anyone has used this sort... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Check out Ibis, generally good quality and not too expensive. Look for somewhere in the 14th, imo, if you don't mind not being in a constant tourist trap. The 14th is more residential, and one of the safest neighborhoods, though Paris is safe pretty much everywhere as far as violent crime goes.
Definitely check out the catacombs! I feel they are under-rated, but it is really something else. Honestly, I have been here for like 3 months already, and there are new amazing things I am seeing daily. The city is so big and full of history that it's hard to see it all.
I'll have three full days in Europe (late that Sunday night to early Thursday morning) soon to travel where I please, starting in Milan and ending anywhere within a few hour's train ride of Milan. Does anyone have route suggestions?
I love to explore food, so Lyon has always been high on my list and I'm thinking that will be the center point. Maybe something like fly to Barcelona from Milan, take a train to Lyon and then a train to Nice, where I will meet back with my company from Milan?
>>1048475 I've been before and the last time I only had two days to explore solo. I did two separate day trips. Took a train to Rome one day and a train to Zurich the next.
It would not be hard to cover my example route of flying to Barcelona Sunday night, getting to Lyon by Tuesday/Wednesday and then meeting up with my company Thursday morning in Nice. Especially since I intend to do most of my sleeping on the plane/train.
Similar question. I'm flying into madrid and have 96 hours there. Should I split my time between madrid and barcelona, or stay in madrid.
Madrid only will be convenient but i wont get a chance to come back to europe for a while I think. Is it worth it to deal with the hassle of being tired and traveling to another city given I will only be there for 4 days?
i have a plan to take an old van and convert it into a high tech camper van and travel around the us creating content for the internet. videos, blogs, vlogs, I even have a plan to make a documentary. the biggest issue i still keep running into. money. It won't cost that much to get going but I'm a poor OEF vet that is has to live with the inlays because the foundation i thought the army was helping me build crumbled under my feet as soon as i walked out of there gates. All i want to do is drive around the us (at first) and show everyone everything. I want to not only... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1047938 >OEF vet How about you go get a job as an over the road trucker? You can pull your weight and get paid paid very well at the same time. You get a ton of extra money your first year for being a vet.
hey /trv/ I am looking to find out the craziest things to do around the world. No matter how dangerous it may be like exploring the Odessa catacombs. I have already ran with the bulls, I traveled from Pakistan to Afghanistan via the Khyber pass. Ive been to rough areas of the world but want to keep going but for now I am out of crazy ideas.
Last December was when I went through the Khyber pass. I was told it was impossible to do as they have closed the border to anyone that isnt Pakistani or Afghani. It took 7 months of planning and with the help of friends that live in Islamabad they helped me get the proper documents to travel in the provinces but I had to learn some Pashtu and on the papers I put was teaching "english" it took a lot of bullshit to get everything moving. All the small details like reading the Koran so that I could pass off as a muslim convert and having that as my religion on my visas.... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
