It depends if you live in the Western Hemisphere, then Spanish. Africa and the Middle East, then French. Eastern hemisphere Spanish isn't spoken much outside of Spain, but French is behind English.

Maybe 20 minutes from Astoria via the N train on the 31st Street el. Get the Long Island railroad train at Penn,get off at Jamaica then take the airtrain to JFK. If you want to get to JFK from Astoria,take the N,get off at Queensboro Plaza,go to the opposite side for the 7 train to Flushing,get off at 61 Street-Woodside then get the LIRR train to Jamaica then Airtrain.

I have an apartment near Sagres. There was a surf school there so I assume they get waves. I went there and denied myself nothing and was spending less than €50 a day. If you cooked for yourself and kept away from alcohol I see no reason why you shouldnt be able to live there on €1000 a month.

They are called Yurts, they are a bit like tents but tend to be more permanent (they might only pack up and move twice a year).

what do i do in a new city?
will be going to montreal alone (i'm from Toronto), but have no clue what to do really.
do i just walk around, see the sights (biodome, botanical gardens, parks), restaurants and bars?

I'm planning to do the same as you anon. I've heard that it's better to stay at a youth hostel with good reviews, since they provide events/pub crawls for patrons and it's an easy way to meet/talk with other people. Walking alone and seeing the sights seems kind of lame unless you already have an interest in that location (like if your a history buff who enjoys seeing landmarks of particular events)

Next summer I want to go to Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. Anyone been to any of these countries? How safe did you feel? I was planning on travelling by bus from Egypt to Israel but after the plane going down in the Sinai peninsuila it has made me think I am going to start in Egypt, fly to Jordan, then go overland to Israel, then back to Jordan to fly to Lebanon. There are, unadvertised but public flights from Cairo direct to Tel Aviv, run by a subsidiary of Air Egypt. They really are secret, to the extent of not having their destination displayed on the screens at Cairo airport, thanks to Arab and Muslim stupidity, so you may have to find a good travel agent to sell you tickets, but it should be possible.
