The feels would've been so one-sided they'd have lost their effectiveness. Think of Nick's whole childhood trauma: it works specifically because it's a dark spot in an otherwise bright world. If the whole world is already so dark, the darker parts don't stand out at all.
There's a reason why the concept was canned: that potential simply couldn't have been effectively expressed.
