Could be code for "I don't like the idea enough to feel like I could give 100% on it"

Or maybe you asked for something way complex, and he just needed something polite to tell you.

If it's immediately recognizable from anyone on /trash/ without having to look it up, you belong here anyway, so no big deal.
If it's not, then it's still no big deal.

Not him.
As for your original question, no it's not weird. People get into habits and then prefer to stay in their habit circles, you are used to Requests, cause they're no pressure things, while Commissions, you are expected to perform and it's a totally different mindset.

>>

I hope so... some of the shill threads on other boards have been pretty chill.
>>
>>4038280
Yeah, I guess my stuff's pretty recognizable. I dunno.

Also I never thought about it like that.
Being in a habit with performance issues and all.
Although I do believe part of it is I'm really just not comfortable taking money.
>>
>>4027396
I'm an artist that said this in the past. Then I started taking commissions and my customers were saying "wow, that's really cheap, you should charge more."
I guess I was uncomfortable with asking a lot of money for a picture. I mean, I wouldn't pay $75 - $100 for a lewd picture of cartoon characters. Fuck me, who has that kind of money?

Also, I'm not sure if other artists feel this way, but I tend to get bored with what I draw and go from doodling one thing to sketching another. Since commissions are usually big projects that require a lot of time and work, I get disparaged quickly and wish I hadn't taken on the request. That makes my work suffer and is a rip-off to the client, which makes me feel like shit further.

And don't get me started on fetishes.

>"You do commissions?"
>"Yep."
>"Cool. Can you draw a baby furry in a soiled diaper being cock-vored by my pony OC "

Maybe I'm a massive normalfag, and, I mean, I get that they're willing to pay for it, but it's shit that I'm quite frankly uncomfortable with drawing. Especially the whole diaper fetish. To each their own. I'm not judging those people, I just worked as an LNA at an old folks home in the past, so you'll forgive me if I gag at the thought.

I also stopped getting commission requests, so I sort of stopped saying that I take commissions. I suppose if one turns up, I might entertain it, but it depends.

No, you're fine honestly. That's why many artists have a "will not draw" section in their Commissions page(s) that only grows with time because they meet all the weirdos eventually.

That said, if you aren't getting commissions anymore, there's a number of reasons.
>Your prices are too high for most people (I doubt, but let's hear 'em or see a comm sheet)
>Your art is shit (let's see an example to decide, I do doubt overall)
>Generally, you serve a relatively small number of people and thus when they got what they wanted out of you, they basically just fucked off and might come back in time
That last one is most likely with many "smaller" artists who start dabbling in Commissions.
>>
>>4027396
I say this a lot, or I let people choose their prices depending on what they want. I normally give a general ballpark of what was paid for their desired tier though and it's their choice how high or low they pay.

1. Because I'm not very good, or at least I have terrible self esteem. If I charged somebody money for it i'd feel like shit for ripping them off.

2. If I like the concept they want to draw, I'm perfectly happy to draw it for free.

3. If I didn't like the concept, then I don't think I'd do a very good job on it. And then it certainly wouldn't want to charge money for something I think is subpar. And the added pressure of money being involved would only make it all the worse.

>Your prices are too high for most people (I doubt, but let's hear 'em or see a comm sheet)
I don't have a sheet, really. I like to hear the idea then give an estimate to see if they think it's reasonable. Like I said, they tend to say the price is pretty cheap.

>Your art is shit (let's see an example to decide, I do doubt overall)
I won't lie, like 95% of the shit I've drawn has been pony related. As luck would have it, my ex was a big fan of MLP since she was a little girl and got into the new show. We both already lurked different boards and she found /mlp/ and encouraged me to draw for it. So I got back into drawing and /mlp/ was really the only avenue I had. I drew a 20 page comic that skyrocketed my "fame" among that /mlp/ community and I only really still hang around there because I created a lot of characters for a certain thread that are basically half-breeds of human and horse. I'm best at drawing humans anyway.

>Generally, you serve a relatively small number of people and thus when they got what they wanted out of you, they basically just fucked off and might come back in time
Well, we know how many ponyfags there are out there.

I think the reason why I don't get commission requests anymore is because I took a long break when life took a shit on me and I sort of faded from the limelight. That and I stay pretty busy with work.
>>
>Try doing commissions
>Just end up feeling stressed because now I feel forced to finish a drawing

I've got limited money, so doing so may not be the best decision for me.

But if it comes down to it I may just blow a bunch of my money just to see it get done more often, despite the obvious downsides of doing such a thing.
>>
>>4085670

I assume some artists avoid drawing even tame fetishes because some people will misinterpret it as being a fetish the artist has themselves, even if "commission for HorseDix88" is clearly shown in the description.

That, or a feeling of being ill-suited for the job. If you can't relate to that fetish, you wouldn't understand the subtleties that make the fetish appealing to people, and the quality of the work might suffer.
>>
>>4086398
>If you can't relate to that fetish, you wouldn't understand the subtleties that make the fetish appealing to people, and the quality of the work might suffer

This is my hang up. I couldn't explain why I'd give my life for the sake of tits to an alien, and I know I'd never be able to capture a jean short fetish if I didn't carry it as well
>>
Anyone else want to do commissions but have no idea how to price anything? Figuring out how much you're worth is hard.
>>
>>4095738
That's a problem I had too. I found a price I like to work for, but any deviation from that and I don't know what to charge.

Charge whatever makes it worth your time to do. whatever you charge, someone out there will pay it. The main issue you might run into if is you aren't popular enough for those people to know about you.
>>
>>4095738
Sometimes you have to start by charging less if you're not that popular.

Be happy with that response.
Because you might end up with something that's totally off model from what the artist usually draws, if it's beyond the skill level.

It's super easy to bight off more than you can chew.
If you're not an artist, or let's say if you're not a self aware artist, then you won't really know that feel, but it's great that artists know their limits.
I once took a commission that turned out to be 5x more work than I anticipated and the end result suffered for it.

>>4086398

>I assume some artists avoid drawing even tame fetishes because some people will misinterpret it as being a fetish the artist has themselves.

I avoid drawing some fetishes just based on the fact that I don't want the more autistic people hanging around my page and sending me commission requests.
Also these crazies for some reason seem to have an endless amount of money, so when you start drawing stuff for them, you might find yourself drawing 50 pictures of the same subject.

You have to remember that that particular artist is still trying to learn to draw, so if its something overly complex or out of his element it would naturally push him away, he use to keep appearing in Help threads trying to git gud. He does have problems if you really look at his work, and he knows the problems are there.

What was it that was so complex?

Oh please link me a refund for the Pokemon or whatever though. I am much too lazy to want to look things up for myself. You can link an egg laying pic you like too, so I can get an idea of what you're going for.

You don't have to draw every single muscle to show a body
Learn to simplify
Less is more
>>
>>4123404

Love the muscle tone, looks fantastic. Wish more artists shaded some tone in there. Can't stand plain blobs or two color "shading"
>>
>>4125128

Not that anon, but fuck oversimplifying the body.
Simplifying easily makes everything look like a shapeless fat boring mass and absolutely everyone seems to be doing it nowadays.
Not to mention it inspires laziness in beginning artists and they don't bother to learn what the body really looks like.
They just jump straight into doing simple soft shapes, because they're fairly forgiving and call it a day.
Which is on par with shooting yourself in the leg artistically.

If anything, we need more artist showing some physique in their characters, like art did in the late 90s and early 00s.
>>
>>4125439

It also depends on how much body fat the character's supposed to have, so it's not just the musculature. You can have a Bruce Lee physique with absolutely no body fat and extremely well toned muscles, but that also makes a less curvaceous, feminine figure. Most people, even the most physically fit, have a balance of the two.

I can agree that it doesn't need to be simplified, but maybe the shading for the muscles could be made less dark, so the skin doesn't look as tightly wrapped (i.e. giving the figure a smoothness that body fat provides).
>>
>>4125128
OP here, I just love muscular girls, and thick thighs.

Plus people like my more toony stuff when I've been trying to move from that for a good while now. I just want to draw baras and the occasional furry chick. Kind of wish we had another art thread in /trash/ like last time. It was an alright thread.

nah, the "High chance of having a defective child" thing doesn't actually kick in until second or third generation inbreeding.

If you fuck your mom, sister, cousin, whatever and a kid comes from it, things are actually fine as long as the kid doesn't start inbreeding with one of the parents

Coincidental that yours killed it, they probably felt "they weren't good enough."
Does suck, though.
Still better than people like Trinity Fate who just don't even show most of their shit anymore because "Only their Patrons are paying, so why should everyone else get to see all this art?"
Cause he's stopped showing a TON of stuff on his DA/FA/Tumblr that sits in his Patreon pages getting circlejerked to no end.
>>
>>4163661
>Trinity Fate
That guy has been totally fucked by Patreon.
>Doesn't even announce commissions opening anymore outside Patreon

>Hasn't directly interacted with anyone on DA except commissions (if you get in) since January

>Acts like he NEEDS it and blames his comic for delays in his art, when you can clearly see that's not the case
Etc.

>Damn, I really need to get these damn commissions done. Get them done you fucker!
>Have them open in front of me all the damn time.
>Look at my notes, realize I sent a message to one of my commissioners about a month ago.
>Mfw.

Fuck.
Well at least these guys didn't pay beforehand.
Also:
>Can't get on with commissions at all.
>Try drawing something personal for a while, the fuck, I have no problems at all doing this.
>Get lines on paper without a hitch.

I think the problem stems from me stressing about the commissions and wanting to deliver a product, that's above and beyond what people are expecting.
I just can't give people a product I'm not totally happy with.
Guess it works though.
I've offered a discount in the past due to wait like this and instead the commissioners slapped a 30% tip on the price, because they were happy with the product and are now throwing more money at me.
It's just that making person wait for longer than 2-3 weeks, makes me feel like a total scumbag, since I should be able to produce this stuff under two or three days easily.
>>
>>4164022
Likewise, Ive left someone waiting 3 months, ive told them it would be a while because I took too many at once but I feel really bad for it, Im on the cusp of giving them it for free because ive strung them along so long. I can get my own drawings done in a few hours at times but with commissions I just cant do it, even if I like the request, I think Id rather draw for free to be honest.
